The New York Times has put together a little chart that demonstrates how overly complicated it is to navigate Facebook’s privacy settings. Here’s the first graph from the article.

Perhaps the NYT missed the lesson on "You get what you pay for".

I don't understand why all the bitching. Anyone who is concerned about privacy should just stop using Facebook the instant they see "personalized web-content" and "third-party advertising" options

Pfff. Still easier to read than this:

I like it! About time this is done in my opinion.

Much finer control over who or what can see ....the information that I WILLINGLY gave to an unknown entity.

Anyone making the assumption that their inappropriate pictures or immature comments were going to stay between them and someone they have never met, deserves to have that embarrassing information shared to the world. Maybe then the whole "personal responsibility" pendulum will swing back around!

Maybe I'm missing something here but I don't see what the problem is. Facebook gives you the options to fine-tune what people see on your profile. Yeah, it can get a tad tedious if you're 90-years-old but you basically go in, choose what you want to allow and then click the preview button at the top.

Is there some hole I don't know about that is causing all this commotion or are people just suddenly learning that when they install some stupid application and let it grab their profile data that it sucks out all their personal data?

None of you people have actually gone in and tried to set all those privacy settings, have you? How about you go do it before you shit in the thread, and then imagine how a regular person is supposed to figure this stuff out. You know, the same person who has 5 different "toolbars" installed over their browser...

Fixed.

1. The privacy settings aren't all in one place. The ad settings, in particular are on a completely separate branch of the tree. A sneaky way of ensuring FB gets more ad revenue until you find the settings.
2. Your privacy is also affected by what apps your friends install and what they choose to do with them. To my knowledge, this is unprecedented.
3. Most people aren't aware that each photo album they upload has its own privacy setting.

Are you looking at the same chart I am? Finer control? Bull, that kind of obfuscation for privacy settings was designed for one reason and, one reason only, to keep users from protecting themselves.

I do not have a facebook or any other 'social' website presence but, the contention that merely signing up for one gives any company the 'right' to distribute my personal information is crap.

How many users are under age, how many users have the knowledge to understand the risks, how many users get sucked into signing up just so they can stay in touch with their families? Sites like FaceBook aught to have huge warnings on EVERY page in 16 point fonts warning users that using this site is harmful to their health.

How about people that don't want ex's to stalk them or know where they live anymore? What about people that don't want their names, addresses, e-mail addresses, etc. sold to companies that spam them? What about people that don't want information that can possibly be used to steal their identity spread out all over the place where it can be abused? There are soo many things wrong with your assumptions here, I don't even know where to start.

And about the "much finer control", that is just a bunch of baloney. FB used to keep all your information private by default. Now you have to go in and "change" it to private. Part of the problem is that people joined back when FB was private and now their information is being sold "without" their express permission as FB changes their policies and makes that person's information public. This is a whole mess of lawsuits waiting to happen.

hey i have a solution..

dont use facebook

hey wow you have your privacy back. its a miracle

Yeah, that sounds pretty lame that apps are allowed to dig that deep; they should only go as far as the person that installed them and that's something that should definitely be fixed.

I love how everybody is complaining about privacy on facebook. They only have the information that you willingly give them. Don't post stupid comments and pictures and you won't have to worry about anybody else seeing them.

Pft.. easier then shit to navigate. I've already gone through all this stuff. What's the big fuss? Do people really get that confused over easy to find menus and options?

The chart that was produced as an outline is more than just a little misleading too. They make it sound like sharing some of this stuff is going to be the end of the world. It's a SOCIAL website where you share info with your friends. Why join and then get all fired up and offended that the exact thing you signed up for is happening?

I'll never understand why people flip out about websites tailoring ads to the people that are viewing the site. That hurts absolutely no one. It's the same as putting ads for Viagra in Sports Illustrated because they know it'll target their demographic.

Continue using facebook.. just take out all of the information in there.

I have listed: My name, my school, my email. That's it..

To the people who say stop using it, it has become a way to network in the work world and education world so you're foolish for saying to dump it.. you're going to miss out on the positive factors of using it (i.e. new friends, new job offers, etc).

Hmm. I guess you missed the part where they keep changing the agreement and even quitting doesn't remove your data.

Yeah, its honestly not that bad.
Current Fad = hate on Facebook privacy
Oh well, if that results in something good in the end, whatever.

Exactly... I still cant figure out what the problem is here. Hmmm.... lets not post personal info such as home address, etc. which I wouldnt do on any SOCIAL network anyways.

Google news is littered with OMG FACEBOOK PRIVACY articles. The bandwagon turned into a friggin TRAIN.

+1

Miracles really happen!

Current Fad = hate on Facebook privacy

Prior fad = Everyone rushes to get a FB account...

Next fad = Everyone rushes to delete their accounts...

IMO this is not really hating on FB´s privacy issues, shining a light on the facts like this diagram is. Its bringing an issue out in the open for discussion. An issue a lot of people havent even spend 2 minutes contemplating the potential consequences of.

I have been "forced" to open an account recently to keep in touch with some people that I otherwise will not be able to. I created a fake account on a neutral email and have disclosed nothing that can be related to my person. Call me paranoid, but in reality I just dont feel like giving companies access to my life, only [H] will get that ;)

Facebook is a bloated shitbox of what it used to be. I come close to deleting my account every time I try and do something and figure that the user interface was coded by 12 monkeys.

The totalitarian privacy controls are great for a techie but if they cared about privacy and new how to code, they could make some easy to use, global privacy option such as "friends only".

It is annoying having to deal with ad and game BS. I hardly log on there anymore. MySpace is stil fun though.

Spam about how many cows such and such a friend milked today on their Farmville whatever the fuck....
