Change in virtual currencies

On January 18, 2012, EA switched users from game-specific virtual currencies to a common currency in four Play4Free games. Existing balances in the current currencies were converted into the new common currency - called “Play4Free Funds” - without loss for the customer. Affected games and currencies are:

Lord of Ultima - diamonds
Battlefield Heroes - battlefunds
Battlefield Play4Free - battlefunds

From January 18, 2012 all Play4Free games will use Play4Free Funds as the virtual currency. More information was posted on the respective games' websites at the time of change.

So honestly would it be a shorter list if they just said what they were not shutting down?

That's what I was thinking. Jesus.

What would make EA look a whole lot better than just shutting them down completely is if they'd allow the games respected community to continue hosting the master servers for games that still have some kind of community following.

Such as BF2. While I haven't played in a while, I would still like to revisit that game at some point to play. Seems it might be a lot more difficult to do now that they are planning to shut down the master server. I'd host if it they'd let me.

I wonder if mod community will figure out how to run a lot of the popular games via a mod. Example halo and the gamespy mod

i thought the neverwinter nights 2 community was still big.

hmmm

This is not an EA problem specifically, but this is a problem of many modern games now. Developers need to ask themselves "In 20 years will someone be able to play my game?". If the answer is no and the game is not specifically a massively multiplayer game then something is wrong.

Crysis Wars? Won't that screw up MW:LL?

Also, many of these games are really not that old.

lots of people play command and conquer 3 online. I don't get how they can sell games still that they aren't offering the full features on. Smells like an easy class action lawsuit to me.

They'll slowly turn up on EA's worthless "on the house" promotion on Origin.

It would take me a bit but I could come up with a pretty long list to defend my end statement. I mean me personally feeling burned by EA. I know a lot of people this it around, but I mean it.

I will never buy another EA game again.

This actually has nothing to do with this news. I think I got kinda fed up with the premium subscription microtransaction nonsense around BF3. When they kinda openly admitted withholding content and making me pay X for new map packs every few months, but also when they took Dead Space which was an amazing Survival horror and watered it down into an action game and filled it with microtractions. Anyway everytime I look at a new EA title coming out I can see right away how they're gonna fuck with me and I just avoid it.

I don't buy EA games. Not out of some moral protest it's just not worth the hassle of dealing with those fuckers. I hope they crash and burn.

The team is working on a Cryengine 3 game which is supposed to be 100% free. Hopefully it comes out, because the BF2 engine is old anyways.

lol

seriously, wtf is going on, gamespy is shutting down its server browsers for all supported games too.

All I can say is that in Gabe we trust :D

I have to wonder what will happen once games from the 2000s no longer function correctly. Will steam continue to offer downloads and support for them? (Think 5 - 10 years from now)

Steam as a platform is just over 10 years old. I wouldn't be putting my faith that in 10 years from now everything will be peachy.

Thankfully BF2 did have LAN mode, so you're not out of a game soon. BF3 isn't going to fare as well and will likely just fade away since there won't be any easy way to play MP. (And Single player is basically non existent) I really do continue to look for games that support LAN because we still fire up old games from time to time. BF2 could possibly have a DRM free GOG version of the game, but BF3 might be too tied to Origin and online for it to happen.

It's not a question really of whether or not Steam gets bigger, but a question of at what point do they decide to cut off support for legacy applications. At some point Steam is going to end up pulling the plug for Windows XP, and with it I would imagine a lot of DX9 games will start to head out to pasture. They simply will no longer want to support the mechanisms to keep those games working. Imagine in 5 years someone is attempting to download Counterstrike onto their Windows XP machine and has an issue. Is Valve still going to have someone on their support staff who knows how to troubleshoot the problem? I've used XP through it's entire lifecycle and it's already starting to get difficult remembering how to use it because I see it less and less every day.

Basically that's the same boat that EA is likely in with many of the games like BF2. XP support has ended so they are just ending their support for a game from the same era. Some of the others are just poor performers so they are getting the ax.

The part that will be interesting is to see how Valve does handle dropping support for legacy titles. Hopefully they will decide it's worth it to create patches and installers for your games so you can install them without Steam and they are still usable.

I know people really dislike EA but when I look at that list I mostly see games that are several years old and have multiple sequels or yearly releases already out. I find it hard to believe that there is any sort of major community around most of the games listed. It is a shame that people may be unable to host their own game servers though, maybe if EA released a server application for download that would soften the blow to those who still play the games?

Well, as others have mentioned, I see the biggest impact being with older titles who still have active mod communities, like Project Reality for BF2 and MW:LL for Crysis Wars.

Also, Crysis 2 is only 3 years old...I guess most people have moved on to Crysis 3, but I have heard of an "Aliens"-based mod for Crysis 2, so I guess if that ever comes out MP will be dead in the water.

Same with stuff like Red Alert 3, many of the Need For Speed games, etc...some are several years old but it's not like they're ancient.

If running the servers and maintain the game becomes a cost to the company rather than driving new sales that cover the cost plus profit then ANY company would shut it down.

It amazes me how people on here think these companies should cater to their every whim.

You have LONG gotten your $60 (or whatever) worth from these titles.

So for bf2 will you not be able to play online at all? not even on private servers? im going to be pissed if i can't play project reality any more.

They do that every other year. Nothing new here.

That's not fair considering they don't let people run servers as they please, so yeah.

BF2 is fine because IIRC you can use the connect to IP option and manually specify a server to connect to. So even though the master server list is down there should still be a way to play. I would guess you'll lose your unlocks and what not though as you'll have to create an offline account.

The problem is for other DRM games that require a connection to some type of authentication server, or require a login and don't have a connect to IP, LAN play, or dedicated servers. There simply isn't an option to play the game without the servers from the publisher. All the more reason to decide when you buy a game if having a way to setup your own dedicated server is important to you.

Just one more reason I prefer games that have dedicated server support and are DRM free.

I think most, maybe all of those games are run by Gamespy. Would be a nice PR move by EA to do something about that for games like BF2 or whatnot but if it's not making them money and don't really have a big player base I guess I can understand why they're not spending money on them.

This is not an EA problem specifically, but this is a problem of many modern games now. Developers need to ask themselves "In 20 years will someone be able to play my game?". If the answer is no and the game is not specifically a massively multiplayer game then something is wrong.
This.

I first played Diablo 2 in 2000 - 14 years ago - and it's currently installed on my PC and I still occasionally play it. There are VERY few games I own today that I'll still play 20 years after purchase. Hmm... let's see... Off the top of my head, these are the games that will probably make the grade

The original Borderlands (5 years old)
Half Life 2 (10 years old)
Dungeon Siege LOA (11 years old)
Diablo 2 (14 years old)

I'm sure there are others but I'm at work and my brain is fried. What's most noticeable about the games I truly love is that none of them are remotely close to being new releases.

I might add some more to this list when I get home later.

Again, not all of these games are 10-20 years old...some of them are as little as 3 years...unless the player pool is literally zero, there is NO REASON why they should be shutting down services for games that are less than 5 years old.

You must be young. I have thousands of games that are playable without a server. That s what buying a game is, you have the right to play it just like a movie you bought till you don't play it anymore.

:(

They'd better not shut down Battlefield Bad Company 2 any time soon...

That's the only game I really play frequently.. he later BF game are a step backwards IMO
