Drive Recommendation For Video Storage and Editing

Kind of getting back into YouTube. I haven't done very much video editing, wasn't sure how much the drive affects editing performance.

Would it be fine just to grab a large cheap external WD Easystore or Seagate Expansion drive at Best Buy, or should I get like a 3-4TB 7200 RPM internal drive?
I would also consider a large storage drive and an SSD to move current projects to.

Just looking for the best bang for buck option that won't hold my 10850K back.
 
Recommendations for a drive would depend entirely on the bitrates of video you are considering. If you're working with professional grade video at high bitrates, then fast (NVMe) SSD is basically your only option. If you just want to do hobbyist type stuff and are working with video in pre-compressed formats, then even a mechanical HDD is enough.
 
Just hobby type videos, 4k 60FPS. Nothing special.

Im thinking of upgrading my media storage drives to 12TB and could use the 5TBs for this.
 
You'll get the best editing performance with an ssd (any type), but you can get a 1tb 'scratch drive' for that and then can use the 5tb drives for storing the final projects.
