Maryland has given transportation pioneer Elon Musk permission to dig tunnels for the high-speed, underground transit system known as a hyperloop that Musk wants to build between New York and Washington. Hogan administration officials said Thursday the state has issued a conditional utility permit to let Musk’s tunneling firm, The Boring Co., dig a 10.3-mile tunnel beneath the state-owned portion of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, between the Baltimore city line and Maryland 175 in Hanover.

It would be the first portion of the underground system that Musk says could eventually ferry passengers from Washington to New York, with stops in Baltimore and Philadelphia, in just 29 minutes. Maryland’s approval is the first step of many needed to complete the multibillion-dollar project. Gov. Larry Hogan toured a site in Hanover that aides said could become an entry point for the hyperloop. The state does not plan to contribute to the cost of the project, aides said. Hogan said on Facebook he was “incredibly excited” to support the project proposed by Musk, founder of the electric car company Tesla and the rocket firm SpaceX.

Maybe I'm missing something all you detractors can fill me in on... doesn't it seem as though it would be easier to keep a vacuum underground? The extra boon is all you need is the states permission individual land owners be damned.

From the videos I've seen, having this above ground would make it too easy to fail. Someone with a gun/rifle could just shoot into the loop killing everyone.

So basically from BWI to the east coast largest mall & casino. (Arundel Mills)

It's not like an airplane.
If the vacuum is compromised, then air added into the tube would cause increased resistance on the carts and would result in a quicker stop than if there was a vacuum.

I'm not sure if a gun shot hole would cause the tube to implode on itself, but I really doubt it.
Even if it did, I doubt the maglev tracks the cart runs on will catastrophically fail to a degree where the cart is allowed to fly off the tracks.

Airplanes have issues with unintended new holes, because catastrophic decompression rips apart their lightweight air-frame and control lines.
Trains can derail, but that's generally caused by operator error, poor track maintenance or obstructions in the path of the train.

I won't say that hyperloop is foolproof, but that situation you give seems highly unlikely.
In fact, over the past 50 years, how many acts of sabotage have we seen on high volume traffic train tracks that are highly exposed to tampering already?

That final sentence is exactly on point. I smile everytime people bring up vulnerability on here (has anyone noticed how weird it is that for a tech site every new thing is shit and won’t work)

Popping the tube might cause a lot of damage, but I can put an iron bar in front of a high speed train carrying up to 1000 people. Takes a couple of minutes, isn’t detectable remotely and would likely kill hundreds. i.e rail is exactly as vulnerable. Arguably more so because it’s harder to make something in a tube get flipped on it’s side when it’s still doing 200mph

The only one it would kill would be you if you stood by when it flew of the tracks.

How fitting to be undeservingly name dropped in an STD of a show.

BUT ITS NOT REAL!

-this forum
German maglev had a fully functional 10km test track with carriages and stations - still failed.

Hyperloop, has a smaller-scale rusty straight tube haphazardly slapped together and nothing else. - treated as proven techology.

Usually I'm against the naysayers of this forum, but in this case they're on the right side of the pitchfork.

And if you think a state running it is proof of anything think about solar freaking roadways.

One of the very interesting aspects of US law is that the land owners are considered to own the minerals beneath their land. In most (if not all?) other countries, land ownership does not include mineral rights. The State keeps that for itself.

If Ol' Elon wants to dig a tunnel under MY land, well, I'd be willing to rent my land rights...and keep the minerals. This is probably why he's using a path under a highway. (Will he be held liable for the extra potholes and frost heaves, etc?)

Stop watching movies and thinking they are documentaries. A gunshot hole (or even many holes) through the skin does not cause an airplane to catastrophically decompress......

Oh, I know a few bullet holes is unlikely to result in explosive decompression.

Explosive decompression is usually caused by bigger holes being ripped into the air frame.
Usually, it's the result of a cargo door getting blown off.
