eSports is becoming a real thing as it is drawing more and more eyes to it and creating advertising opportunities to a demographic that many companies have a hard time reaching. That money is now leeching down to the high school and collegiate level. And that is compelling a lot of schools to get involved. I know there has been talk of this in North Texas for a year or so now, but we have seen none of it come to fruition in terms of actual structure and infrastructure being applied. Thanks to Brian W. for the linkage!

Now, Mullenioux and the company he co-founded, HSEL—the High School Esports League—are at the forefront of a growing movement to bring esports teams into the high school sports arena. HSEL alone has 850 partnered schools and boasts more than 16,000 users. It's added 1,000 players a week for the past four weeks. And this fall, another company, PlayVS, will launch varsity-level esports leagues in at least 18 states through a partnership with the National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS).

If you want to have competitive game playing, then fine, call it that. Please stop trying to call it a "sport". That just makes me vomit in my mouth a little.

Same with motorsports, right?

Or watersports. Google that and look at some images. Turn the safe search stuff off. :)

eSports... It's like chess. If they can call that a sport, then I'm fine with eSports. It's nothing to do with physical sports, though. Not by a long shot.

Sports to me is more of a competitive physical thing. Competitive gaming misses that physical part. It's just a small thing, though. So, I really don't care either way. If that's what they want to call it, fine...

It's a little over the top to make it a college or HS "sport", though. It reminds me of the Mathletes or Knowledge Bowl or chess club style competitions. Cool if you're into it, but it's not a major thing for the school.

Do I wish they had this when I was in high school? FUCK YEA! I'd be playing games at school all the time. I'd be the fucking team captain. I just wouldn't consider it a sport.

Actually work has begun on eAcademics. For example, let's say eMath. In eMath, you use VR to control an AI entity to solve the equations for you. A+!

"Hey Mom, I got offered a scholarship for my eMath skills!"

-"But you're terrible at math..."

"It's eMath Mom, e-Math!"

There already scholarships for playing music. They play a game. They use a keyboard, concerts will probably upgrade to a piano but they could use a keyboard.

When I was a student I went to orchestra performances and enjoyed them, but I would have watched a Dota 2 tournament as well.

Oh there is all kinds of competitive things going on in schools, choir, band, orchestra, and so on. None of them call it a sport. They are all called competitive activities (more correctly they are called competitions), because that is what they are. Playing a game is not a sport, it is a competitive activity.

Are you implying nerds can't grow big bodies? Fat has been rehabilitated

Games are still being played in the physical world last time I checked. But yes, Jaedong isn't known for his amazing bikini shots

Something tells me these Mathletes of yours aren't exactly the people I've met at Quake tournaments. Been to chess tournaments and football matches. Yeah, I prefer gaming events.

They can be big, body builders if they want. But, the games played are not physical endurance or strength based.

I wonder if the first people to play baseball ect were met with the same scrutiny about playing games competitively...

Doing something for sport is competing for the sake of amusement and individual progress and no other purpose. People complaining its not "physical" enough to be a sport need to re-evaluate the meaning of the word. I dare you to move you're fingers as fast as these kids do playing these games. I know I can't.

What really defines a sport is the competitive factor... competing against anyone or anything almost always requires physical exertion. Playing an instrument is just playing until you try to be better than someone else and push yourself to greater limits.

The way America views "Sports" in general is an extreme perversion of the word and has totally changed the last 50 years with the commercialization of these so called "Sports".

Basically, In America, if its not monetized, its not a sport. Sports sell, and if can't sell, its not a sport.

In my view, take all the monetizing away and if people still do it for the sake of doing it and having fun, then and only then can you consider it a Sport. If you get paid to do it, its a job.

I always find it funny that the biggest die hard "sports" fans are always the people who are to fat-lazy-stupid-pansy-meek to do it themselves and could never fathom what it takes to be the best at what you do simply for the sake of being the best and achieving individual progress regardless of how small or insignificant it may seem.

Actually participating in the activity is were the true value lies. Participating in fun activities with others gains you valuable individual knowledge.

"sport
spôrt/
noun
noun: sport; plural noun: sports
1. an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."

If we were to go by the actual definition, then performing sexual acts could be considered a sport. And when we monetize sex we get pornography and prostitution. I don't see anyone championing for sex sports, but throw millions of dollars at the idea and 100 people will line up ready to champion how great their "Xsport" is.

I wonder if the first people to play baseball ect were met with the same scrutiny about playing games competitively...

They didn't, they were just soldiers fighting a bloody American civil war that they were trying to forget about for a moment. Kinda like how the first video games were created, cause tabulating numbers all day long is boring as hell.

But hey what do I know compared to the sub-conscious majority. At one point in time sitting on a horse while you observed dogs chase down a fox and tear it to shreds was considered a "Sport".

No one is saying that what these people do isn't awesome and talented. They are fucking great at what they do. That's no where near the issue.

I do think it's funny when someone says "I don't think it's a sport, though" people flip their shit. :)

Keep banging your cane all you want, that ship has already sailed. At this point you just look like a bitter old man continuing to post that nonsense. Millions of dollars are being invested around the world in reports, get over it.

Manager in training. It'll all work out since more managers seem to be the answer to everything in a lot of companies these days.

Hey, nobody pushes a button like George Jetson, and he wasn't a manager (he got skillz).

wow this is greeeeeeeeeeeaaaaat. Do they get a letter and jacket too? Will there be an awards banquet and booster drive too? Fucks sake

Nah. Nice try though.

I like how this was posted a few hours before a post on obesity.
"How can I be fat? I play sports!"

That 9-year old that pissed herself playing Fornite was just an over-achiever ahead of her time.

Well, sure. Point is bikes and the likes of F1 also aren't about physical endurance or strength either, not for the drivers anyway. These days drivers don't seem half as beat up as Hakkinen used to emerge from his McLaren back then.

True.

I don't care either way. I'm not really that passionate about it. I don't care if it's considered a sport or not. I just don't think it is. It's a competition, for sure. Maybe because I grew up playing them from a small kid and they've always just been video games and sports were something completely different. I dunno. I'm good either way. If I have to call them sports, fine.

Are sports games considered an eSport? Or is that some inception type stuff? It's in the game!

I hear you. Are mammals considered humans? Or is that some deception type stuff. I am new to this mind games thing
