Blah, blah, blah, more lip service, blah, blah, blah, making stuff up as we go along, blah, blah, blah, pulling stuff out of our ass, blah, blah, saying what you want to hear, blah, blah. -Facebook

“For so long, we had resisted having standards about whether something’s newsworthy because we did not consider ourselves a service that was predominantly for the distribution of news. And that was wrong!” Schrage said during a panel on the media’s role in the election. He added: “We have a responsibility here. I think we recognize that. This has been a learning for us.”

He has a point. Facebook is for entertainment, not news. But the internet was for education and research, not entertainment. Sometimes you just can't put the genie back in the bottle and you have to adjust.

People need to stop blaming Trump's win on "fake" news. Anyone with a semblance of intelligence can tell when a story is fake. The left-wing tech industry can't "build and App" that will make people think like them. They need to get over themselves and focus on what they do best: making advanced platforms for sharing cat videos and mining user data to sell to ad agencies.

And there is your problem. There are a lot of stupid people out there. Just remember how stupid the average person is and remind yourself that half of the people out there are dumber than that.

It's not so much stupidity as it is lack of interest in digging beyond the headline and confirmation bias. People have lives, and not all of them have the time to go vetting stories.

People have lives, and not all of them have the time to go vetting stories.

This, and the fact most of the old generations are use to journalist doing investigative journalism before reporting. Journalist use to get facts, verify the facts, check their sources credibility, and check the facts once more before reporting. Now we have the likes of Breitbart, Fox News, VICE, Huffington Post, Salon, etc. that is all owned by the same media conglomerates pushing their agendas.

When Fox News and Sean Hannity can brainwash people and give birth to the alt right (white supremacist nazi's) thinking Clinton wasn't cleared by a Republican house committee over Benghazi, or that Climate Change is a lie and a secret conspiracy to make secert Muslim Obama's clean energy company donors rich; or CNN can brainwash people into thinking Hillary won the debates/had big crowds in comparison to Sanders, and that DWS's DNC's corruption and crimes in rigging, suppressing, and stealing the nomination from Bernie Sanders is far less important than a possible (proven false) Russian hacker that released the details of the crimes and corruption. Then there is a major problem with our news outlets.

It's great however that Facebook and Google are weeding out the fake news BS, the only people complaining are those that trusted and got duped by the fake outlets. Now Facebook and Google need to get rid of misleading clickbait articles as well, and we as citizens need to demand more from the corporate media. Unfortunately, the later wont happen until the old generation is thinned, and the number of cable subscribers drops, thus removing brain dead viewers and the advertising revenue they generate. It would also help to put back into law the media fairness laws we had once before, that is until Reagan came to power (another one of his major fails as one of our worst presidents), and later Fox News suing for the right to lie on air as an "entertainment company" in order to suppress investigative reporters findings related to Monsanto.

If you use Facebook for news, you are a fucking idiot.

If the younger/future generations are not taught basic things about news veracity, things look bleak - blind leading the blind stuff. If Facebook wants everyone on earth on their world, they have to accept a forced responsibility for their dominant position in a newer, modern, information saturated society and weed out falsehoods in reported events (ALL TOPICS, not just elections). Google etc included.

I'm not saying its easy, but make an attempt. Either that, or ban all "news" content from your platform.

Also, how many people get their news from Comedy Central "news" shows. Or still look to Colbert and Stewart. Like it was said above, do people want to put in the time to research every little thing? Only 24 hours in a day no matter what.

And there is your problem. There are a lot of stupid people out there. Just remember how stupid the average person is and remind yourself that half of the people out there are dumber than that.
Except a lot of them are watching CNN, The Daily Show, and that british twat with the messed up teeth (forget his name), or reading Huffington Post, and assume that's real news since its mainstream.

They can't accept that they have been rejected by the American people, and so had a think tank come up with this "fake news" spiel in order to double-down on their propaganda and censorship of the right.

Unfortunately, by refusing to see fault in themselves and focusing on the same tired identity politics leftist propaganda campaigns, they will only further lose touch with the American people, which is why they've lost all branches of government for at least the next four years (probably 8). The fact is, they were focusing on things that most people simply don't care about. When weighing the issues of people losing their jobs or feeling safe from violence on the streets and Muslim extremist attacks and the like, they decide to push irrelevant things like transgender bathrooms. Even if people care... PRIORITIES, c'mon!

Fact is people saw that they are all talk and no action, and simply lack strength. For example, Obama made himself look so weak when he said "What is Trump going to do, wave a magic wand to get Carrier to stay in the US?", and then oops Trump succeeded where you have consistently failed and he's not even in office yet! Carrier had a reasonable argument in that they would save a projected $68 million by moving operations to Mexico, so Trump leveraged US power to make it in their interests to stay:

1) Their parent company has billions of dollars in US government contracts, and those contracts will NOT be renewed if Carrier moves operations. Further, you risk Trump successfully passing tariffs on your exports to the US, the largest single market in the world for air conditioners. (Vinegar)

2) Carrier will pay exactly ZERO dollars into the US economy if they move to Mexico, so a small tax break incentive can be the honey, as some taxes are better than no taxes. (Honey)

So he gave them both the stick for screwing America and a case of beer if they stay and help Make America Great Again, and voila. Hurt us, we hurt you. Help us, we help you. Simple effective negotiation tactics.

They are already failing.

Anyone who can make a slick looking website will get thousands of rubes believing every word they say, then insisting any attempt to disprove it is a "conspiracy."

We've reached the point where there are no common valid sources, and the only sources I trust are the ones I already agree with.

Well the honest problem though too is that even seeing isn't believing anymore.

CGI and photo-manipulation have already reached such levels that its really hard to tell whats real and what isn't. Remember when that Russian media or CNN on the Hillary campaign were busted pushing a crowd very tightly together and being many rows deep to make it seem like a big crowd, but then a picture from further away showed it was all empty and they had just lined everyone up to fit in the camera frame, lol!

And we only seem to catch the most careless photoshops, like the one missile that was shopped into four missile launches in Iran or the same thing done for Syria:

That's why I love what Jimmy Kimmel does, creating fake videos that go viral.

People just need to be skeptical of the media, and never accept anything at face value without verification. Unfortunately, you just have to be careful that your verification isn't being manipulated by people with an agenda too, like Facebook and Google.

Absolutely, this is not about stupidity. Confirmation bias is wound into the core of every human being. Right now there are hundreds of reasonably intelligent, relatively capable young men fighting for ISIS simply because someone told them they could be great in their own country. Someone was willing to tell them that their problems were someone else's fault, it's a slow process but people can be groomed to do just about anything if you're patient and make the right sounds for them.

The problem with "fake news" is who gets to determine what's real or fake, cause that's a problem. We could of course just let the fake news flow and let people determine what's real or fake.

the whole MSM was pretty fake this whole election so they'd get banned too. Lying POS's.

Why stop at the right leaning sites, you progressive cry baby? How about the New York Times that makes a narrative months in advance. Reporters are told to map stories to the narrative which is made by the editors. Mike Livavich emailed Clinton's campaign directors for permission on certain quotes. Jayson Blair was fired for pretty making up or plagiarizing all of his stories. http://www.ithenticate.com/plagiari...Struggles-with-Plagiarism-Remain#.WELatC196Uk
The Clinton Campaign also stated that Meagn Haberman is another from NYT times who loved to 'tee up' stories' http://www.dailywire.com/news/9834/wikileaks-outs-nyt-maggie-haberman-clinton-john-nolte
Then there are the emails between Podesta and Glen Thrush of Politico: http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-bl...liticos-thrush-doubles-down-on-podesta-emails
CNBC as well with John Harwood coordenating with Podesta: http://www.breitbart.com/big-journa...ohn-harwood-asked-podesta-interview-jeb-bush/
and finally how Donna Brazil of CNN gave Clinton the questions in advance: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/01/us/politics/donna-brazile-wikileaks-cnn.html?_r=0
Pretty much the entire mainstream was pushing for Clinton: http://dailycaller.com/2016/10/09/l...urnalists-are-cozy-with-the-clinton-campaign/

Thsi was not the only election where the left put out fake news stories to beat Republicans.
Like how the turd Dan Rathers and others from CBS made a fake story about George W. Bush: http://www.nbcnews.com/id/6055248/n...bush-documents-cant-be-verified/#.WELh_C196Uk

Perhaps we are too focused on the Presidential election. Fake stories can be harmful in other venues....

Like the made up rape case of 'Jackie' from the Rolling Stones: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...-rolling-stone-rape-allegation-story-to-begin
Don't let me even get started with Brian Williams of NBC news, we will be here all day...
Also from the "honest real news NBC", how the edited a Zimmerman tape to make him look racist: http://www.businessinsider.com/nbc-...1-call-to-make-him-sound-really-racist-2012-4
I am by no means a Zimmernman fan, but it was still BS what they did.
Katy Couric adds to the fake news of NBC as well with her 'Under the Gun' documentary:

So if Facebook REALLY wants to get rid of the Fake News, maybe they should start with CNN, NBC, CNBC, NYT, and other mainstream news agencies because I am pretty sure they have a bigger impact than a humorous Facebook meme

To add to this. If you travel from state to state with your radio on you can tell which party holds sway in each state. The level of media control the Democrats and Republicans exercise in the United States of America is properly scary.

Besides the fact that your post deserves reporting because it attacks a poster instead of commenting on the topic, your anger is severely misdirected because you didn't bother to read the entirety of his comment. Confirmation bias much?

Fake news is just another made up term for "news we don't like or agree with"

All news is someone's take or spin on something, it's up to the individual to choose to believe it or not based on using their damned brain.

Pussification of America..

They should never have started and get rid of the "News feed" then, huh?

Pimpleberg's point is he wants to suppress conservative news viewpoints that disagree with his own highly slanted, liberal views.

Case in point, I have another FB account with over 500+ FB friends. Miraculously, I only see other conservative posts and they seem to only see mine. My news feed is only conservative. If I post something in this account, it rarely, if ever shows up in my other account's news feed. Why? Facebook is deciding what people see and censoring stuff they do not like. That is why they switched from a time based feed to a mystery Facebook sort.

Try creating a separate account for yourself and see...

True today, but that wasn't always the case. Journalists weren't always branches of the two parties like today, and actually felt an obligation to dig and uncover information and report the facts.

But these days if its not to promote the party the MSM is aligned with, then its really "ratings news", where all that's important is that you're either scared or entertained enough to watch. About the only exception is when they turn part of the newscast into a commercial to sell something... sad.

People need to stop blaming Trump's win on "fake" news.

They really aren't. It's an effort to censor non-MSM media outlets to control messaging. The left always blames messaging for its electoral issues.

Except a lot of them are watching CNN, The Daily Show, and that british twat with the messed up teeth (forget his name), or reading Huffington Post, and assume that's real news since its mainstream.

To be fair, if you watched The Daily Show (when John Stewart was there, Trevor Noah is just a foreign, unfunny, boring, and full of neo-liberal bias), or John Oliver (that British twat). You'll notice they do far more investigative journalism and verify their facts beforehand (and mix it with their "comedy") than real so called journalist that went to journalism school from Faux News or the Clinton News Network. It's why people joke about going to Comedy Central for their news, and Faux News/CNN for their comedy. Even numerous fact checking websites rate these comedy channels as having more accurate reporting compared to the corporate news a majority of the time. Politifact for instance, rates Faux as the worst cable media outlet (as of 2015's data), with a 60% false or "pants on fire" news rating, and only 21% "True or mostly true" rating. MSNBC is rated at being false 44% of the time and accurate 33% in 2015. CNN made false statements 15% of the time, and was accurate 57% of the time. Meanwhile, The Daily Show was rated at 77% accuracy and was only false 6% of the time, and Last Week Tonight W/ John Oliver, rated at 89% accuracy, and only false 3% of the time.

You realize that politifact is a liberal left wing "fact checker", on par with getting your facts checked at hillaryclinton.org. That's the whole problem, as they have lied on numerous occasions, and are notorious for taking two identical statements and rating it true or pants on fire based only on whether a liberal or conservative said it. One of Politifacts most frequent "fact checkers" during this election cycle for example was a radical far left wing blogger before she joined their team, which stirred a lot of controversy, and its the Tampa Bay Times, a left-wing liberal news outlet that created Politifact.com in the first place.

And that's why people are afraid of having notoriously left-wing Democrat party supporters like Facebook and Google joining the "ministry of truth".

That's why there is so little trust in the media, when we had one of the debate hosts that is supposed to be impartial start crying at the election result when Trump won, completely distraught, or in the debate prior the leak that Hillary's campaign got all of the debate questions in advance of the debate, and in the debate before that being coached by the moderator using signals and leading questions accordingly in her favor.

Heck, I still remember laughing my ass off when CNN was tasked with pushing their narrative, but couldn't find a protester that could say anything coherent, so they put one of their own cameramen on camera to pretend to be a protester on camera and shill for Hillary (luckily the host realized how stupid it was that he would be recognized and ousted him right there as a stupid idea since it would have immediately made the rounds on all the cons. outlets):

You realize that politifact is a liberal left wing "fact checker", on par with getting your facts checked at hillaryclinton.org.

You did see where they rated the so called "liberal media" (a myth) with terrible trust worthiness ratings too, right? Just because they scored better than Fox, doesn't mean there's bias. They're also pretty transparent and list their sources/reasonings behind each individual rating.

Heck, I still remember laughing my ass off when CNN was tasked with pushing their narrative, but couldn't find a protester that could say anything coherent, so they put one of their own cameramen on camera to pretend to be a protester on camera and shill for Hillary (luckily the host realized how stupid it was that he would be recognized and ousted him right there as a stupid idea since it would have immediately made the rounds on all the cons. outlets):

Or perhaps the off the clock CNN worker was using his 1st amendment rights to protest in the streets on his off time? And the CNN host recognized him from a past job they did together and simply added in that personal element to the reporting while actually giving viewers all the facts for once? Got to look at things from both sides, not just one narrow-minded part either from the "left/right" of whichever side you lean towards. The truth is always somewhere in the middle, but identity politics wants to divide and distract people from the real issues.
