Facebook Buying Oculus VR For $2 Billion

The funny thing is... I was wondering if I should've kickstart it, and was wondering if I was regretting not kickstarting it. Now, not so much.

After skimming through the article (other link) I'm still not 100 percent sure if they are buying or still in the process.

One way of looking at it is Facebook made a $2B Kickstarter pledge. Which means its been "kickfaced"

Scary thing:

JOHN CARMACK IS NOW A FACEBOOK EMPLOYEE!

I'll be curious to see if he stays or bails or if they give him the boot.

FB buying this killed any interest I had in the project, which was actually quite a bit. :(

If it was between two evils-- Google or Facebook-- I'd rather have Google buy Oculus VR than Facebook.

Think about this: Oculus VR + Avatar-like interface + humanoid robots (from Google's own Boston Dynamics), and you have possibly the closest thing to Bruce Willis' movie, "Surrogates". Who wouldn't want that?

Atleast Microsoft didn't buy it and turn it into a console exclusive.

He says Facebook creeps him out... On Twitter.

I think you mean Robert Venditti's comic, "Surrogates"

Facebook is creepy. I have an account but I do not post any pictures of myself and purposely misspell my first and last name as well as give a false dob, etc.

And, I have all my friends and family added. They know who I am, but Facebook / Skynet doesn't.

And this is why I will never send my money to ANY project on kick-starter. Everyone who sent them money just got their asses took hard. That picture says it all, "Thanks for making us rich you dumb fuckers....HA!"

I was really looking forward to the final version of this product. Oh well, maybe sometime in the near future there will be someone who will step in and get a good unit out there.

Great. Another platform for Facebook to mine your data.

Just lost total interest in this product. There goes the new "VR" revival.

What VR revival? Only thing I ever saw was an extremely over hyped device that outside trade shows and theme parks was going to lose its novelty faster than the Wii.

Oh, look, they even brought them preview models. At least they are honest about the reasons for the sellout.

OFC...They knew as well as anyone that the "hype" surrounding VR would only last so long before it got abandoned like 3D again. They built the hype, Sold to the biggest sucker on the planet and are now all driving sweet ass rides.

That is all kinds of messed up.

That Sony thingy is looking tons better now though.

As for the Rift....well its done son its done, but honestly you guys didn't really expect it to take off did you? VR will NEVER be mainstream as long as half the population gets motion sick and the other half hates wearing heavy weights on their heads. No OR was a gimmicky quasi cool flash in the pan product for us techie nerds, but it was brilliantly manipulated to pull off a billion dollar heist on facebooks investors

Fuck everything right now

Fuck this, fuck that font, fuck that, and that too. Especially fuck that over there

The public will adopt the holo deck...but not something that has to be worn over the head. Facebooks shareholders just got PWNED>

Rest in peace future high end gaming VR... rest in peace...

Sold to the highest bidder......

How tragic.

Well, I'm certainly not buying one now!

He says Facebook creeps him out... On Twitter.

Oh right because Facebook , which knew of the data collecting the NSA was doing and stood by and did nothing about it while they freely scanned their database , is so much less creepy than Twitter which probably posses 1000th of the information per user that Facebook does due to the limited nature how Twitter functions.

Good point.

If I owned Minecraft .. the last place I would do business with is "Farmville" host Facebook. Facebook is only equaled in data collection by Google ..

so since they got bought for 2billion they should have plenty of money to refund all investors and backers.. its the right thing to do.

If they are at QuakeCon this year, I am going to boo the hell out of them.

Gotta say though, today has had its fair share of unexpected news. Disney buying out the Maker Network and now owning Polaris on Youtube (Yes - TotalBiscuit now works for Disney) and now Facebook purchasing Oculus VR... Some crazy times.

It is none the less ironic, in my opinion, to state such a thing on social media which partakes in data collection, regardless of the scale. That being said, I do not disagree with him - Facebook creeps me out too.

By the way, Notch posted an article on his site regarding the situation: Virtual Reality is going to change the world.

Nobody has asked the most important question,

How will this effect Porn on the Oculus?!

RIP Oculus. Hopefully the failure of this project doesn't kill attempts at good VR headsets for another decade.
