Michigan residents have been authorized to swap their static plates for electronic ones, as lawmakers have passed a bill enabling digital license plate technology in the state. The only option thus far is Reviver Auto’s Rplate, “the world’s first and only digital license plate.” While some question their necessity, the company argues the platform can “simplify daily life” in a variety of ways.

The Rplate’s connected car platform can automate vehicle renewals, replacing legacy stickers with digital decals, and add new levels of personalization to the license plate, including promoting charitable causes, passion for a sports team, or even a child’s academic/athletic achievements. The Rplate also enables stolen vehicle and plate detached information, as well as geo-fencing capabilities for business and/or governmental entities. Future features include Amber and weather alerts, automated parking, trips taken, vehicle miles traveled, marketing capabilities and much more.

Those things are expensive and completely unnecessary. But sure, I need to see how well someone's child is doing in high-def. If anything this is distracting at night.

It would be great if you needed to get right up to reach around range to read it.

Like just about all bumper stickers.

I'm all for going digital. I would like it if we didn't have cash and receipts weren't on paper. All my billing and personal finances at home are almost completely digital.

But why in the name of god and all that is holy does this exist?

This is just digital because they can,not because they should. End of the day, you still have a plate.

I'm curious what their justification for value is. It takes approximately 1minute to open a registration mailer, peal, and place the tag on the plate. You do this once per year.

So is the increased complexity, price, and troubleshooting if it stops working going to really save me that 1 minute?

A metal plate doesn't stop working. It's cheaply made and outside of custom, it's usually free.

Not a fan due to the tracking. Nobody needs info on trips taken, miles traveled, I already have an odometer. And No to marketing. Seriously

Don't have a modern vehicle? Don't have a Cell Phone? Are you Amish? Because those first two things alone already track you whether you think it does or tells you it doesn't, it does. If you're car has wifi and LTE info service or gps maps, you're already tracked. Unless you are an Eraser Specialist with hidden identity living off the grid with no bank account, no electricity or gas service, you can be tracked.

And welcome to a '68 El Camino.....

Michigan plates are currently made by inmates at the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility. Are they gonna be the next group to stand up and yell "dey terk er jerbs!"?

Ok cool, yeah I'll take one. Wait I gotta pay $799...

Do tell?!
And once legalized weed dispensaries open up under new law this December, an additional 500+Million revenue stream coming in.

State is still broke though. Look into all the sketch shit DNR does for money.
Just more money for the state to waste on things besides fixing the shitty roads.
Yeah, this storm hit today and I’m dreading the drive home. The drive in to work this morning was bad enough with Michigan plows doing the discount double check have fun with your single lane of 2 inch snow vs 4 inch snow.

On topic, fuck this. I don’t think any one was pulling for digital plates. I sure wasn’t.

Michiganger here, I'm glad we have the ability, but yea too expensive.

marketing capabilities

The only thing I thought of. This is all it's going to be pushed for. Show you ads and collect even more useless mass data at everyones expense to then sell to suckers who think big data is the pot of gold in marketing.

Depends how easy they are to program, and whether or not removing the GPS function disables them. Crossing a bridge that cost $7 a day if you could hack your plate to change right as you get to the toll taker station so it scans say your neighbors plate then hell it could pay for itself in less than half a year :D

Until I can get one that scrolls "QUIT RIDING MY ASS!" I won't care for one. :D

Here in California they are already complaining about how the weed tax collection rates are way below what was expected.
Due to the high tax rates and other expensive regulations, many people are sticking with the much cheaper illegal stuff.
