ESXI 6.0 u 2 and Linux - adding a virtual hard drive

So this used to work fine for me on 5.5 and earlier - add the hard drive in vsphere, rescan the scsi bus, sudo vgextend, whatever..

In Ubuntu 16.04 x64, the rescan just isn't seeing anything.

Is there something basic that I'm missing or has this somehow broken?

Absolutely the right answer to the second part of the process.

The problem is that the VM never sees the new disk without reboot.

... apparently you have to use the vmware paravirtualized driver. Carry on. Nothing to see here.
