So I received a package from a very generous [H] DCer, tedkj.
Inside was a nice 8800GT, Gigabyte 256MB.
Looking around, I realized I had used up all of my PCIe x16 slots and I needed a home for this card....I knew that my work P4-3.8 had a PCIe X16 RADEON R600 in it, but only a crappy 305W Dell PSU in a semi-proprietary form factor, the wiring/pin outs were normal, but size, shape and mounting are different from a standard PSU.
That little Dell PSU would scream like the Wicked Witch of the West if t If I tried to run a GPU2 client on an 8800GT with that power hungry P4 in there. ( By that I mean it would scream "Help me I'm melting" )
The Dell still has 1.5years of a 3-year warranty left..... but screw it.
So I cut a chunk out of the rear sheet metal and plastic cover, bent a few tabs and drilled a screw hole. The new Earthwatts 430 fit just fine after some slightly-more-than-minor surgery and the 8800GT had plenty of room.
+5k PPD and -1 warranty. Fair trade, I'd say.
