You know, the ones that have their own tab and aren't considered "important." Do you install them anyway? I never have and I'm wondering if I should.

    Depends on what's listed there.

If it's something that you want installed, yes. If it's something you don't want installed, no.

I wouldn't install them simply because you wanted them...LOL.... And, yes I install a majority of them.

It was more of a roundabout way of saying just filter through them and install what you deem necessary :D

That's the problem. Usually the information they give is really vague, and I don't really have time to research 10+ individual updates.

Usually I do but it depends. I dont care much for Windows Live updates as I dont use it other than what is required to play a game (cant save a game in Bioshock 2 without it). I didnt install the latest update for Silverlight either. Anything that has to do with MSE definitions or anything else security related, I do.

Most of the optional ones are pretty self-explanatory:
    Live Essentials
    Language packs
    Silverlight
    etc

You'll know it if you need it.

That's the approach I take to it.

That's one of the best parts. I installed it on an old pc that I didn't want to dig up new drivers for and win7 went and found fairly new ones (with in 4 months of the data I installed win 7). It was great didn't have to look for any drivers to get my stuff to work.

Some of them, yes, like the language packs, no. Waste of bandwidth and time for the language packs.

I normally install all of their hardware updates except the video drivers. A lot of the older ATI drivers seem to crash after updates. Or at least that has been my unlucky experience on many old cards. I have also had a cupple nVidia cards do it too. So, I stick to the manufacturer drivers for those.

    Drivers never.

Reason being is if you are cutting edge driver install guy, you might eat an old driver install.

What I do, is if it prompts me and says a driver is available. I go to the mfg'ers website, or my normal sources for driver updates, and verify / check to see latest driver information, and then download it there if I so choose.

Otherwise, its a hit or miss basis depending upon the update/product

Always do unless it's the Windows Search or Live Essentials (when I don't want it) or hardware drivers (in XP. In 7 I usually let it get them for me unless I know I already have better drivers.)

I only update if it is something I deem important or want. I never add stuff that affects things I do not have or care about.
