Diablo Immortal PC Build

I'm enjoying it for what it is. It's easy to pick up and play, the combat feels surprisingly good for a mobile game, I'm enjoying the story, etc. Some of the new monster and boss designs are awesome, btw. There are a lot of things that can be improved, mostly regarding the PC port itself where we need info on mousing over and other things mentioned already. I'm having a lot of inconsistent sound issues as well, particularly dialogue from main quest stories not playing for a few rounds of the dialogue then it comes back in.

I spent $15 to get the battle pass and I don't expect spend anything else. I don't care about any type of competitive bullshit. That's just not what ARPGs are to me.

They already suckered you in, then. The first 30-35 levels will feel like any other Diablo game, maybe with the progression a little too fast. Then you will start to have your progression slowly gated more and more using psychological tricks to get you to spend increasing amounts of money.

I think Rhykker has a pretty good take on it and has the same mindset as me. I'll enjoy the game until that paywall rears it's ugly head then I'll wash my hands of it. Really you shouldn't be hitting a paywall until endgame.

It Costs $110,000 to Fully Gear-Up in Diablo Immortal

"A YouTuber calculates how much it costs to max out a character's Legendary Gems in Diablo Immortal, and the final number goes beyond six figures."

"As of right now, F2P players cannot earn top-rated Legendary Games, which are only available via some of the game's monetization options, and fully maxing-out a character effectively costs $110,000 in the game's current economy." (full article)

I’d be real interested to know the first months sales numbers. I can’t imagine most pc players would drop money on this.

Most don't.

An old article, but in 2014, it was roughly 0.15% of players who composed 50% of the revenue. And it's about 20% of players who compose 90% of the revenue. This is just mobile games in general, though probably it's going to be the same with Immortal. But it's Asia, where this is commonplace, where the real money will start to be made. What I see happening is companies trying to move the Asian model to the west. Because it makes money.

And the scary thing is, the anchoring bias. Remember Oblivion's Horse Armor controversy? Bethesda was considered a horrible company for releasing just a skin. And now you have people today more than willing to accept cosmetic DLC as perfectly acceptable. And that's what's going to happen here too. What we're seeing is the evolution of games. Without government intervention, yes, we're going to end up with pretty much every AAA company game being a fancy slot machine. Because that's what makes the most money.

Well tbh you wouldn't need government intervention if people would simply not reward crappy game development with even a download....but I guess that ship has sailed off a long time ago.

Let's be honest for a second. What we're seeing is legalized gambling, in all but a small technicality of the official legal definition. And gambling is part of basic human psychology. It's not like that ship sailed a long time ago. It never existed.

The gambling industry makes far more money than the video game industry. The combined worldwide market for the entire video game industry is about $180 billion. Gambling is a half trillion dollar industry.

Even Diablo itself is really nothing more than a slot machine, and I'm not talking Immortal here, just the game itself. You kill monsters to get random loot, and you hope to get better, "winning" loot.

And people have been talking about a few videos that came out the past couple of days of streamers losing to whales. Diablo itself was never about skill, despite people claiming these streamers had skill. You don't need skill to place high on the Diablo 2 ladders or the Diablo 3 leaderboards. You place there just by putting in more time than other players. Time is money. And time is what professional streamers have. They can afford to play 10+ hours a day. Do some of them know the game? Of course. But people confuse the fact that they can play significantly longer, thus place high up on the leaderboards, with them being the most skilled players, and this just isn't true. What we're seeing now is just the next evolution, of allowing people with money, to buy time. The reality is, they're no different than the streamers. It's just that Immortal is opening up an alternative way for wealthy individuals to buy the time they'd never have with previous games.

Nah, I'm level 45, still doing just fine. Also hard to be suckered in when I have no interest in keeping up with anyone or playing against other players.

I've also already been down this road with Wargaming and World of Warships. By no means is that game as outright aggressive and predatory (though World of Tanks is far, far worse than ships in that regard) and I supported it when I thought it was a game worth supporting. I'm not concerned at all about supporting Immortal other than playing the story and dicking around for a bit because I do find it to be enjoyable but predatory, as expected.

This is this equivalent to a dude admitting to his buddies that he's dating a crazy stripper with kids and an ex that is getting out of jail soon and saying "it's cool guys, I know what I'm doing".

Bingo, I'm at level 49-50 playing solo and have no intention of paying a dime. Its fun and enjoyable as it is. The P2W is not shoved in your face like other games. If it gets to the point of too much of a grind I'll just quit. Its free on pc so why not?

Have you had times when your player just stops allowing you to do damage? Like for a minute or two? That is the only wtf thing I've seen, especially in timed rifts!

Would you consider that a better reaction than the rampant horseshit surrounding the incredibly uptight and unable to just have fun crowd that thinks the game is unplayable?

It's a free to play game and I'm not interested in much beyond the story and some dungeon action. If I was I'd still be hesitant.

All that to say no one has to justify why they play or purchase something to anyone here. We don't need multiple Diablo threads being derailed because people can do nothing but complain and shit on the people who do enjoy it.

Yes, I've had this issue where I lose most or all control of my character for a moment and it has happened quite a bit. I'm using KBM and not a controller for the game. Various audio issues as well, particularly when alt-tabbing

Fair enough, we prolly should create a separate bitching thread and leave this one for folks talking about the game.

Streamer would do stupid crap like that. The bigger streamers make so much money that dropping $100k on P2W mechanics is worth it for the "content". The biggest streamers are the worst. I do t understand how people throw so much money at them instead of some deserving smaller streamer you might like. I also notice the big streamers like to run max amount of ads on twitch. Literally 8 ads every 30 mins.

Oh boy do I remember..I remember saying on these very forums, "This is the start of something bad.." and was told I was over reacting, etc. I'll see if I can find the post. It was from 2006-07.

Installed, tried for 10 minutes, uninstalled. There's literally no reason to play this if you already have Diablo 3. Unless you want worse graphics, bad UI, and dumbed-down D3 playstyle.

The big streamers are part of the problem here. Publicity is publicity. It doesn't matter if it's good or bad. And they're going to be used by the company, whether they're paid shills or just useful idiots.

You'll probably notice companies with F2P games tend to promote a F2P streamer, and preferably one of the more skillful streamers. This serves the purpose of making players believe that they too can compete in F2P games, as they'll only see a F2P streamer placing high on the leaderboards, without recognizing that the streamer is putting in 10+ hours a day, which most people just can't.

Second, not everyone is against P2W. They'll see the streamers pay money and get gear, and guess what? They'll do that too.

Third, most likely the streamers will be heavily praising the game at the beginning. P2W doesn't matter as much day one or day two. The goal here is to get people playing. Because it's not about if you complain or not. It's about if you play. I'll freely admit, I've gambled, and I've probably gambled far more than I should have. And one thing I've noticed at my time in casinos is very similar to my time playing MMOs. I've lost track of how many people hate gambling yet are at a casino yet again, or hate playing World of Warcraft, but log on every day. You see addicts in both situations who are there against their will. And sadly, it's not as easy to take the responsibility they need to quit.

It's not about your talk. It's your actions that speak.

I don't think you know what you are talking about. The graphics are better than D3. You should try something other than low settings. The play style is the same as D3 and there are more activities to do. And you can't do jack shit in 10 minutes. Its fun and something to do until D4 comes out. These loot based grind games are all the same sooooo....

Not trying to dump on you but its FREE on pc, Don't like it that's fine but give it a fair shot...or not, its all good!

I am not giving a game a pass because it is free. Trash game is trash.

That's a fair criticism, and it's very possible that I didn't check the settings properly. My initial impression just didn't feel like it warranted any more time.

My only check-in in terms of paying money and loot mechanics etc is: I think it's time we got mobile games to the place of being treated like desktop games, especially if they are designed as a content-type game and not a time waster "mini game". (this game even has a desktop variant... obviously).
There is no reason in my mind why they couldn't just set the price at $20, and give full access to all content - content currently placed behind a paywall (eg: can't get all gems without paying money).
However it's obvious Blizzard won't do that and are resistant to that, precisely because getting 1000 whales will pay them out many times over what getting 100,000 people to pay $20 will. And that's also not even considering millions of other users that will pay $.99-$15 on micro transactions every few months.
It's obvious that it's predatory and terrible, however that aspect has been beaten to death, so I won't belabor that again.

At $20/piece, you'd be talking maybe 5 whales. I'm surprised at the underestimation of how much some are willing to spend. We're talking 7 figures here for the top spenders. By the time you get to the 1000th whale, you're still talking in the tens of thousands of dollars spent.

As I've stated earlier, it's the evolution of gaming for large companies where growth is desired. In the 1980s, 100k copies sold was considered extremely good. Then it became a million copies. But you had bean counters who saw that if you just catered to the top 1%, you could make more money on just them than the other 99% combined. 0.15% brings in half the revenue of the mobile game industry. Until someone figures how to bring in more, to continue growth for shareholders, this will be the norm for many big game companies.

Yes... that was my point. Not sure if I'm supposed to sarcastically post r/whoooosh here or not. There is no debate here that this micro-transaction model is obviously all about making more money while not caring about the entire player base.

Right, well up to and until the point that either the masses are sick of it and/or there is some form of legislation done. Back in the Blizzard old days where it was a company that was much more for gamers by gamers (read: before the Activision 'merger') I don't think Blizzard would be caught dead doing these practices. They would take 10 years to make a game, then support said games for 10 years, for free. Maybe release an expansion pack that would be full of actual content - and then proceed to support that for 10+ years. In other words they held themselves to high, self-imposed, standards. And also arguably moral/ethical standards as well.

Current 'Blizzard' (which really isn't Blizzard, all the people that made Blizzard, Blizzard are gone) is all about money and expansion. Anyway, I hope people get wise to this and/or the government steps in. For me the 'real' issue is that this just makes for bad games. This can't be qualified as "fun". It's simply addictive to those that can't see past the psychological manipulation. What a waste.

I wish you haters would stop hijacking the thread and start your own so you can tell us more how people should have fun, and if they don't agree have the government step in and tell them they are doing it wrong so they can legislate it out.

While this is a funny analogy, I gotta disagree, lol. Plenty of people can and routinely do control or limit themselves with regards to gambling. The guy you’re describing seems to be on the extreme opposite end of that spectrum. 😛
