Disassemble rack enclosure

Hello all,

Is it possible to disassemble most rack enclosures, such as the ones from IBM/HP/DELL/etc? Or would it be a saw job?

Most racks are bolted together. Look closely at it or bust out a sawzall.

Some yes, some no.

I have seen HP racks that were welded together, others bolted.

Basically there's two options - drill out rivets and disassemble; or, get out the gloves, and eye and ear protection with a Sawzall.

All of the 42U Dell and HP racks I have dealt with showed up already assembled. Most of the stuff like the sides, rails, PDUs, etc will come off or out with simple hand tools. The core structure may require destructive methods. Once you take all of the other stuff off, the core skeleton should be fairly easy to move without needing to take all the way apart.
