Does 1080p content scale well on a 1440p monitor ?

Hey guys,

Does a 1080p output (including games that run on 1080p, consoles etc) have some short of blurriness when shown on a 1440p monitor at full screen ?
Has anyone tried this and can confirm a 1440p monitor is not worth it unless you run everything at native resolution or is it theoretical hyperbole ?

Yes, I ran 1440p for a while (as well as a 4k tv) and 1080p scaled doesn't look great. Depending on the settings, it could be playable but visually worse than 1080p would look on a comparably sized display. If you don't have the GPU to run 1440p (and don't plan to buy one) you may be better off with a 1080p display.

I'm toying with the same issue. Looking for a G-sync or Freesync monitor. Kind of settled on 1440p, but I also want to hook up my PS4 to it. Sounds like I'd be better off with 1080p.

I have a 27" 1440p monitor that I set to 1080p in the nvidia control panel when I work from home. This is for software development because the text is just too small at 1440p. I've had no issues with blurriness. However, I don't know if the PS4 can scale as well as my GTX 1080 does.

With a 1070 Ti you should be able to hit 60 fps+ at 1440p. However, you might have to turn settings down to reach high refresh rates.

1440p is kind of the sweet spot in quality. 4K is too hard to drive without a top end card, and 1080p can have a somewhat softer image.

If you have a decent GPU (let's say a GTX 1080 or 1070 Ti) 1440p is probably a nice choice. But if you want a smoother experience, I think 1080p high-refresh is not bad.

Well I am coming from a 40 inch 4K TV. It's nice but my girlfriend needs a new TV so I figured I would downgrade and try a variable refresh rate monitor. I have both a 1070ti and a RX 580 so I could go either way. I'd like to keep it larger but 32in at 1080p would be pushing it considering I am coming from 4K but I would like a little bit bigger monitor than a 27in 1440p.

I think 32" is a nice size, and 1440p will probably be better there. With G-Sync/FreeSync, hitting the refresh rate locked is not needed, so it should be okay if you can't get the full 144Hz (or whatever the monitor it).

Looks like at 32 in the g-sync tax is $200. That's a little tough to swallow.

1440p monitors at 1080p look blurry and bad.

For console use or non-native resolution you’d be better off just buying a 1080p display.

It depends on the monitor how good it looks scaled up.
I havent seen 1080p to 1440p look good but I have read reports people are happy with it.
You had best check opinions for the specific monitor you intend to get.

1080p scaled to 1440p might be playable but will be visually worse than 1080p native of the same size. Of course 1440p is nicer if you have the GPU, but if you plan to render at 1080p you are better off with a 1080p monitor.
