The ones with magazines...they don't seem more expensive than the single tape units...at least on ebay...

The disadvantage is more moving parts. I have an Exabyte 8mm autoloader, 8mm single tape drive, and a HP 4mm dds-2.

But it was the 4mm dds that crapped out. Time to get a new one. oh well you never know. Use it properly keep it clean and it should be fine.

If you have a need for an autoloader get one. If not stick with a single drive unit.

AutoLoaders allow for easier backup when you want to do differentials or other things like that .

I got a dds3 autoloader a couple years ago here where I work at. It was a godsend for me, as I always forgot to swap out the tapes everyday. Basically if you need one, get it. The only problem I had with mine was once it was not reading any tapes, and I got a new one the next day after an rma call. I'm using an HP 24x6e.

PS - Arcserve sucks!
