I mean I can understand the words, but I have no clue about your political and economic background, and this statement hinges on your background, because you can be suggesting any number of things. Believe me, I've heard the versions I offered in my previous post uttered to me so don't look so perplexed, those aren't my views, I was just guessing what you were trying to say.

The price of RAM affects the price of the laptop. I bought mine a year ago and it was just before the refresh out of existing stock. The current version of that laptop has half the ram a lsightly better video card, and everything else is basically the same. It's $300 more.

I've been kind of ignoring this because I built my rig before this steady increase hit. This thread went and made me check newegg. I paid $174 for my 32GB PC32000 kit (4x8gb) and I thought it was pricey because DDR3 was still occupying a decent chunk of the market for cheap. It's now $458 for the exact same stuff. Dayum.

I understand where are you heading, you are thinking about a textbook perfect competition. But you should remember the conditions for a perfect competitive market:

1) infinite amount of suppliers (which doesn't happen in reality)

2) Given point N°1, none of the suppliers can have influence over the price and all of them are price-acceptants ( which doesn't happen in reality)

3) Homogeneous goods, all suppliers deliver the exactly same good and there's no product differentiation whatsoever (which doesn't happen in reality)

4) Perfect information, everybody knows the cost, specs, conditions, fabrication, etc; of the goods (doesn't happen in reality).

The market won't fix itself to perfect competitive prices if the conditions mentioned are not present. That's why you have market failures, such as monopolies, market power, collusions, predatory pricing, etc. As long as the market is not perfect and predictable, there needs to be a regulator who sets the limits.
