Time is reporting that Elon Musk has deleted the Facebook accounts for SpaceX and Tesla following the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Following a call on twitter to delete facebook, Elon Musk was not even aware of the pages existance. Musk shortly after deleted both accounts.

While the quote below shows Musks stance on deleting the accounts. I'm still sure that his doing so will resonate to some extent.

    Elon Musk added on Twitter
Instagram’s probably ok imo, so long as it stays fairly independent. I don’t use FB & never have, so don’t think I’m some kind of martyr or my companies are taking a huge blow. Also, we don’t advertise or pay for endorsements, so … don’t care.

Facebook has a great messenger app. That's basically the only reason me and my friends still use it. Who even browses the news feeds anymore?

I never joined, but good for you...any withdrawal symptoms? :)

    Edit:
Er...didn't I just read somewhere that Instagram is owned by FB? Now where could I possibly have read that? Some tech oriented web site, I think. So wow that's really going to show 'em Musk!

I wish they'd all drop twitter.

As for this data thing, there are plenty of scumbag advertising companies scavenging everything at every point. Nothing is left untouched as long as google is around. Deleting a facebook account is pointless. The best thing is to not use their apps that give them full control of your devices. This whole "scandal" is nothing compared to what is not being outed.

At first the cynic in me said he did it to avoid irate customers tired of waiting for their Model 3's -- but he's still on Twitter so I guess he is good at filtering out the noise.

The problem with Facebook is that it's become a repository for my family photos for the past 12 or so years.

I imagine the accounts will be back online in due time, once the positive publicity from this has passed over.

Let's be real, all these 'social' platforms are are ways for businesses to interact with their customers and broadcast their brand message. Why is it advantageous for Tesla to disregard such a powerful tool? Space-X could realistically do without it, but then again it's nice to have Space-X on everyone's news feed to generate hype/inspire people.

Please don't tell me you put all your eggs in one basket. If FB disappears tomorrow (by say a hostile act)...well people could always start fresh I guess. Why do people trust their data to "the cloud" (rhetorical question)?

You don't need Facebook for their app. It's separate now.

I joined Facebook in 2006 and deleted it on Monday when Channel 4 broke the story.

Haven't even thought about it this week. MUCH easier than quitting smoking, haha.

If and when the proles delete their FB accounts, they will just line up for the next one. Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted anyhow.

And yeah....expected behavior from Teflon Elon.

The only reason I'm on FB (with a somewhat alias), is my main hobby is heavily skewed to FB groups for local sales, so it's either list there or lose out on a lot. Went with my full name years ago in like 2012 and had a bat-shit ex contact me within a few weeks, that was a quick way for me to go fuck this and leave it.

It only applies to businesses that target the poor and less than average IQ demographic. I can't see SpaceX or Tesla hunting for people who find the content in Facebook intelligent reading.

Elon Musk deleting a FB account is like Hugh Hefner deleting a Pornhub acccount...

He's got all the likes he needs already.

I'd like to know just how he was able to delete his accounts. I signed up with FB a year or so after they started, and within a week I was sorry. Back then I was unable to find a way to delete the account, so I just never signed in any more. Last year I heard there was a way to get rid of the account. So I signed in, found and checked the box that would delete my account. However, I got a message saying if at some future time I changed my mind, all I had to do was sign back in with my password, and my account would be restored! It does not sound like they actually deleted it.

You didn't delete it, you deactivated it. you have to dig for it but you can permakill a Facebook account, it can take several weeks for the system to catch up and purge everything. (If it actually does)

I had mine deactivated and some POS hacker from Venezuela of all places reactivated it. he wasn't able to change any of the stuff that required two factor authentication so I was notified of it.. Reclaimed my account and Permakilled it.

I have had a facebook account forever but never actually used it, as I considered it pretty pointless for me. No point in having one really, so just put in my deletion request. Nothing really on there, but, the fewer accounts of real people on facebook, the better it is for me. I doubt facebook will be able to get by long term selling the info of, and advertising to, bots.

I understand the desire to leave Facebook (or just never join) but why are people only realizing this now? Their entire business model pretty much from the start has been selling user information to whoever will pay them for it.

The straw that broke the camel's back? Critical mass of criticism (i.e. this story is everywhere)...a combo most likely. But I still think it will blow over in a short time.

I think it has more to do with people only just realizing how shady it is, coupled with the fact that not all of their friends use it. Are you on Facebook? Is a question I answered "no" to even when I still had one, because I just did not use it. If your friends and family are not on Facebook, it sort of becomes pointless.
