i just bought a 7300LE to put in a customer's pc, and the fan runs at full speed all the time. i thought the driver was supposed to knock it down once windows booted but it doesn't. there's no way anyone would want to put up with this level of noise, so what can i do to dial it back?

If it's hardcoded in the BIOS to run @ 100% 2D/3D LP/Full 3D, and your card doesn't have the proper IC to allow fan control you're screwed.. Short of editing the BIOS in NiBiTor of course (voiding the warranty in the process). On a similar subject, you can check the fan settings programmed into the BIOS (READ ONLY no voided warranty) in NiBiTor..

Tools > Read BIOS select device, then Tools > Read BIOS > Read into NiBiTor, then click on the temps tab - fan settings will be on that page.

ps I *hate* nTune - personally I'd go for RivaTuner v2.0 rc16

I second RivaTuner. I use it with my 7800GTs to change the fan speed based on GPU temp (what a thought) as outlined here.

Some cards work with SpeedFan; I know that my ASUS 6600 works great.
