Do I need to do anything with new microsd card?

I just received my new Samsung Evo 64g microsd card.

Do I need to do anything to it first, format it etc or can I just put it right into my phone?

Does anyone put additional passwords or encryption on their microsd cards?

the phone can format it if that needs to be done.
otherwise no, nothing needs to be done.

and I have not put any security on the card itself (can you?) or encrypt it.
I don't think I even have anything stored on it, except maybe a few pictures.
