Can anyone recomend a brand/type of external hard drive enclosure? I have an ata/133 hard drive I'd like to use on as backup for my laptop. Should I be wary of kits that are too cheap?

Thanks.

I have 2 of the cheapest ones i could find... they're bytecc and usb 2.0... been using them for well over a year with no problems at all

those are the ones i have... they were on sale for about 25 bucks when i got them..

it seems that bytecc has a lot more to offer in the way of enclosures now, go to newegg and search for bytecc and you'll see a wide range of enclosures

dont get a speeze brand.. i got that one.. it doesnt work too well anymore. my freind also got the same one that i got, and it killed his 200gb wd, and he had to send it back to Wd... on the plus side, they upgraded him to a 250, lol

I have a Western Digital enclosure (bought it from somebody that just wanted only the drive itself). It works beautifully - never gets too hot, is fairly quiet, never crashes, etc. I couldn't be happier with it.

I don't think WD sells enclosures seperately though, which is a pity.

Funny you should post this now. I just found out that my old 3.5 enclosure was eating my HDs by making big errors (prolly because the 400gb drive was too big for it). I just ordered a new nexstar 2 w/ USB and Firewire from ZZF that supports up to 400gb drives that should be here tomorrow.

For the record, if you find an enclosure that says Metal Gear Box on the side, DON'T BUY IT.

There are quite a few 3.5" and 5.25" enclosers on ebay, for under $30 buy-it-now.

Be prepared to be raped on shipping prices... Isn't it funny? I can send a 5lb box of candy to someone in the united arab emerates for 11$, and $8.00 to japan.... from the united states using USPS. But to ship a 250 gram pcmcia PCMCIA card for $10.00 accross a few states is rape...

I had an old Bytecc (purchased about two years ago), which served me mostly well. I say mostly because you should be careful about how you handle your drive, since the Bytecc case I had offered very little in terms of shock absorption and stability. As a result, my 200gb WD caviar drive died on me about a year ago, which I'm mostly convinced is due to the minor shocks my HD endured when I traveled with it. Please note I'm pretty careful with my equipment, I always handle my bags and equipment gently. So if you go with a cheapo enclosure, just be careful about how you handle your HD.
