They've been $199 for a while at Microcenter. I've been thinking about picking one up to play with, although I already have a Nexus 7 and a Surface Pro. Are they any good?
 
I like mine. I would say it's very much like a Nexus in terms of price and performance, but with a full desktop OS instead. If you already have a Surface I think you will be disappointed, unless you are aware of its limitations and are using it for another purpose.

For $200, you get a handheld Windows computer, which is hard to beat. It also comes with a Home + Student version of Office 2013.
 
Price is likely going to fluctuate as different vendors are shown. That's why it's not showing @ the $205 price right now.

They aren't bad. Depends on your needs. Decent battery and handles the web and office well enough.

I went with the 64GB version for $249 at Microcenter altho, I think I would have been just as happy with the cheaper $199 32GB version as well. After installing Office and a few other programs I was worried I wouldn't have much space left.

My local MC has a few open box units for $159. My question is how does it support apps? Is it literally a windows machine so your typical play store apps don't work? Does it run like BigFish games and things like that? I have ZERO experience with windows tablets or phones or anything.

In the end I think it will just end up being something used to watch movies on an airplane instead of my laptop and browse reddit and HF and stuff from the couch but a few games would be nice. :-D

It's Windows 8.1, not Windows RT. So, it's a full desktop version of Windows. You don't use "apps", you install/run these things called "programs" ;)

It has a microsd slot, so throw a 64 or 128 card in there, download VLC player, and there you go. Or, just map a local share when you're at home and stream away.

If it was my money I'd hold out for a Nexus 8 coming in a few months. I dont need a power sucking "full desktop OS" on a small screened tablet. In this form factor I want simplicity, wide variety of apps suited for the form factor (small screen touch), and for the battery to last a long time.

I've have a Dell Venue 8 Pro for 4 months now, very nice tablet. The big point for me is the pen and using it with OneNote. The original pens had a lot of quality issues, some got lucky like me and got a good one and I don't have big issues with it, it actually works quite well for handwriting purposes though it's still not as good as Wacom pens as on the Surface Pro and Pro 2. There's a new batch of redesigned pens on the way that should be out at the end of the month if you're into digital ink.

I get about 8 to 10 hours of constant use doing normal things like watching video, web surfing, inking in OneNote, that sort of stuff. At these prices with what these 8" Windows tablets can do, they are very competitive. The biggest weakness is a relative lack of touch apps but that is often mitigated because of the Windows desktop or being able to use a Flash site that isn't normally the case with Android or iOS.

I've ran Left 4 Dead on it. That's not what I use it for but I was curious. Things are going to get very interesting with Bay Trail and 4/8GB ram 64/128GB ssd tablets.

There are a lot of YouTube videos demoing the V8P running an assortment of desktop games. Those should give you a pretty good idea of the performance level of this tablet for that purpose. In general at lowest settings, Source games seem to run pretty well on this device. And there is a nice 3rd party add on called GestureWorks that adds a touch overlay to a number of desktop games, including: L4D2 https://gameplay.gestureworks.com/

Not great, but playable. As far as video games, I use it as an emulator. There are Win 8 versions of NES, SNES, Genesis, and a few other emulators with touchscreen controls. I also have a mini (micro?) USB to USB female adapter than I can plug my wired xbox 360 controller into, or a keyboard, mouse, usb hub, etc. Every 8 and 16 bit game ever made in the palm of your hands!.
 
Amazon is now showing this as $206 for me, with free shipping. Earlier in the day it was around $230.
 
Its $200 on NE now. Bough my from amazon and can't cancel it. Stupid tax on amazon.
 
I saw the Kansas City Microcenter had 4 open box tablets for $159 and decided to give it a try. Turns out none of them had chargers so they dropped the price to $129.99 for me. Not a bad deal. Plus I have plenty of extra chargers laying around.

Sweet deal. Just a word of caution with a charger for the V8P. It needs to be capable of 2A/10W or the device probably won't charge.

I've been using the plug in for my old TF300T and it seems to work fine. It also took a charge with one of my Nexus 7 chargers, I think for the FHD one which is 1.35A and it charged pretty quickly. Is there any harm in charging it with a lower amperage charger?
