I've been a little bit worried about Dragon Age, because I've been waiting for it for five years, and my expectations are so high that it wouldn't be difficult for me to be letdown (especially since I've just finished playing two games that are now on my list for potential best game of 2009 - namely: Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Risen).

Any fears that I had have now been allayed - because of this video.

http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-dragon-age-origins/17-1477/

No spoilers here, really. It's just gameplay footage by a kind of goofy guy who's just playing through the game like a normal person would. (Note what he says about the top-down isometric view: he said he was convinced, being an old time RPGer, that he was going to play from the top down view, but found, to the contrary, that the low-down, in-close view was more practical, and better looking. This guy plays the game exactly how you're 'supposed' to play a game like this... he pauses a lot, and switches the camera around a lot.) (And yes, he does play low down, and yes it actually does work, and yes it does look amazing! You can really see the detail of the rooms inside that church building... and man is it ever smooth!)

The one word that strikes me here is - polished.

Just look at the level-up screen. It's in the form of a beautiful book, and it looks incredibly detailed. The engine looks nicely optimized as well. Also, there's word that Dragon Age will be available on Steam, which will be great if you want Dragon Age right away.

By the way, the guy playing the game is pretty cool - but his buddy is irritating (hey, just like my buddy!)

I've watched this twice now.

I want this game... SO badly now. (This has got Game Of The Year written all over it.)

Looks really cool. I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but now I'm annoyed that I do. Do I support DRM & EA or miss out on a cool game?(looks like what NWN should've been).

lol that commentary is hilarious.

The commentary is funny. His 'buddy' reminds me of my own friend - always there, ribbing me with some sarcastic or silly comment.

But man oh man, this video is showing a very polished game indeed. I'm really surprised at how much detail there is in that church. And the guy playing the game is dead right - the game does work better when you've got the camera positioned way down low. That surprises me because I thought for sure I was going to play from the classic isometric view (I'll probably be jumping around a lot, but I'll probably spend most of my time right down near my character.)

The guy said he was playing on the normal difficulty level, and right away (this is very early in the game) he was running into troubles. He obviously knows how to play the game too - did you see him quaffing potions, and organizing his party members, and casting all the right spells? Fantastic. The game is going to be a challenge.

This is going to be Bioware's return to its PC roots, and maybe its finest hour to date. I was a huge admirer of Shadows of Amn, but I believe that this game has the chance to surpass it.

Just a great, great gameplay video. All these silly trailers we've had to sit through pale in comparison to a simple video of a normal guy just sitting down and playing a mere 20 minutes of the game.

Can you tell how excited I am about this?

I hope the storyline is good as well. It feels a lot more like BGII and their old games than NWN/NWN2, but transitioned to 3D. I'm not too surprised that he's playing like that though. Bioware probably limited the distance that you can zoom out, which also made that way of playing more effective in NWN(you could see much further into the distance) unless you messed with the game to allow yourself to zoom out farther.

The game looks awesome. The major downside I have with it though (and this isn't something new) is how you have to pause in order to do really well in combat. It just feels like its taking away from the experience when you force yourself to pause in order to make sure you do everything perfectly in each encounter.

the only thing that bothers me is u get different items based on what store u buy the game from each store has its own special order item sucks that u cant have all tiems in the game..imo that is counter productive.

I doubt very much that all battles will be this way - but this is what the hardcore RPG gamers have longed for.

We actually want these battles to be so difficult that you have to pause and make certain that your party members are quaffing potions, and casting the appropriate spells, and using their special abilities. It's all about tactics.

I realize though that we haven't seen this type of game since... well, Baldur's Gate 2, actually. Some people are going to be confused by this, I think, and will mistakenly attempt to play it like it's Titan Quest.

Myself, I've been waiting five years for this. This is exactly what I wanted.

Can someone answer this for me. They said you're the Grey warden or whatever, is grey warden like a title for your hero, or a specific class? Because i really want to make my own class. Like the guy in the video had a mage.

The Grey Wardens are kind of like the Jedi Knights of DAO. A group of people that fight the Darkspawn. They're not controlled by any government and they have power above the law.

I hadn't been keeping up with this game, but after watching that video I'm hooked. Was going to get Risen, but now I'm gonna preorder Dragon Age.

Risen is still a great game to come back to though, after you beat Dragon Age.

If it's anything like Bioware's other games though, then it'll be easily broken.

Risen is a game to be enjoyed now since we have to wait another month or so for Dragon Age. No reason to wait. Buy both! :)

I'd have to agree about Risen.

I've been waiting five years for Dragon Age, and it actually looks like the wait is going to be worth it - but Risen is a very, very well done RPG. I've been sucked right into it.

Sidenote: I like Risen so much that I'm going to be revisiting Gothic 3 with all the community patches. Risen has put me in the right "mode" where I think I can get a lot more out of Gothic 3 and appreciate it more now.

Until Dragon Age comes out and then it's all over. ;)

I hope DA comes out with a big bang and meets the expectations. Batman:AA really is the first batman game in ages to be worth anything and it was fantastic...got my hopes up for upcoming games anyway.

This is a really great video. Way to go Tower Guard! :D

Compared to EA's awful marketing with "This Is The New Sh*t" and 700 cut scene video promotions. If I only saw EA's marketing I would not buy this game. Luckly, EA's German division posted real gameplay on YouTube so I knew the gameplay would be great. Germany has like the hardcore RPG gamers there, I bet there were no cut scene videos promoted over there. But if you haven't seen those, this video would change your mind in buying Dragon Age.

I preordered EA's Dragon Age Collector's Edition since it came with that section which I don't remember what it is called. I can not wait.
