Duke nukem Forever was to be released today (april 1, 2010)

yeah. I was really bummed about that too.

If there was a single game that I've really been looking forrward to, it was a Duke Nukem 3D sequel.

oh well, 3DR isn't totally gone and GB said that it's still being worked on... so who knows. It might show up sometime in the future... if not, hopefully another company decideds to pick up the trademark and do another game.

Considering the money Take Two sunk into the game with nothing to show for it,I'd say it was 3DR that did the screwing. The game itself is the world's longest running April Fool's joke.

the history is take2 attempted to do an ip grab from 3dr they wanted the duke ip george said go to hell thus the current legal battle.

If this is true that means the game is less than a year from being completed which from the leaked footage is very believable.

If George had said yes, maybe we would actually have a game after nearly 13 years. It's not Take2's fault the game spent so long in development. The blame for that lies entirely on the shoulders of 3DR and its management.

Guess you haven't been following the DNF "news" They have had several "Footage Releases" over the years. I think the name says it all, it will be "Forever" before this game is released. Like others have said, this is probably the longest running Aprils Fool Joke ever, or is it forever?:D

I also would really like to see this game released but I also fear one of the problems with releasing it would be that it would get a M rating and that would mean most of the major retailers will not carry it, so it would need to be a electronic only release.

Huh? Do you mean AO? Because Wal Mart, Target, Best Buy, Gamestop etc. carries M rated games.....

If George had said yes, he would have lost his life long work and most beloved IP. Who are you to want a game "at any cost" even to the people who make it? Entitled much?

Honestly, I don't give a crap about that. If George was competent enough to actually finish a game within a reasonable time frame, then we'd have DNF already. He clearly isn't, so I think he should have given the game over to someone who is. A 12-year development cycle for a game, especially when nothing else is being developed at the same time, is simply outrageous. And what about Take-Two, who invested money into the game's development with the expectation that they would receive a product within a reasonable timeframe? If you were in their shoes, how would you like it if George came up to you and said "Sorry, the game isn't finished yet, but can we have some more money to work on it?" There's a point where you just have to say enough, and I think Take-Two was very lenient with the amount of time they gave 3DR to work on the game.

If anyone read the accounts of what went on during development of the game, they'd see clearly that it was stuck in an unending cycle. Every time some popular game came out with a better engine, they'd scrap whatever they'd developed and start over with that engine. They thought they could go on that way forever on the profits from Duke 3D.When that dried up,they started milking Take Two.It was a clear case of irresponsible mismanagement, and they deserved what they got.

Hmm, thought Prey came out at some point......

At best DNF was treated as a side project, oops, huh?

Oops, thought 3DR was involved somehow. Thanks for the heads up.

Still, I can't even imagine how a dedicated team based on development of one game for 13 years could never produce a product, but this has already been talked about over and over again so what's the point?

3D Realms was involved with Prey, but not as the developer. They published the PC version.

Take 2 didn't sink any money in to DNF. 3drealms financed everything themselves but they needed some extra cash to finish up and Take 2 denied them.

Random companies can't just show up at your door and be like "FINISH THIS PRODUCT OR WE OWN YOU!"

Take 2 paid for publishing rights, IIRC, and was disturbed to find out they'd paid millions of dollars for NOTHING. Wouldn't you be?

Picture this:

April 1st, you go to some retail shop, and see lots of DNF boxes.... yes, like you're gonna buy it!!
It might have the first one inside (shareware version on a floppy disk) :D

all sarcasm aside can someone fill me in on why DNF is such a big deal. Was there some narrative that needed to be carried on or something amazing about the first that hasnt been bested yet or something? I skipped that generation of games so i honestly dont know.

I'd say the main reason people fondly remember Duke3D was it's attitude and humor. What other game had alien pigs as the bad guys, had the hero tipping strippers and fighting in porno theaters,or had weapons like a shrink ray that let you step on your enemies like bugs? The sad thing is,somewhere along the way the developers lost track of what really made Duke successful.

If they make the game halfway decent I can easily see it being the best selling same of all time, simply due to all the hype

The hype is exactly why it wouldn't come close to be a top selling game, The endless hype and disappointment has made alot of people who were once interested stop caring. It'll have it's market, but Duke will never regain the fanfare from the golden days.

that trailer basicaly only shows 2 distinct levels meaning that the game is probably far from complete in any way

Considering the game has been in development over 10 years it really looks sloppy and nothing special..a game this long in development should blow everything away but it doesnt. A small group of skilled devs would probably make a game in a few years with better result if they got enough money.

What they had back in the half-life era looked better and more fun IMO. (Not graphically better, but who cares?)

George Broussard commented on that and said the Duke voice and music was added to the video. Otherwise it looks totally bad ass and absolutely like what a sequel to Duke3D should look and play like.

Well if the game was 'supposed to' go Gold on April 1st as the best April Fools joke ever, then I can't agree with you because they were closed less than a year ago. Less than 1 year left in development is anything but 'far from done'.

See, you don't get it. Duke Nukem isn't about 'setting a bar' for FPS. It's about kicking ass and chewing bubble gum. The entire franchise is just about having a shit ton of fun and blowing shit up with funny ass one-liners. If you think it's going to, or even is attempting to be the next Half-Life or Halo, your completely mislead.

That's exactly what caused the game's downfall, the people in charge became obsessed with making a game that outdid everything else graphically and completely lost sight of what made Duke successful in the first place. If they had concentrated on that, the game would have been released years ago.

In fact, we would prolly be a sequel, or even two, beyond DNF, were they to just keep true to the franchises roots. All most of us wanted was to grease pig cops, and send entire species straight to hell, with a side order graphical updates. :(

Yup, I agree.

*Sigh* I'll likely buy the game anyways, if it ever comes out.

they might be doing the game secretly and plan on releasing it on an unexpected date

It was a major step up from Doom II. It had 9 cool weapons (not counting the foot), real-world levels plus the space stations, humor, jetpack (!), etc. The player/character actually SPOKE, and was badass.

Quake came out as well but Duke was more likable. And we still don't usually have a vocal character or jetpacks.
