F.E.A.R.’s AI Is Still the Best in First-Person Shooters

Before FEAR, I remember the first time I was actively flanked by the AI in Half-Life 1 (or perhaps an expansion) when the marines were not merely flanking me but audibly communicating with each other where I was and what they were doing about it.

I don't remember the AI in FEAR, I thought they were just scripted heavily, got to check it out again this weekend. A game with AI that I liked is STALKER (yes, some parts of the AI in it appallingly bad...), it feels like the AI can change tactics on the fly. I remember the first days playing STALKER, I was covering a door and killing a team of AI, by the third dead AI, it went quiet, and then I got killed from by the back. The AI team went around, found another door to exit, and made their way to my behind while leaving one near the door where I was covering, possibly as a distract or the AI was stubborn, don't know but I was very impressed with what they did. Lots of cool moments with STALKER.

There was an article about this not too long ago...basically positing the same thing, that players don't want smart AI because it makes a game frustrating. It was a good read but I disagreed with several points the author made, primarily the notion that AI either had to be hyper-smart and boring or stupid and fun. There's definitely an ideal middle ground that the author didn't really address.

Article here:

Interesting article, but it seems weird that they would focus on players complaining about AI flanking them, but no mention of a boss character that can take shots to the head with no damage? That read more like a cop out to me, "well, we added better AI but players complained that the game was cheating"? that does not make sense to me, all though if you take the "snowflake syndrome" into account.. it makes perfect sense. I would rather have tough opponents that can die just a easily as me. Some games go the extra mile, enemies drop weapons when they get shot... thats a great effect, limping or slowed movement. Sometimes these little things help overcome or hide other shortcomings. Been playing GTA5 again... I love how the enemies react when they get shot, the AI seems simplistic but their reactions make you forget that. Plus its not a tactical shooter... its GTA

I am being actively flanked and dual flanked with changes in cover in Mass Effect Andromeda. I'm not saying its the best ever but it is far better than I am used to seeing.
AI in ME is pretty bad. Yes they will flank you, but if you flank them first they don't even react. You can walk up to them from behind and they'll do nothing, not even turn their attention at you.
Or if you're far away they don't even try to close on you, so you can pick them off one by one while they do nothing.

What difficulty are you playing on? I am getting a far different experience.

It's hit and miss with the AI in Andromeda. Sometimes I can walk up behind Kett soldiers and they'll turn and fight me. Sometimes, they will just take hits and not react. Kett can be picked off at long range with a sniper rifle if you are far away. The trick to this is being at the gun's absolute maximum range to hit (which is unrealistically short), but be just outside the distance for the Kett to react to you. The Remnant always turn to fight or come after me no matter what. Then again I've had less luck picking them off at a distance because they are often flying around monoliths and other structures which interfere with my line of sight.

Normal because everyone said it's extremely hard after the previews. Turns out it's much easier than ME3.
But I Don't think difficulty modifies AI behavior it modifies hit points I heard. Turning enemies into bullet sponge.

it would completely fail in more complex environments.
Has anyone here even set up a level with multiple targets/paths enemies take depending on player position? It's not as if all game designers just plop down an enemies and let AI do the rest. You can actually draw a few lines here and there, taking all of a few minutes, and their apparent AI level increases 10 fold.

AI in Wildlands always impresses me. Jumping in and out of windows after me, flanking me, and the likes is always great.

LMB in The Division fights like hell. Only had a few run ins with them and they are a beast to fight against.

FEAR still has the best AI in terms of smarts tho. many good times playing that in the past.

FEAR was one of the best games I've played as far as the AI goes.

It had some really cool things in multiplayer, like being able to give someone a Mohawk with the "depleted uranium rod" gun, lol.

They removed that ability in one of the patches, so the Steam version won't do that. That's another thing I hate, removing cool stuff in bug patches.

The AI in the OG Crysis was pretty good; the team action is pretty amazing sometimes.

At high difficulty the Monkey Monsters would eat your ass with one blow; it took forever to beat it on max difficulty.

Doom is pretty cool; I haven't played anything but Arcade mode in months, tho. :)

Ultra-Nightmare Arcade mode is just like my old Quake2 deathmatch games, with bots. :D

Remember, you don't get better by playing people worse than you...

Has EAX been stripped out of the digital distribution versions of this game?

I might want to buy it if it hasn't. I remember playing the demo for this back in the day... but never got around to buying the game.

You know why F.E.A.R. had the bests AI? In the mission where you had to escort Alice Wade you get ambushed by the enemy and she runs for cover! A hostage that actually runs for the damn hills and doesn't stand in the middle of the fire fight.

MP at 600ms is definitely possible, it's just far from playable.
Agreed it is possible but I like to not be VAC banned lol...
Some take great offence to it as it can have much advantages in some games.

the multiplayer part of FEAR(original one?) is awesome, havent played long time
