EVGA down to 1.2 years

Let's be honest, the only way we are realistically going to stop evga is if they stop offering their bribe. Paying people 100$ to fold for your team is something that we simply can't compete with. EVGA had decent folding before that offer, and ran occasional contests and giveaways, but you clearly see the immediate jump in PPD once they started offering their bribe of 100$ to anyone who could put out 1M points in a year for their team.

The best we can do for now is to try and ramp up and hold them off until EVGA stops their offer. The output for their team will drop off dramatically at that point.

Now, anyone know why I can't get the GPU client to work on my 5870? I have two in crossfire, disabled crossfire and have the latest drivers. I try to start up the GPU client and it says my driver or video card is not supported. P.S. What is a dummy plug, and how do I get one, folding on Win7 and I see mention that I need one for the second card to be able to fold.

Where exactly do you want recruitment posts linked to and what exactly do you want them to say?

And oh yeah, EVGA wants you guys OUT OF ITS WAY!

Linux A2 work units. You have to have the -bigadv flag set (even though I tried it and the client doesn't recognize the bigadv flag...), and your client must also have a passkey. They're specifically for 8-core systems; preferably 8 physical cores, but OC'ed i7s will do as well. They give about 25k points per WU; divvying that up it's still around 8-9000ppd, which is roughly what the Linux SMP client gets with normal work units. However, the special thing about these WUs is their bonuses, which can, if you're quick enough, double (or more) your ppd. To get these bonuses you must have completed at least 10 A2 work units, and you must complete at least 80% of the work units you receive on time.

I'll have no issues meeting any of the requirements that you mentioned on the aforementioned boxen, but it looks like I'm already pushing darn near 8k PPD on them anyways.

Here is a tutorial on how to get the -bigadv set up. Warning, it requires going into the EVGA forum.. Y'all wash your hands when you come out.

Good deal, A big thanks to both of you guys for providing me the appropriate linkage! I'm not worried about the EVGA Forums or site, as I'm pretty fond of EVGA hardware myself. My alligience as far as folding is concerned has always been with the [H] though, as far back as the Genome@Home project.

Ax

I think Ive read somewhere that 16 core boxes (your xeon's will excel!) will get a hella good jump from the bonuses because they go up the faster you finish them. I read that an i7 with a mild OC will just barely qualify for the bonus, but 16 core boxes will do VERY well at this. Let me see if I can find those...

o ya

KYLE POSTED IN MY THREAD!!!! IM LIKE FAMOUS NOW!!!!

sorry, dont know where that came from....

The way the points work on these -bigadv units is that if you complete one in 2.7 days, you get 50,000 points for the WU. Yes that is 50,000 (fifty thousand) for one singel WU. If over 2.7 days, then it is half that, but 25,000 is still a nice chink of change.
Here is the chart of one of our new folders who is using the -bigadv flag so you can see the effect.

I think I speak for all of us, Thank you SO much guys, I'm glad that we still have the heart of our community!

Great Assist Steve! I clicked on your "fixed" link and got the page from June at first, but I noticed your front page linkage afterwards. Thanks for the support that you and Kyle are giving the team!!!

SHould we make a new thread here and Sticky it for new/returning members to kind of help shoe them into max PPD? Maybe some one here can do a write up on the team and who we are, what we do, folding, etc, and we can put that in the front page news?

Even more than news mentions, a full front-page article would probably do a lot for the team. I'm sure someone around here (or several people) would be willing to contribute to something like that.

Thats kind of what I was refering to, A nice folding review I guess you could call it, a few page write up about us and everything we do and what not. Not that I'm not greatful for the front page pimpage, but this would be the meat we could provide with the taters, something we could write up and supply to Steve or Kyle, or whoever posts the reviews lol, and show that were willing to work for them giving us front page time

I would say we would need to write and then submit for feedback/approval, there are guides and how too's for those that want or need so part of it is already written, just needs to be linked appropriately within the text. a article is something that definitely falls on our shoulders imho.

i nominate you Vaulter98c

aye's? nays? hehe

if you do a good job maybe you will get a tamale or 2 /wink Digi

. i'd buy ya a beer, but i gotta see some ID and figure out a way around mailing it to ya, i dont need any revenuers coming around,

seriously, who would write it up?

It's up to Kyle to give the OK before we go ahead and actually do anything. If anyone wants to pitch the idea to him via PM or e-mail, go for it.

I'd try and cobble something up, but my largest screen right now is 10.2" on my netbook :(

I gues It depends on how bored I really am lol. I have shit for skills tho so if I were (IF big IFFF) to do it I'd need peer review like old men need viagra

Everywhere would be nice, but the best place would be the Video Card subforum. As for what it should say, basically just the same type of thing as the newsposts that Steve used to put up, such as the one that T4rd linked to.

Also, some F@H-related benchmarking in CPU and GPU reviews would be nice as well. We can help you work out a specific testing methodology if need be.

I don't believe that the GPU client has official support for the 5000 series yet. I suggest you look around the official F@H forums and see if you can find any info about that.

Done.

Not going to happen. Don't have the resources and quite frankly not enough people care.

I suggest YOU look and let me know.

I think he was directing that to someone else, If not, I'll back up and shut up now...

Anyways, thanks for all the help Kyle and co. We know you are all busy and we really do apreciate it, even if some of us may come off in a diff way (some of us have been stuck in the DC sub-forum so long that daylight is a new concept lol)

And about that write up, I've got a simple little outline up, I'll post my first page, if you guys like my writing style (read, NOT a writer by profession) I'll keep going, but if it's too "creepy internet man" than I'll drop it. Ive almost finished my first page in a 5 page series, obviously no pics or what not, just text, as my work computer has not internet and my netbook is too damn small to do all this research and extended typing on.

stay tuned, and thanks again to everyone for all the help!

KYLE POSTED IN MY THREAD!!!! IM LIKE FAMOUS NOW!!!!

oh yeah?

I've talked to Kyle on the phone before. :D
It was 7 or 8 years ago though and I don't remember what it was about and I'm sure that he doesn't either.

From a search of the Folding Forum (admittedly short search) 5000 series GPU's aren't officially supported yet, but at least one user is running it, though there's explanation of what he may have done out of the ordinary to get it going. It's being worked on, but no official word on it from what I can find. The link to the preview at rage3d is supposed to have a demo of the client running on a 5000 series card, but its not loading for me right now.

Damn you doozer! Always one up'ing me! First a nearly 3 million point lead once I had to take a break from our race, and now this, AHHH

Ive got a tab in IE that opens everytime I view my stats.... I will get you someday...It just may be man MANY days from now....

but someday...

EDIT - Crazyj, check your PM box, I wanna send you what I've got so far, you can tell me if I should even bother finishing

It's bloody annoying how I can't use a Linux client to fold, but I have no drivers for Linux to recognize my RAID, and it all goes pear-shaped because of that...

What kind of RAID setup / card are you using that Linux won't pick it up? I know CentOS can be a little finicky at times. What distos are you using and have you tried any others to see if it'll recognize your setup?

Not if you're planning on running more that 2-4 cores (Depending on if your using server or workstation). ;)

Big Thanks to crazyjeeper for looking over my intro and giving me the thumbs up, I'll spend the next few days writing up the rest of the review/summary/FAQ/whatever the hell you want to call it and see where I can go from there. I can't match the speed of the [H] reviews, I have a job, a house to fix, and taking up more time than anything, a fiance... ;)

I'll keep in touch guys, but keep the thread going with ideas and whatnot, what more can we do to get 33 back to 33 (uses big text to make it seem important)

No problemo. Just shoot me an email once you finish the final draft.

Lets see what kind of rally we can get going :D

Send it to me too, if you want I would be happy to help.

It's a software RAID using the Intel Matrix Storage manager (or whatever it's called). Basically it doesn't have drivers for Linux, so Ubuntu doesn't recognize it as a RAID, and installs to just 1 disk. This screws it up, so weird shit starts happening when I boot back into Windows. I'm trying to get VMWare player to fold using Notfred, but last time I downloaded a dodgy installer for VMWare and it gave me BSODs. This time I'm trying again, but it's taking forever...damn this slow internet...

Once I get it done I'll send it out to a few people, don't wanna screw anything up
shooting for this weekend, I can't even describe how busy I am

I haven't really looked at stats in a long time but after someone posted the number of active folders, the production definitely makes sense. Generally speaking, the team usually has at least 1000 active folders from what I remember. Believe it or not 40-50 members can put out a nice amount of PPD. 1000PPD is not difficult at all to achieve at this point and that would mean a difference of 40k-50k PPD. Sure, that doesn't really sound like a whole lot, but I would bet it wouldn't be difficult to have more than that.

A reason for the lack of active members can be attributed to several things. One reason is the current clients. About the only stable client out there is the uni-processor client and I've even had trouble with that one lately. The nVidia GPU client used to be rock solid but for a while I was having trouble with it and I have no experience with the ATI GPU client. The Windows SMP client has always been worthless. The Linux SMP client used to be rock solid until new cores were released and caused constant client hangs. For me, that was the last straw.

The Linux SMP client was the last straw for me. I was tired of having my machines only running about half the time because I wasn't around to babysit the machines when clients hung after finishing a work unit. I switched all of my CPU clients to WCG at that point and they have been running WCG without problems for about a year now. That was a loss of about 15k PPD. Earlier this year I had nothing but trouble with the nVidia client and still do. I'm not sure if the problem is the OS (Win7) or with the nVidia drivers. However, if the GPU client is running, I can't use my system at all. The GUI is completely and totally impossible to use at the GUI freezes for a split second every couple of seconds. I also can't watch any type of movies either as it causes the movies to freeze constantly as well. Since I usually have a movie or a TV show running when I go to sleep, I can't run the GPU client while I'm asleep either.

Problems like the ones I described above drove away a lot of people from F@H. Many of them went to WCG or a similar project like I did. As of now, I see no reason to go back to F@H anytime soon. The only chance I will is if a stable SMP client is released on Windows and Linux and has at least the same performance as I was used to getting before with the A2 core and if a usable nVidia client is released which doesn't interfere with my day to day tasks. If both of those happen, I might switch everything back over for another 20k points. As it is, my three Q6600s are running WCG and my 8800GT is doing nothing.

Another problem is with recruiting and keeping people active in the forum. For those that remember, we've almost always had the highest number of active folders when this forum is the busiest. The more people who are in here means more people who are more likely to keep folding and working through any problems they have. However, I don't see this as a possibility at the current time and much of that has to do with the current crappy clients. If Stanford finally gets some good clients released which are install it and forget it like they used to be, we'll find a larger number of people joining and staying. As it is now, I find it too frustrating to mess with.

Are you using the ICH7R chip? I noticed this off the Intel website if you are...might help

Good Luck...

Smoke you bring lots of good points to the table. Our bread and butter has always been the average folder, where as EVGA is the GPU folder (who wants to make a quick 100$). With the decline in CPU based clients and even the GPU clients going slightly crazy (had my first NV hang lastnight since I brought my main rig back up) I can see a lot of our "average joe" folders being pushed away.

I am curious about your 88 tho, it would be nice to get that back up and running and I'm REALLLYY curious about the problems you were having, that just doesnt add up to me, I've not heard of a system locking up from a GPU client. Hell, Ive run 4 on a P4 before and still been fine, on win7 with 1.5 gig ram!!

If its not to much, could you retry your 88 with new drivers/clients and let us know if it still locks you up? I'm sure plenty of people here wouldnt mind helping you

EDIT - Ax, love your closing quote in your sig

Nah, ICH10R...never mind, I've got notfred working now, though, again, because of my slow internet, and the need to download 4 A2 cores and 4 big SMP WUs...

The only thing I'm missing out on are the new, bigadv WUs. Unfortunate, but it's okay.

Thanks, it's looking like I am going to have to wait it out for the new GPU client to come out. Might not be a bad thing, hopefully much better performance and by that time my GPU's will be watercooled so noise and temps wont be an issue. Now, about that dummy plug nonsense ... anyone have a link to one?
