It's listed on pretty much all boards, has anyone tried if it actually works if you get a CPU that supports like the i3-series?

I believe ecc is a funciton of the chipset not the cpu; if z170 does not support ecc then a skylake motherboard that supports ecc will not be z170 :)

... On the topic of ECC, why do i3s support ECC but i5s do not?

Is this plain market segmentation? Why do i3s support ECC RAM at all?

Haswell i3's didn't support ECC. The last time we saw this occur was Ivybridge and only a few specific chips, which were in fact i3's.

I'm not sure what logic Intel uses to determine when and why ECC is supported on the consumer chips.

Interesting that MSI has decided to support ECC on some of the H170 & Z170 boards, I'll keep them in mind once the Xeons come out.
