Since dyndns is apparently no longer free and no-ip keeps deleting itself even with their updater installed and running on my machine I'm in the market for a new dynamic dns setup... Any ideas? I only really use it to run remote administration and file servers from my house...

I use hamachi for that now..... No configuration needed, other than signing up for the account and then creating your VPN network, installing software on hosts, assigning hosts to vpn network. This software works on Win/Mac/Linux.

They no longer have a free tier? I just checked my free account and it was last updated Jan. 9 using the auto updater.

dyndns is now free it just takes some looking to find it.

I just setup it back up the other day

I used ZoneEdit for the longest time, but when they changed systems and turned the 5 free zones into 2 I had to look at other options.

I'm currently using Namecheap's Free DNS service, and its been working very well for me.

Did you have to create a Pro account to start with, then canceled within the 14 day period?

NO, you just have to use the free .org .etc etc etc names..

Your limited to 2 domains tho..

Mine still works perfectly..

Ugh...

According to their website:
Sorry for the delay in being able to respond to folks, but wanted to make sure I had accurate information before I posted anything. Dyn has shifted away from offering free DNS, but now offer Pro DNS Trials. Users will be able to sign up for a Pro trial with a credit card and be able to take advantage of all that Pro has to offer for 30 days at no cost to them. At any point in time, users can cancel their trial, and as a thanks for trying it out, they will be able to keep one of their host names for free.

To take advantage of this, new users will need to create an account at https://www.dyndns.com/account/entrance/

After you have created and confirmed your new account, you will see this screen giving you options to choose from: At the bottom, you will note that there is a link for signing up for a 30-day trial. Clicking this will start the process of beginning your trial, and creating host names. Again, you can cancel your trial at any time within 30 days of signing up and still be able to keep a host name for free.

If you get the message that you have already reached your maximum alloted host names (or something like that) and you are currently at zero host names, you will need to visit http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-pro-free-trial/ and click the "start free trial" button in yellow.

Please note - This only effects new accounts. We have grandfathered 4 million existing users whose accounts will not be effected.

For those of you with existing accounts...you lucky bastards. :D

I paid for mine, not surprised by this. you have a good product, that is mature, make money

Its around 30 bucks a year I'm gonna start paying for it so I can use one of my domain names for my test systems

Yeah, it definitely looks like one of the more polished services compared to the others. My shit-tastic router can only use DDNS from a select few services, dyndns.com being one of them, so I might bite for the Pro account.

Pretty sure the Dyn Pro (yourhost.dyndns.org) is $20 a year, with the Standard DNS being $30 (for yourdomain.com)

I also upgraded to a paid account with dyndns and I'm happy with that decision. They have a service that is totally worth the $20-$30 a year.

See my post above.

I see your post, but why does it say they offer one free DNS on their live website then? Why does your statement automatically trump mine?

Yours could be right but I am wondering why they don't say that on the link I posted.

The post you referenced is old. Register and find out for yourself. The only way you get a hostname is if you use their 14-day DynDNS Pro trial.

It was hard to find but I set up a free dyndns account for a client 3 weeks ago.

I had actually bought the service for them since I couldn't find the free anywhere. As I was configuring the account I ended up stumbling across what I was looking for and they ended up giving them a refund.

No problems with no-ip here, whats this 'deleting itself' your sayng? (just setup a 2008r2 box with no problems)

I did try it for myself just now and you do get one free hostname still.

"You currently do not have any DynDNS hosts. Try a free 14 day trial of DynDNS Pro - a great opportunity for users to test out one of our most popular services. You may keep one hostname free of charge for trying Pro."

That's what the message says when I set up a new account and add a hostname.

http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-pro-free-trial/

"If you cancel your Pro service, all advanced features with Pro will be removed and your account will expire without a monthly login. Should you choose to cancel, you will be able to keep one free hostname."

So to the OP. Start the trial, cancel it and you will get to keep one free domain. Then at least make sure you log into your account once a month or have your update client update your IP once a month even if it doesn't change.

What router? DD-WRT or tomato capable? They offer more choices for ddns providers.

It's a FiOS ActionTec router/modem, neither tomato or DDWRT capable. I'm exploring other options, like the ones you listed, for a dedicated router, though.

I use No-IP for my dynamic needs. Reasonably priced at $25yr.

I use he.net for my other DNS needs. Free and they rock!
