Facebook is requiring users to upload a clear photo of their face to make sure they aren't a bot. According to Facebook they will analyze the photo to make sure it's not fake and then immediately delete it after use. How they are verifying it isn't a fake isn't defined. However, you have their word they won't keep your photo. I'm so glad I don't use social media.

The new authentication scheme is the second in recent weeks that relies on photos. Earlier this month, Facebook asked users to upload nude photos to Facebook Messenger, as part of an effort to prevent revenge porn.

I will not be verifying my account "with a clear picture" of myself. There are already enough posted with family and friends!

I suggest everyone pick a headshot of Trump to submit for verification purposes:ROFLMAO:

Welcome to the new world order. Which country do you live in with cameras on every corner? Need to track your movement. The police and advertisers want to know...

i agree to certain degree. People using fake photos or anonymous account cause they don't want people to know who they are, those people should be deleted. Although a real account with real photos shouldn't have to use a clear photo of yourself for a profile picture.

What about the real people that use FB but don't want their face in a database somewhere where they have no idea who has access to it and no legal method to delete it? In a perfect world I would agree but they aren't many people left that trust Facebook (or any agency that has access to their data) not to use it for other purposes.

Oh hey! Another use for those family photos pre-installed in frames from the store.

not that I use FB..

Facebook Captcha also require Zuckerberg to prove that he is a human.

Wait you are worried someone has access to your photos when you already freely posted a bunch of them to the Facebook servers? Are you assuming that when you delete something on FB that they dont keep a copy of all the info? Thats a lot trust. My going assumption is anything you put on social media belongs to them not you thats why its free.

Maybe Im just a tinfoil hat wearing fool.

What, they assume everyone carries an image of themselves around on their computer? Or has a camera handy to take a picture of themselves? I guess I am left out of this. Not a bad thing to be left out of.

No. You read WAY out there beyond what I actually said. Why are you assuming everyone has already posted photos of themselves on FB? I have older relatives that are ONLY willing to use old photos of themselves from like the 50's-70's. This won't cut the mustard with Facebook's new policy and I've already had one relative let their account be locked because they weren't willing to submit a new picture when they did nothing wrong in the first place. Does the EULA state you can't use their services unless you are willing to submit a selfie from within the last year? What is wrong with being shy online and not wanting to be judged by how time has aged you?

Sorry was being very general in my observation was not considering any particular situation.

"We'll check it and then permanently delete it from our servers."
A detachable backup medium of course may keep a backup of your face. Or some other online backup service. Or whatever is not our server.

Or, they store enough metadata of your photo that it isn't your photo anymore, but gets permanently stored.

It makes no sense to me that they would not keep the data. Let's say their system improves over time, algorithms improve and such. If the uploaded data was gone, they would lose a huge data set to run the improved code against. That's why I think they keep data ABOUT your photo, or an altered version of the file that is not 100% the original upload.

They won't keep the photo, but I bet they'll keep the analysis and data relating to the photo for future use in recognising you.

The system, currently being piloted in Australia in partnership with the country’s eSafety Commissioner, allows users to upload nude photos preemptively directly to Facebook Messenger, so the company can create a digital fingerprint of sorts for the file to then prevent it from being uploaded maliciously in the future.

...

Facebook says it’s storing the file for only a brief amount of time, and that it’s still only a blurred out version of the file that only a small number of employees on the Community Operations team has access to.
Wha.... hahahah.... seriously, this was exactly what the founders wanted from facebook... to collect, then rate for "internal use", nudes of everyone...

"Oh, your boobs look a bit limp today... sorry, we're closing your account for security reasons"

But why? Why should you attach your real self to an online account?

and most people will prove stupid enough to oblige because, well, they think it's all about them really

This is fake news right?

I mean how can it check if it's not a random picture of a random person off the internet? Will it verify it against google image search and if it finds a match you're rejected?

You're all missing the point. This is all a long-term sociology experiment to see just how far people can be made to go in order to keep their farmvilles and their winky poop emojis.

QFT! Some people just want to see how far they can push this ludicrous experiment on the masses. You are hooked fish, are you going to fight for release or just give up and be reeled in.

I wonder when people come to their senses and snap out of social media.

Be interesting to see how many of the pics taken by the new Iphone cameras, and other devices using similar tech, lead to new hacked devices.

Won't happen, it so ingrained in people today that if it failed people would be so depressed you would see a huge spike in suicides because "I can't talk to anyone anymore". I stopped using facebook except for the occasional trolling people's status's but I rarely post anything and don't even have a picture of myself for my icon. (admittedly its a pick of 3 of my children sleeping in their car sets). I won't comply with taking a quality photo of myself for "security reasons". Frankly that's more of a security risk anymore, I don't trust FB or anyone with that type of thing. It bad enough I have to have a badge with my face on it for work.
