Anandtech just had an article up which stated they now expect HAMR implementation drives to arrive in 2018, after initially expecting them in 2016.

There goes any chance of gains in capacity with decreases in cost per GB.

Well, they can probably wring another 50% out of PMR, and with Seagate going to Helium too later this year WD will have to bring down their huge margins they currently enjoy in the 8TB/10TB space.

Realistically, I can't see Helium being used in consumer grade drives.
If it was ever offered, I would not want to own such a drive.

Helium is one element that is extremely difficult to contain and is known to leak from sealed environments. A small microscopic crack in the casing or seal could cause all Helium to leak and might lead to mechanical failure.

We might see PMR 10TB drives, but at what cost and in how many years. Competition now between mechanical drive vendors is mostly non-existent.

The threat from NAND manufacturers seems to be the only thing driving hard disk advancement.
