Does The World Need Another First-Person, Team-Based Shooter?

I think there is plenty of room for another great first-person, team-based shooter. What we don't need is another mediocre "me too" shooter. So, as long as CliffyB and company put out a good game, there is plenty of room for LawBreakers. Am I right?

Bleszinski is talking about the market for online, first-person, team-based shooters -- a niche genre that, in mid-2016, is on the verge of over-saturation. Overwatch just came out and it's been a monstrous hit for Activision Blizzard. It dominates the front page of Twitch and there are already plans to transform it into a truly competitive, esports-focused title. Other similar games, such as Gearbox's Battleborn or Epic Games' Paragon, are also on the market but they can't compare in terms of player numbers or hype.

There is always room for another great game. Just not so much for the cookie cutter style games. Same game, different assets.

What really sells me on games like this are the game modes.

Team deathmatch and CTF can only take you so far. What really hooks me into a game like this is team based missions like they had in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and UT2K4 (onslaught/assault).

Does anyone remember a trailer for TF2 from a REALLY long time ago that came with like the original HL cd? It was not the cell shader looking game that was released, it was this amazing trailer with an assassin that moved out of the shadows and knifed someone. The shadows were the craziest thing I had every seen in a game, I mean even now. I'm sure that's where the hype for the game came from. Then they let it dwindle down and released TF2 as we know it.

Esports...lol. Here is the typical esports athlete.

Just give me a game without ranking up.... or trying to sell me micro transactions. I also want community mod support . I'll be happy with that.
Not going to happen.

As it's been discussed by devs, people basically demand "ranking up" features built into games. That's why in overwatch, it's there but at least it's only tied to the cosmetic system and nothing that affects game balance so it's just a meaningless carrot on a stick. Same goes for the microtransactions, they're cosmetic only and have zero impact on gameplay.

Expecting a game from a large publisher to do without either these days is unreasonable(because it's unrealistic), but at least when it's only cosmetic garbage the impact on the game is irrelevant.

As far as the community mod support, yeah that would be nice.

Imagination and good implementation of those imaginations is what I want. Heck, I'd want to see a MPS (Redneck Rampage, anyone?) that implements a ability to call pigs which attack the opposing team.

"Dude! You got porked!" :ROFLMAO:

Yes, it had a more realistic tone to it as well. I remember one of the things they were doing is that machine gunners would fire faster and not overheat as much if there was another support player nearby.

There's always room for another title as long as they innovate. The problem is that a lot of games try to mimic what is popular. So for instance Battlefield has gone away from their roots towards being a CoD clone.

I am still waiting for a good rebirth of what Planetside once was. My opinion was that Planetside was a great game that was ruined by devs who ignored their users and pushed on them things they did not want. And that is an old story we have seen many times before.

Many would think that Planetside 2 would be that game but it is not. The new Warhammer 40K Eternal whatever game that is running now as early access could have been but those devs don't have the vision to make it happen.

An open world MMOFPS with some tightly controlled RPG elements and no pay to win micro-transactions is the ticket. But know one is stepping up to do it right.

This.

I signed up for the Lawbreakers Alpha, no word on that yet.

CliffyB has a pretty good track record with UT2K4 and Gears, so I will at least try it. I find him irritating for some reason, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know how to make good games. Shooters specifically.

Everyone wants to be a Tf2 clone. This game looks like a combo of TF2 and UT3.

reminds me too much of overwatch personally! Cool and all but I don't think it's enough of a distance to take market away from overwatch

Actually it's much more like, random Asian male between ages 16 and 20.
Either you are taking a piss, or you actually have a very big misunderstanding of the anatomy difference between Caucasians and Asians

Or did I misunderstand and you were trying to refute the stereotype?

Um...that would be the latter. ;)

As long as it keeps those who want to go around shooting, in their houses looking at a computer screen, instead of outdoors shooting a real gun at real people. Make all the first person shooting games you can if it might help vent pent up aggression in a harmless way. Maybe they should even write some for terrorists to get their jolly on instead of doing it in reality. Maybe they could even make a blow yourself up game with some kind of add on device that bolts onto an office chair, that will hit you in the back of the head when it goes off, then watch a little graphic spirit float off to it's 73 virgins (then we get to the porn add-on devices).
