EVE Online, Amazingly Deep

If you right-click on the little white triangle on your overview title (just below the selected item box on the left side) you can get to overview settings. That will tell you what everything means, and you can customize it a bit more if you want. Most add the velocity column in so that they can see if someone is just sitting or is moving faster then they are. You can also set it to tell you all information about who you have selected (corp, shiptype, etc.) which is pretty helpful. Also recommended is saving several different overview profiles, so that you can switch back and forth easily.
Thats a good chunk of advice!

I must say I enjoyed playing Eve online and would still be doing it today if the game would just stop crashing my computer. CTD's and complete crashes during the most random times just made me give up. I have never had this problem for any game I have ever played. I've ran ASUS probe to record temps, I also have a fan controller that has temp guages so overheating was never a problem. Memory has been checked, i've scanned my harddrives, reformmatted, updated all of my drivers, disabled sound and still it crashed. Good luck to everyone else that can enjoy this game.

I'd also point out that you should all try out each race to find which you like best. From my experience out of all the races the amarr was the best race to choose for my taste. They use energy weapons that basically insta pop any NPC ship. Amarr systems are not as heavily traveled unlike the Gallente and Caldari systems (lag ftw.) Caldari are heavily relient on missiles. My first character was a caldari and I trained his missile skills very high but the damage of the Amarr turrets, even without a lot of the skills, seem to have more damage then Caladari missiles.

Thats the great thing about the races, each has a different set of skills they excell in.

Amarr are Armor tankers and excell in Energy weapons.
They can be some of the most powerful ships in the game. But, you need to get up close and personal to deal that damage. Blasters are high damage but short range. This is something I don't like.

The Caldari (which is the race I picked) can have the most powerful shields in the game. Missiles and Rail guns give them the needed Range to deal damage from long distances. I like this cause it gives me a chance to get into a fight and already deal lots of damage before the target even gets in range to fight back.

Example: The Caldari Navy Raven, is one of the most powerful ships in the game. If you watched the EVE turny the other weekend, you will have noticed that almost all the top tier teams fielded a CNR.

Every race has it's own shine to it.

I should've continued but I was in a hurry. :D What I do is hit the select all button which adds every single possibly object to your overview. I then remove planets, moons, and belts and all asteroids and save that as "standard". This makes sure I don't miss anything around me except stuff that you usually don't need in a pinch. Its almost never too cluttered (then again I play at 1680x1050) and if there are certain objects all around that are everywhere and filling up the overview (collidable objects/tons of drones), you can always right-click just that object to remove it from your overview to clean it up just while you are there. When you reload your standard it all resets back to the way it was. I then use the same template for each mining ore type. So when I warp to a belt, I see everything except the above and only the asteroids I'm looking to mine. Or I use the above template and remove only alliance/gang members which leaves only the enemy or neutrals in my overview when its PVP time. That saves on accidental targeting. :D Play with it to get it how you want, nothing wrong with 20 different profiles. :)

WAR!
My corp is now at war.
Yesterday we received the Eve-Mail telling us that Inspire Ltd. has declared war on Sammael’s Legion.
Most of us were shocked, we are a rather peaceful corp and don’t get involved in much PVP. I started to check out info on our new Enemy. Inspire Ltd. Has…. Get this… 1 member!
That’s right the CEO created a corp yesterday in a system near us and the first thing she decided to do is start a war. 3 of us went out with Cruisers to her home system to check it. She wasn’t online!
She has her HQ in a .5 system station that has no active guests at the time we were there. There are only about 12 Corps in that station and they are only Offices not HQ’s. She is the only HQ corp in the station.

But back to the funny part, she is the only member of her corp and she is now at war with us. The 24 hour buffer is up tonight and war can break out with out Concord getting involved. Unless she gets about 40 members today she is going to find her self badly Ganked! There are 52 members of my corp and about 20 of them are always active. Tonight there should be about 12 of us going to go pay Inspire Ltd. A visit.

Now we are not ignorant to the fact she is most likely a pirate, but her character is only 4 months old, so I am sure she can’t be super powerful. Either way this should be fun, can’t wait for her to come out to do some mining and see 12 ships (Frigates, Cruisers, BC, BS) sitting at her front door.

I’ll let you guys know who it turns out.

Wierd... kick some ass :p

By the way, I'm finding the skill system in this game to be amazing. Lately, I've felt like just blasting my way through some FPS's that I have, and haven't really been on Eve as much as usual. The great thing about Eve is that I haven't really missed out on too much character progression while I was away, because I've had a 15-day skill training all this time.

In World of Warcraft, I always felt the need to play as long as my computer was turned on. It was a terrible feeling, and I always felt like I'd be that much closer to 60 had I only played the previous night, and so on. With Eve, I don't feel bad for taking a break to do other things (or play other games).

We had one guy declare war on us in our ice mining system. It was just him, his alt, and one person we'd never seen before. He declared war to attack rookies and industrials.

He'd sit AFK in the station or cloaked somewhere in the system just to tie up our resources.

If this is all this person wants to do to us, they are in big trouble.
My corp does a lot of mining but we never go mining unarmed and now that we are at war the escort will be trippled.

All I know is she had better have a good ship to fight this war in.
Cause my corp has several and in a week I will also have a BS also.

Great thread - sounds interesting . Can anyone send me the link to the trial?

Any of you Eve regulars out there have a problem with lag?

According to some posts on the Eve forums, there was to be this big 0.0 space battle between warring corps and the lag was beyond rediculous. I have never had a problem with lag, but then again, I have never had 400+ ships on my screen at once. :D

I gave this game a try and find it interesting but a bit slow paced. i would like to join a decent pvp focused corp. can anyone recommend one?

Steel, just check out the Eve Forums large corps who are in wars always need more cannon fodder. :p
But seriously, if you like PVP, find a Hunter or Pirate corp, there are many out there.

About the War!
At 19:00 hours eve time yesterday the war started.
One of my Corp members just bought a HAC and was waiting for her.
She came out, he blew her up in hmmmm about 20 seconds and warned her if she ever showed her face again anywhere near Sammael's Legion she would get it even worse!

Inspire Ltd. retracted the war at 20:15 Eve time. :D
She than logged off and has been in hiding since.
We found she has 3 giant cans in the same system that we do our major amount of mining. Lets just say she will never be able to use them again. :D

Well I downloaded the game last night. When I get a chance I am going sign up and start my trial. I won’t have much time to play but I want to at least keep my guy training. Do you guys think I will have a hard time as a new player when it comes to making enough money mining to at least keep my guy in training?

Shouldn't be much of a problem, just do a few missions for a local agent.
Even with a bad agent 1 or 2 quick missions should get you enough for any skillbook you need in the beginning.

I just recently quit Eve (two months ago). Been playing on and off for two years with Army service in between.

I really did enjoy it, but for some reason I found myself logging in less and less towards the end. I only hope a normal MMO (land based :D) brings the complexity and depth of Eve to the table. Maybe Vanguard will, it's apparently got alot of depth to it and not simplified for 14 year olds like WoW.

I have super tanked my Cruiser!

I have been trying different ways to make my Caracal more powerful. After loosing 2 I really didn’t want to lose another. So I started to fit and refit different shield boosters and extenders and hardeners. I tried about 8 mil worth of new gear on this thing, when I found the best outcome.

Since I am Caldari and Caldari ships are mostly Shield intensive, I knew I had to get my shields higher. The base shields on my Cruiser is 1275 hit points, that is not very much at all, the best I was able to get before last night was 3055 hit points. So I fitted 4 Large F 59 Shield Extenders on my Caracal, after upgrading the power grid by about 30%. And thanks to my skills I get boni in Shields.

The End Result:
9600 Shield Hit points

For Comparison: Caldari Raven Battleship has a starting Shield HP of 6000.

This comes at a cost of not being able to repair the shields with a booster of any kind. Also the shield recharge rate will take 16 mins from empty. But with 9600 HP of shields it wont matter if I can’t repair them, cause I have so damn much of them!

Example:
The average light missile can do about 75 HP of damage and if they are firing 4 at a time.

75 x 4 = 300

They would have too shoot me 32 times to drop my shields

If I am being hit for 400 hp of damage at once it would take 24 shots
If I am being hit for 500 hp of damage at once it would take 19.2 shots

So you get the picture, and since most people can’t do 500 hp of damage at once the shields are almost unbreakable. Plus if you add on resistances that I have, it makes the weapons even less effective.

I had a fellow corp mate test the shields for me and he used a cap energy drainer, webifier and 3 missiles at a time and 2 blasters, he ran out of ammo and energy before my shields were at 50% this took 10 mins to do!

I felt so smart the day I found out how to determine range on my missiles.

Flight Time x Velocity = Range

Word of advice on the tanking, resists FTW! Higher resists are always better then just more of shield or armor. Its better to take less damage in the first place since you run your booster or repairer far less often, thereby taking far less capacitor useage. The only reason I would add extenders or plates is when doing PVE/ratting for enemies much tougher then you where you need to absorb a ton of damage long enough to beat them. Then you just boost your main two resists that the NPC's attack with, and slap extenders/plates in the last slots if you want.

I agree completly.
It was more of a test to see how much I could give my ship. I changed it around and give my self 90% EM resists and it performed far bette with many times less shields.

I heard there are 30 day one time use keys if you look around on eve-online.com, is that true?

Can someone send me a 14 day trial? I'm very interested in this game.

Email in profile.

It wont let me email you from the profile. PM me with the email addy and I will get you a free trial :D

Shoot me (or one of the others who play) a PM with your email adress if you want a trial key mate

i had a 14 day trial and just made a dummy account to play around in the game. I enjoyed it, the thing i liked most was you could still advance in skill even if you didnt want to play. I didnt upgrade to a full account because i'm on a summer internship and i dont have internet where i live (im going insane) so when i get back home i'm going to join for real.

I started about 3 hours ago, and saved up 50,000 ISK and bought myself a condor.

What are the steps for becoming successful??

Also can i get an invite to the [H] corp?

i just logged on to see if my trial was dust... it says "You have 0 days left on your trial period" so i hit close and then it logs in and i load up my character and start playing...

playing right now as a matter of fact

Success in Eve is not an easy thing to define. You could define success as a multibillionaire tycoon that's never fired a weapon at anything. It could be a successful trader, a pirate, a mission runner, mercenary, miner, anything. There are many ways to be a fighter, too.

A few tips, though:
  1. Always have a skill in training.
  2. If you can train learning skills first - they'll save you a lot of time with other skills.
  3. Stay out of low security space (below 0.5)
  4. Don't steal ore or shoot people cos they can shoot back or CONCORD will destroy you (if you attack)
  5. Eve ECM is a valuable tool to help plan skill training although it will not log in for you
  6. Shop around! Selling your mods and ships and ore and minerals is a skill in and of itself: it takes practice to find the buyer paying the highest price.

Look through the item database for a general idea of what's up.

You just need to fly to one of our offices and apply. Our HQ is in Oursulaert, but we are currently relocating to Juddi. We do have another 6/7 offices, but will be closing all of those this month. I would suggest just flying to Juddi as that is where most of the members are now (don't worry it's high sec just below Rens). We have had a number of new players join in the past couple of weeks.

I'll consider that once I create my new character. I really dont like the whole waiting 10 hours to delete a character thing

I am learning what it is to feel loss this week.
My corp is at war with another corp and we had a rather bloody battle yesterday.
At first I had good luck yesterday and managed to kill 2 ships, but they came in force to our HQ and ganked me. 5 vs 1, I knew I was gonna lose my ship, but I still managed to kill 1 more before they blew me up. So I killed 3 ships before they cost me 50 mil in loss. About 4 other members lost their ships from my corp as well.

Not a good start to this war, but we will still win it. If I was able to take out 3 ships by my self and it took 5 ships to kill me, I know I can do it again. Also I am one of the weaker members of my Corp, the big guns have yet to show up.

Wish me luck!
