More news from the Game Developers Conference. Using 3Lateral's Meta Human Framework and Unreal Engine real-time rendering, Epic games brings us a digital Andy Serkis. The data was generated using a series of HFR images of Andy Serkis from multiple angles, the 3 Lateral's process did various capture scenarios, some for geometry, some for motion, and some for appearance. Combine them all and you get an incredible digital representation, that is in my opinion anyway, a little creepy. This would be amazing in the sequel to L.A. Noire.

While this is a stunning proof-of-concept achievement that for now will remain in the realm of professional visual effects, someday photorealistic digital humans will be used in interactive entertainment, simulations, research, non-verbal communication as an interface with the machines, artificial intelligence and mixed reality applications as well.

So given what Andy Serkis is normally up to, can the digital Serkis be used virtually for motion capture simulation for another character/creature? Serkisception?

Anybody else unimpressed? Especially since this wasn't a realtime demo or anything, they ran 3-4 passes to get the data for this, and it still was uncanny as hell. Why aren't his eyes moving? geez.. This is as far as we've gotten from the Nvidia Adrianne demo in 2006? Other than texture resolution, I'm not sure this looks any better.

They need to stop getting animators to animate these things... anticipation and action lines are unrealistic.

Yeah, tell me about it. They should process various capture scenarios, some for geometry, some for motion, and some for appearance instead of having animators do it. Super Fake /10

All joking aside, I thought it was impressive for what it was. The smaller you make the video the more convincing it is.

It looked a bit unrealistic, the face was too expressive. That being said, all the muscles moving together, even in the neck, were pretty well done.

Andy Serkis isn't a real person to begin with, he is a made up person that is only digital in movies. He is the current version of S1m0ne. They just turned down the effects for this version of him.

I liked this one better. The thing that brought it down for me was the exagerated british accent more than the character itself.

We're still not there, it's not a graphic issue, is a measurement one I believe.
We are not capturing certain attributes, and as a result things don't look complete
