Has anyone heard of any details with the DS and Wii integration ? I can't find anything online, unless I'm searching for the wrong phrase. It is mentioned when you read about the Wii, but not even Nintendo's site says any details!

give it time im sure nintendo has something up its sleeve. id expect a similar thing to the psp/ps3

The new Pokemon has been announced to have Wii/DS integration as well as online play. I suspect it's one of those things they'll roll out at a strategic point during the summer when excitement and sales are at their yearly low-point. No point letting all the secrets out of the bag in one fell swoop, after all :)

i want to see a wii channel that let's you download DS game demos, and lets you stream them to your DS to try them out...

On the same note, i'd like to see a Wii channel or something that allows the Wii to somehow act as a wireless access point for the DS, so that I could give internet access to my DS without having to turn off WPA on my router.

I don't see how that's going to help your network security - instead of having an insecure router as an access point, you'll just have an insecure Wii acting as an access point. Nintendo needs to release a firmware for the DS that supports WPA - period.

And don't tell me about that magical WiFi adapter they've got - that's known to be insecure, and has already been broken. The only security it provides is terrible range.

who's going to hack into your wii via a not secure access point? what's the point of hacking into a wii? or a DS? lol..

Previous rumors I have heard have all been said here. I have heard about downloading DS games to stream to the DS. Or a game that allows the DS to act as a remote. Of course we can just keep the mill going until Nintendo officially says something.

It's like this: the Wii connects to the Internet, and hence, your internal network on the way. An attacker could use the Wii as a vector into your LAN, and then start sniffing/cracking all they want. Or maybe they could use it to send spam, release viruses, or gather/distribute child pornography.

There are many, many reasons to want an absolutely secure network, and putting gaming before security is a bad, bad idea.

but your wii and router use WPA... so you get WPA protection as opposed to WEP protection...

might as well use WPA over WEP no? follow me now?

a hacker would have to compromise WPA.. where as if you used you DS directly.. your router is now set to WEP (because the DS doesn't support WPA).. now you're more prone to attack.. if you used the wii.. then you get WPA protection

so that other posters idea is good...

I agree, that's a fabulous idea. I have no doubt that not only would it sell more DS's, it'd sell more DS *games* and possibly more Wii's (if that's possible, heh) to DS owners who don't currently have one.

Nonsense, if you've got your Wii connected to your WLAN you've got it connected securely via 128bit WEP. Granted, WPA would be better, but the bottom line is that your Wii's connection to your network is *secure*, as is your DS's connection. Both would be connecting INTERNALLY, not via some external means as you're suggesting, and thus the connection would remain secure.

It's well worth noting, however, that the likelihood of an individual network at a home being hacked is TINY at best. You should be massively worried about security at a business, to be sure, but at home standard WEP is fine for 99.9% of all people.

Yes, the reality is that nobody probably will ever try to hop onto your network and mess things up. But still, its a possibiltiy, and in a high density area its virtually guaranteed that someone will try and hop on your network at some point. Its very possible that someone might decide to use your internet instead of paying for their own if they have a full signal from their apartment or whatever.

Wep is not very secure at all. I know of several people who took wireless networking classes in college that built programs to break wep encryption, its not very hard to do with any sort of know how on the subject. You just have to intercept a decent number of packets and piece it back together. Not something your grandmother is gonna figure out, but not very difficult with the right knowledge. Wpa is a much better alternative, and there's no reason the ds shouldn't support it.

Ah, yes, the "WEP is secure enough" apologist crowd comes out to play. 128-bit WEP is marginally more secure than ROT13 at this point, in terms of ease of cracking. Maybe WEP is secure enough for your needs. But it's not for me, and it's not for a lot of people of other people.

As for your "both connecting internally", that's totally irrelevant. Your Wii (in this theoretical DS link configuration) is no less of an access point than your router's built-in wireless access point. Both of them are "inside" your LAN providing external access to it. _Both_ of them are a security risk if not secured properly. Ignoring one or the other is like locking your front door but keeping your back door unlocked.

The DS needs WPA support, period, and the lack of that feature is a gaping hole in the feature set.

Exactly, your quoted person is the same reason that I wonder around my neighborhood and crack people systems for fun. Granted I dont do anything malicious but its always fun to see what people have on their computers!! This is like the people that link their album for something like their computer mod or whatever but dont realize that you can back track through their file naming and get into deeper stuff. I actually did that once here to find a guy had a shit load of porn on his comp. Sent him a nice pm saying, hey might want to cover that up because the wrong person could do some real damage. Those are always fun!:D
