Hehehe. Not regularly. I'd have to get surgery again in order to do that again. Pretty stringent testing for that stuff at my job. I do like to drink when I play certain games though. :D
 
The graphics look really good for an older game. Also the keyboard/jgamepad integration works well. The game shows controls based on what you touched last, so tap the keyboard and it shows keys to press. I did some of the intro. Just confusing because I don't know what I was doing.
 
Dumb question: Where is the soundtrack and bonus content like that located?

At the moment nowhere. Capcom is apparently looking into what happened to cause people not to get the bonus content.

I have one of those, The bottom of the display is clipped. Since that is where the submit button is it was hard to figure out how to change the resolution. I run games in a window anyway so I can browse and watch porn at the same time,

saw that elsewhere today. I'd use this because I got maybe 6 hours into the ps3 game.

Too bad theres 0 instructions on how to get the save files out.
 
Some impressions after about four hours:

Despite it being a PS3/360 game it doesn't look bad. The art style for the game helps a lot, but it does show it's age in some spots.

It's so nice to be able to play this game at a frame rate higher than a PowerPoint presentation. I couldn't play the PS3 version for long because of how badly it performed.

Speaking of frame rate, it's nice to see they locked it at such a high number. I routinely get around 130-140 FPS with everything maxed at 1920x1080

Keyboard and mouse controls are really really good. There are some minor annoying issues, like the confirm button being backspace and inconsistent mouse usage in the menus but it plays incredibly well. I was prepared to use my DS4 controller on the game but not now.

Speaking of the DS4. The game supports both XInput and DirectInput controllers natively. Why doesn't every game do this? The unscreen button prompts for DirectInput controllers are rather ugly though.

The combat system is great. Some of the DMC3 and 4 team worked on this game and there is a smoothness to the combat that shows it. Better than Witcher 3 and miles above anything Bethesda has done.

The writing so far is not great. It's serviceable and not insultingly bad (*cough*SkyrimandFallout4*cough*) but it's nothing you will really remember either. The game is all about it's combat and the world.

The music is really good. There aren't many game soundtracks I'd listen to outside of the game, but Dragon's Dogma's is going to be one I keep returning to.

Cutscenes still feel a little low-res and console quality. It looks like they didn't do much work on them.

I'm not sure whether I find all the chatter from the Pawns charming or annoying, thankfully there is an option to shut them up.

Some of the battles in the game give me that same feeling of accomplishment as finally beating a challenging Dark Souls boss after several tries. I was just wandering around and ran across a random Cyclops. He killed me once but I managed to get him the second time. I think I might have been a bit under leveled for the fight, but it was a really great long battle.

Pawn AI is amusingly bad at times. I've seen them jump off cliffs in order to chase a fleeing enemy. I love that your main Pawn will learn after your actions, meaning you have to be aware of what you are showing them or you could risk giving them bad habits. Of course I have a bad habit of picking up items mid-battle in all of these kinds of games so I need to be aware of that and make sure I don't teach my Pawn to do the same thing.
 
Might have to pick this one up at some point...like you Derangel, I couldn't really get over the framerate when I tried this on the PS3.
 
Crap I got a a quest bug...I can't finish the Lost and found Quest. Unfortunately if you get to the end of the Lure of the Abyss quest even if you do not officially complete the Lure quest you won't be able to finish the Lost and found quest. I tried teleporting to avoid finishing the Lure quest so I could finish Lost and Found first, but the game won't complete the last step of the quest so it fails in end no matter what. Just a warning in case you want to finish that quest.
 
does the game require you to use pawns?...meaning you cannot beat certain bosses/enemies without them no matter how much you are leveled up?...I normally hate forced NPC's 'partners' in games...some exceptions include Alyx from Half Life 2, Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite and although I haven't played it yet I hear Evie from AC: Syndicate is also well done...do I have to use pawns in Dark Arisen?
 
Special note for newcomers. If you ALT Tab out of the game the menus will assume your choices were the first on the list. My family never calls me, but when they want something, they chain call every 3 minutes. I was wondering why the character customization was so sparse and why didn't the game allow me to customize my pawn. Found out I must have ALT Tabbed to look up crap for my family during the time I was supposed to choose those options.

In short, don't ALT Tab during dialogue or character creation as you may mess up your game. Also you can attack friendly NPCs in the first town and supposedly NPC remember if your actions. Thus I'm creating a new character at 5:30am. :)


For those on the fence about this title, this game is f*cking awesome. If you run across a tough enemy, don't forget to hit the F key to climb on them. I fought that cyclops / troll thing that sounds like the one Derangel fought outside one of the first camps. I climbed onto his knee and cut his ligaments in his knee / hamstring. This made him fall like a sack of potatoes. Then my pawn muttered something about his desire to attack the head. So while the cyclops was down, I climbed onto it's shoulders. He stood back up and I commenced to slicing his head and throat. Made really quick work of him!

Another tip is that you really want to time dodge and shields in this game to avoid damage. If you at least 1/2 ass it you will be a great fighter. If you stand there and eat a heavy blow you will be knockin' on heaven's door pretty fast. So pay attention as the last thing you want is a guy in front of you and another behind you charging up heavy attacks!

A tip, if you make a character and get in-game and it doesn't look good and want to remake your character, instead of starting a new game, simply switch difficulty from normal to hard (If you are on hard, switch to normal and THEN to hard), when you go to hard the game starts again but from character creation instead of the prologue, so you don't have to replay all of that crap before you make a character.

Then once you get in game and have a character you like you can switch to normal and go one.

This also works if you mess up with npc's or have a quest mess up and want to restart without doing the prologue.

I think you have to use at least one and that is your pawn specifically. You don't have to have a full party though so you don't need to get the other two pawns for your party if you don't want but it will make the game harder for you. I don't think there is anything you can't beat eventually if you level past them but you will have a hard time when you encounter things that are above your level. I know in one area I was too low level so I could barely scratch one of the enemies with a full party. It's why I ended up hitting that quest bug. I wanted to level up a little so I ended up doing a quest earlier that I shouldn't have done before I finished off the one I was trying to finish.

that sucks in a way...I prefer playing games solo without any NPC or partner/team type of system...I did like the Mass Effect system because the characters were so interesting but that was a rare case...hopefully the pawns aren't too annoying and stay out of my way :D

You can turn off their idle chatter so they only talk when spoken to and you can even turn off their subtitles.

that's a nice feature but I also meant that hopefully they don't physically get in my way during combat and try and stay out of the way while I do most of the work...I want them to be more of a support role

If you make them all mages they'll stay back and won't bother you. You can also set them to support (F3 on the keyboard) and they'll mostly focus on healing and buffing.

Personally I like the pawn system and I play a mage. My personal pawn is a strider and I generally get a warrior and a healer/buff type secondary mage to round out the party. I generally pick and choose the secondary mage to have all the spells I don't want to have to cast. The system is interesting because each pawn plays differently. For example I had a great pawn from someone else that was well experienced so it knew how to deal with a Cyclops really easily, but then I had to let them go cause I over leveled them, the replacement was not good at all. It didn't know how to fight one till we killed it. Now when it goes back to it's owner it will know how to deal with a cyclops if the owner hasn't fought one yet and also a chimera since we just took one out.
 
So a little advice for those starting out, all from personal experience:

This game will kick your ass and laugh at you while you are dying. Remember to save often if you are just wandering around.

The nights are some of the most tense and nerve wracking moments I've had in an RPG in a long time. Do not adjust the brightness on your monitor or the game so you can see at night, it's supposed to be pitch black.

If you haven't turned Pawn chatter off, listen to them. They get annoying but rented Pawns can offer advice on quests, areas, and new enemies.

Do not get attached to any of the rented Pawns. Your main Pawn is the only one that levels with you so you will want to change out rented Pawns after they stop being effective.

Do NOT talk to the girl on the pier in the first town when you get the quest. That quest line is meant for much higher level characters.

You can kill every NPC in the game so be careful where you aim.

If you play the game sloppy and poorly your main Pawn will do the same. Always remember how you are engaging fights and what actions you are taking. The main Pawn is like a child or a puppy, you have to teach it good behavior.

The game will kick your ass. I know I said that already, but it will. Don't get mad if you keep dying to bandits early on, they suck, they attack in groups, they will ruin your day. Walk away, level up, get better items, examine your Pawn set up to make sure they're ideal for the fight.
 
That's the great thing about this game, it doesn't care what you do and happily lets you go anywhere you want without even telling you, haha you're f**ked now. :)

The day/night cycle in this game is one of the best features. You really can't see far at all and things will jump out at you. I was trying to get to a location but it was far enough away that I couldn't do it while it was light cause of all the bandits, but I took care of them and then I saw these small points of lights 6 of them in the treeline moving strangely and I knew it had to be a monster. Saved my game then walked a few feet and boom chimera. I really wouldn't have even noticed it if I didn't just finish a battle with bandits. It would have been a mess if I had tried to run past them and gotten jumped by the chimera with the bandits in tow.

I really love the game it's been a while since I played till 3:30 am 2 days in a row. :)
 
Capcom is looking into the reports of bugged pawn exchanges in the PC version of Dragon’s Dogma...parts of the system are working fine; you can hire and fire the pawns belonging to friends, and they will gain knowledge of quests and enemies accordingly...however, it seems that the rating system (where you rate the pawn based on appearance, helpfulness and the like) and the mechanic for returning the pawn with a lovely gift (or some manky old crap, if you prefer) are currently not working

The issues spawned a long thread in the Steam community forum for Dragon’s Dogma, which has attracted Capcom’s attention. ‘Wbacon’, who seems to be the main company representative for the PC version, posted the following update:

“The dev team has been monitoring the reports regarding the pawn exchange issue. They will investigate further and hopefully be able to identify the root cause as soon as possible. Please stay tuned.”...

I read about that earlier. I didn't even think that the rating system was bugged when I checked my pawn stats earlier. I just thought that there weren't that many players so no one used my pawn.

Capcom’s investigations into the persistent issues with pawn trading in the PC version of Dragon’s Dogma have turned up a corrupted server-side database...an announcement on the Steam community page for the game suggests this has now been fixed, so players who are borrowing and lending out pawns from other people should start to see rewards, ratings, and gifts being transferred correctly...

so in the beginning where you choose your first pawn, they are all level 6.... and a level 30 one. why the discrepancy? Is that the one to pick, a freebie?

The level 30 is most likely someone's pawn that is on your friend's list.

The sound mix is a little off, but it's mostly with the Pawn dialog. The other sounds drown them out sometimes. Given how much they yap that isn't always a bad thing.

I dislike the lantern mechanic. mainly crafting with one then finding I did not have one at night. so the fast travel sucks.. so wind up traveling in the dark. The hardness is a bit strange. The enemies are not overly aggressive. In other words they could fuck your shit up but some just tend to hang back while they get nibbled away. Others run back and forth. The inventory is an absolute time sink cluster fuck. The weapon attacks for kb/m are just not intuitive. R-click arrow, alt for special, release r-click, r-click again for special attack.... anyway lots of bitching but all the same there is a lot to like about the game.
 
I keep going back and forth on whether to pick this up. the Pawn system sounds cool, but I hate difficult games so I feel like I would just get frustrated.
 
welp, get some buddies on steam and you can have their higher level pawns available, unlike other games that enforce balance. add jiminator :)

What do you find hard about the lantern? It's not at all hard (or costly) to keep some oil on you for when your lantern gets low, not to mention how you constantly find it in loot or jugs of it in random places to fill up.

Also you can re-bind the keys if you aren't comfortable using the right click for that skill change it to something different.

Fast travel in this edition is 200x easier. In the original game there was no fast travel until much later in the game.

In this edition when you get to Gran Soren (Which should be fairly early into the game) you can go to the Inn to get an eternal ferrystone (in your storage there). After this you are able to travel back to Gran Soren or Cassadris whenever you want. SOOOOOOOO much easier than how the game originally was.

That was seriously one of my biggest complaints when I first played this game on the 360, having to constantly go back and fourth over those areas again and again and again, got so repetitive and boring. Now it's a breeze.
