My client has the following system:

Via Samuel 2: 751Mhz Processor
188Mb RAM pc100 or 133 (Im not sure)
Sis 630 Motherboard
Windows XP SP2

The problem is that the PC is rather slow. Downloading virus update and checking for spyware at the same time is impossible. I know 751mhz might be an old processor but it shouldnt be that slow so my guess is that more memory would help a lot. Maybe a stick 256mb of pc133 would help a lot.

What do you think?

thats very low for the old processor and running windows xp, up the ram for sure ;)

By the way the paging file use is 221MB right now with IE open, avast antivirus, and spybot checking for spyware.
CPU use is 100%.

512mb/512mb+ would be alot better.

More memory would help, but considering you can get a system easily several times as fast for less than $500, you should probably look into a new machine.

Thanks but the computer is only used for word, excel and outlook. Nothing more. A new machine would be way an overkill.

I'm planning to buy a 256MB pc133 stick, do you think that would help? But I would have to take out one 64Mb pc100 stick, because there are only two banks. So at the end there would be a great total of 384MB of PC133 RAM.

In that case, buy two, if you can.

Do you have a fry's near you? You'd be surprised at how much a computer could cost. You could probably build a better system for under $150AR. Where's that thread about super cheap system builds...

Here it is: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1159753
My bad, its $185AR, hehe. You could also go used, and still get a better system for under $100, me thinks.

I live in Mexico so... here there is no such thing as super cheap system builds.

I think I'll buy two sticks of 256mb ram for $50 dollars (500 pesos).

You'll definitely notice a major performance increase with 512MB Ram.

Have fun.

Get some external memory aswell, just in case the PC crashes, at least you'll have important files saved seperately. Check out www.looop.biz, they've got some External hard drives.

Yes, more memory is needed there. 512mb would be the sweet spot for that setup.
