I think it will be helpful for people like me that still can't decide if they should go with Dual Core or Single ( FX-57 for example ) for gaming ( BF2 mostly ) ...

EDIT: by all those troubles I meant troubles with games only.

Thanks!

if you can afford dual core do it...simple as that and i know you can...

any new high end pc built with a single core should have their owner shot...

I would go ahead and get the AMD64 X2 4800+ , Overclock that CPU to 2.80GHz and you will have a pretty nice CPU. Others will tell you to spend $300 less and get a Opty and OC it to 4800+ speeds.

Dual Core @ 2.40GHz+ FTW ;)

im the 'others'

get a used opty170 for $500*** and oc it to 2.8ghz

edit: ***$500 changed price :p

Just a reminder: we are talking about rig just for GAMING.

I saw a bunch of people had or still have problems with dual core cpus and games. Especially I'm interested in BF2.

By dual core I mean all dual cores including X2, opty, FX-60... well FX-60 has way too high price I think

What troubles? All that is urban myth now - the "troubles" were all fixed with the latest BIOS releases.

Gee, I might have been out of time or something :p
I was reading some in Dual Core Gaming Fix Guide... but i guess it's old now

Bona Fide, could you please provide me with some good topic to read about it?

No idea what "troubles" you mean. If you install the amd dual core driver and the MS dual core fix as you should you have no problems. Stop spreading mis-information.

Yeah, it's all but fixed now. Just download the latest BIOS update and drivers for your motherboard, video card, etc. Here's the guide if you need help. I'd do all the steps anyway, just as precaution.

Yes mis-information is the following:

1. NFS: MW stuttering bug. Dont mind this one, because skipping around the road is not a problem at all.
Fix: disabling the second core at game start up.
Status: driver up date was suppose to address this problem, but from what I have heard it still is not fixed.

2. BF2 Random disconnect bug. If the disconnect doesnt get you the random crash back to the desktop will. The random disconnect problem is supposely caused by the cores conflicting with each other. New patch has only made this problem worse.
Fix: disabling second core at start up.
Status: patch needs to address this.

3. Nvidia display drivers. Many users were experiencing crashes in games like CS:S and WoW. I would get the crashes only when I multitasked with WoW. Reverting back to 70 series drivers fixed this.
Fix: revert back to drivers that are not dual core enabled.
Status: new drivers have fixed problems with some games and cause some problems with others. I am waiting for the 84.25 drivers to be offical. This problem seems to effect 7800 series users the most.

4.FPS cap in WoW. Running dual core some users report a cap of around 60 fps.
Fix: disable 2nd core at start up
Status: WoW is supposely working a patch to fix this problem

5. HL2 and CS:S and COD all have had previous issues relating to dual core processors.

If all you are doing is gaming. Stay away from a dual core processor for now.

the benefit isn't there yet. Spend the money on video cards instead. Wait until your next major upgrade to go dual core. I've used BF2 on single and dual core (Opteron 170 @ 2.4ghz) and I didn't noticed any improvement. FX-57 seems pricy but hey if you have the money. I struggled with my dual core setup for one month before I realized the Nvidia video driver was causing crashes. That may be fixed now, but I still don't recommend one for any gamer at the moment.

I'm willing to bet all of these problems can be solved with a few simple driver and BIOS updates, as well as the Windows hotfix if absolutely necessary.

Stop spreading FUD around, please.

i say none of the above. get the highest rated cpu you can while ensuring that you have 2x1gb of ram ;)

Crashing in BF2? The only thing I've done to my system was install the drivers. I haven't done any hotfixes or anything, and I've yet to crash in BF2.

Nope I have the hotfix and the updates.

Do you even play any of these games?

But the FX-60 is a silky smooth processor.

did you even regedit as you should? sounds more like you are having problems other people arent.

FEAR, NFSMW, BF2, CoD2, and other older games I've tried all work fine with my dual core.
of course, I did follow the guide.

The main reason I went with the FX-57 was because I just wanna play and get the best performance possible. I don't wanna do much tinkering, especially stuff like editing the registry. But thanks to you early-adopters, by the time my FX is obsolete, I can get a kick-ass dual-core system and have few gaming issues.

I play NFSMW, BF2, and HL2. I don't play WoW, but I also play Oblivion, FEAR, and CoD2. I would notice if there were any issues. And by the way, I'm willing to bet my Opteron performs better than your FX-57 at any rate, which would negate your entire argument. Not to mention that you spend $800 on a processor...

I get the random disconnect bug in BF2. Really an issue that happens occasionally but when it does I have to reboot to get it to stop for a while. Annoying as hell. That and it gets "choppy" sometimes and runs great sometimes too. Very, F0ing annoying.

Oblivion runs great btw no problems after the 84.25 drivers.

Tutelary said:
so 1 simple registry edit is beyond you?

No. But it shows the kind of troubleshooting and tweaking that must be done at this stage of dual-core and gaming. I'd rather just play the games.

Has anyone see a comparison of single versus dual core for BF2? I would like to see how much if any increase in FPS there is on similar speed chips. For some reason, I cant find this addressed anywhere. I see a lot of stuff saying it should be better and talking about how the dual core can be taken advantage of if programs use it. But how much if an actual increase is there?

Dual core all the way. The 'tinkering' takes about as much time as installing a driver. I never have to set affinity or have any problems with my games ever. I think that some may blame their problems on the dual core when the issues may be something else like drivers. The multitasking ability is awesome, too. Buying a single core would make me feel like I just got robbed........

unless BF2 is multithreaded you arent going to see a difference vs a single cpu which would be comparable to one of the cores in the dual core system. That being said, games and programs that are multithreaded offer significant performance improvements, and windows is butter smooth with a dual core. You'll find that people who go dual core dont run back to slightly higher clocked single core systems, as the benefits are just too great in the overall scheme of things.

i have 2 comps both with dual core CPU(opty 170s).
both these comps are mainly used for gaming only. no problems.
dual core all the way. especially for future proofing.

Darn, i want my 4800+ Soo bad. ha

Explain something to me then. With all these hoops set in place how the hell does one game on a Dell XPS dual core or a X2 Gateway machine. I mean the average user could not jump through all these hoops. Why the hell should we put up with it? If anything there should just be one hotfix.

huh I just reformatted and the BF2 problems are GONE. absolutely the fastest PC I've ever had.

Opty 170 stock w/ 2x1gb Corsair Pro and 7900gtx all stock timings speed and a 74gb raptor.

BLAZING and I'm not even ocing yet.

Thats hot, congrats on having a Blazing fast computer.

when i bluit my new rig not long ago i stuck a 4400+ X2 in there.

and ive NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER had any issue in any game program or anything. (other than a dogdy hdd that failed)

so :p:p:p to the people that think dual core is evil for gaming :D

AMD x2 FTW

I was wondering if anyone else was having problems with bf:2 after the new patch...

This is really starting to piss me off... I get the game running SUPER smooth, and then they release a patch that screws everything... Not only is my game crashing for no reason, even when infinity is set, BUT, it seems that my 7800 is having problems with bf:2 now as well since the patch...

For such a big gaming corp you'd think EA would want to do shit right the first time...

REFORMAT. I know it sucks but I had problems and did it and now it's smooth again. The FPS is low as shit sometimes going into the 40s but hey it runs SMOOTH again.

That's the patch, not us. EA better realize or they'll lose a helluva lot of customers. Anyway, I stopped playing BF2 because of Oblivion :p
