2020 punts for new consoles notwithstanding I am going to make the same kind of gripe I've made for seemingly too many years.

2019 has been dead thus far. Half a year gone. Suddenly you get this glut of games packed in to a several week period from roughly mid October to just around Thanksgiving and that's it! Get a few trickles...rinse and repeat.

I know everything is about the almighty quarterlies and especially going into the holidays but it really would be nice to have a little bit more of an even spread throughout the year?

I agree...I don't understand why more publishers don't release games during off-peak times...it seems like the first 3 months of the year and last 3 are when the big titles get released (mostly the last quarter)...why not release more games in May or during the summer?...if I were a developer I would not want my game to be released in October/November and go against all the other big AAA releases...as far as 2019 E3, it seems most of the games announced won't be out till 2020...only Doom Eternal and Outer Worlds look like 2019 games

There have actually been fewer reveals than years prior. To Q-BZ 's point, though, it does seem like they're packing the holidays. This after there was a discussion within the industry that they need to spread things out since too many releases in a short period of time is bad for sales in the industry as a whole. Personally, I'll pick a game that I want to play immediately and then forget about the other games until maybe a year or two later while browsing a sale and say, "Oh yeah, I remember wanting to play this game." Then the publisher and developer get my business for $5-$10 instead of the full $60. This winter Doom Eternal will be getting my full attention while everything else gets to go on the back burners.

The movie industry figured this out years ago, why is the video game industry still being so stubborn?

Nobody says you have to play catchup and "play all the games" but you don't want to miss out. I have games from 2014 in my backlog installed on Steam yet.

What games are actually locked down for 2019 across all platforms? I'll be as generous as I can here.

Closely related question: When is the new Xbox expected to be released? Likely late 2020? (I'm assuming PS5 is 2021?) I know that's the big center of gravity on all of this.

Now how do your lists look, folks? 2019 only. 'Nuff said.

    Dragon Age? Never happen.

With all the EGS exclusives a lot of interesting games for me might be put back 6 months to a year after the exclusivity runs out, but that's fine I got more to play then I got time for anyways.

Also might make it that most of the wrinkles are ironed out.

From the above list posted, I mostly care about

    Borderlands 3
    BG3
    Cyberpunk 2077
    The outer worlds
Star War Jedi the fallen order

I would love a new dragon age bit i think it might be a while b4 we see one same for a new elder scrolls/fallout game

Comix must like Cyberpunk a lot as it is in there 2 times :p

I've got a serious backlog right now, but there are some pretty solid games that I'm planning on purchasing/playing this year. I can't sit there and play any game for more than an hour or so per day (bit more on weekends at night), so this list is already extensive for me, coupled with the backlog.

Judgment is out on 6/25 (but I've got the JP version which came out last year, still in its wrapping ready to go after a few more titles are beat).
    Yakuza 5 (JP) - 6/20
Fire Emblem: Three Houses - 7/26
    WoW Classic - 8/26
    Shemue III - 8/27
    Death Stranding - 11/8
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - 11/15
    Pokemon Sword/Shield - 11/15

I'm keeping my eye on a few others that don't have release dates, but I'm not even sure if they'll be here by the end of the year. Namely the new Harry Potter game that we have nearly zero information on.

    Good video regarding Sony's play:

I was surprised they announced Chivalry 2.

I'm not surprised Torn Banner made a deal for Epic exclusivity. They're at risk of failure considering Mirage was a massive flop and Chivalry was a fairly niche title. Mordhau is already filling the role of a Chivalry successor and looks way better than the Chivalry 2 trailer.

I'm actually a little surprised Epic was ok making a deal with them.

I don't have high hopes for it but I'm keeping an eye on it because it has potential.

I can see why you'd think that, some resemblance there.

Onerously though, she definitely has great presentations kills and I feel that I got a lot out of that short video. More so than I get from other publications.

Most of the games that truly interest me aren't coming until 2020 or later.
For the rest of 2019, it's basically just Outer Worlds, Borderlands, and maybe Gears 5. Death Stranding is still a big question mark for me.
I think the end of this console generation is making developers strategically plan their release dates.

I'm hoping there are some quality games coming out and not just quantity. I miss the older days where game play was more prominent than just being "pretty" graphics. I would like both or am I asking too much?..o_O

Overall I still feel like 2019 is being passed over to an absurd degree. I'm pretty deflated all told. Underwhelmed.

The first half of this year has been an absolute joke.

Because of the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro as well as the "upgrade" nature of the next-gen consoles, we aren't getting that final wave of hyper optimized games that usually come at the end of a console generation. At least a few companies (Capcom and Namco) are straight-up holding games back for the new console launches. You have to think there are others doing that. That way Sony and MS have some stuff to show off prior to launch next year.

Feels like a good time to catch up on your Steam backlog or take advantage of some sales I suppose.

Its a tragedy of the commons rooted in important human behavior. If your game ends up being the one that hits that holiday season you get tons of money. So nobody with any of these games is willing to take their game to the off-peak release times. A good example is the smartphone market, years ago the Asian makers decided to release in the spring, apple does the holidays, the asian makers have mostly never beat apple and all suffered because of it. I think another thing that influences this is that free 2 play games with more fluid release development are taking up alot of the slack in the offseason.

Finally some god damn positivity. I agree that some years have been underwhelming on the whole, I'm not blind, but I think we're at a point now where if you gloss over the previous year in terms of ALL releases (independent and AAA), there are a good number of hours to be spent playing games. I think what it comes down to for a lot of people here, is that the 1-2 games they really want haven't been released yet, and therefore it's tough to see the value of releases collectively.

No hurry. I just beat Resident Evil 7 the other day. Currently playing Axiom Verge and plan on starting Final Fantasy XV next. By the time I'm ready for these 2019 E3 games, they'll be $10 to $15.

IMO we've gotten some straight-up fantastic games in the last 18 months. The slowdown in high-profile titles really only relates to the next 7-8 months.

I was pretty bored by E3 this year, you can count me out for any hype on a sequel.

Its basically just three I’m actually excited for:

Cyber punk, outer worlds, and Ancestors.

I refuse to get hyped for a star wars game until they prove they can finally make a good one.

Will buy Doom and BL3 but not overly excited for them, but they’ll be nice.
