The 3 panels I received were all Mexico Rev 00 pantels. All showed uniformity and backlighting issues.

It is very disappointing that there are so many issues/potential issues with the U3011, as I was looking forward to purchasing one.

Due to the numerous posts in this forum and based on several reviews that I have read I am probably going to go with the U2711 instead.

Keep in mind that the people here are probably pickier than most.

I did exactly what was recommended (put 100% grey screen up and look for differences in brightness across screen. If I really focus, I can just barely tell that there might be a difference in brightness from left to right, but it is so subtle I could be imagining it.

In normal use it is not noticeable at all.

My only complaint are the less than true blacks towards the edges of the screen, but we all know that is a known limitation of IPS panels, and will affect every IPS panel out there...

I have considered that fact. Several Internet reviews note the issues with uniformity on the U3011, in addition to its poor contrast. By comparison, the U2711 has nearly the same resolution, exhibits none (or little) of the uniformity issues, has slightly better contrast and has the added benefit of being cheaper than the U3011. I am aware that contrast isn't a strong suit for IPS displays.

When I really think about it, the only things the U3011 has going for it over the U2711 is the 16:10 resolution (160 pixels in height) and that it is 3" bigger.

I haven't made a final decision yet, but it looks like the U2711 is the better pick for me, as I am upgrading from the 2709W 27" LCD.

I too have come from dell 2709w.
The U3011 is a massive step up from the 2709w.
Also, I have the U2711 and U3011 side by side.
The U3011 looks much bigger and I like the slightly bigger text.
The U2711 is a great monitor but the U3011 is greater.
I would get the U3011 over the U2711 anytime.
The price difference is justified.

Dell has a pretty robust return program from what I've read on this forum. One guy mentioned that he returned his U3011 22 times before he found the "right one". I have not returned mine, but apparently you ask for a replacement, they ship it to you, then after you receive your new one, you send your old one back at their expense....Ok this is what I'm getting at, buy the U3011, if you can afford it, and simply replace it, within 21 days otherwhise you will get a refurbished model/or pay restocking fees for a refund, with a U2711. Then again you may not want to go through all the trouble. I sure dont. Besides I really like my U3011.

Thanks for the recommendations. Still, I'm leaning toward the U2711 especially since I won't have as much $ for my PC upgrade as I expected. The U2711 has gone for as low as $720 while the lowest I have seen the U3011 is $1060. The $300+ difference is a big deal in terms of what components I will be able to buy for my PC upgrade.

Then again, I need to wait for those prices to come back. Arg! Plus, I am still gunshy over the fact that several users have had to exchange their U3011 monitors over similar issues, some multiple times.

I am a picky person and really don't know if I want to deal with possible U3011 defects.

if the u3011 ever hits below $1100...i'm all over it.

I agree. At first this uniformity issue annoyed me but then I realized that I spent 95% striving for perfection with this piece of technology and only 5% enjoying its amazing benefits and IQ. I have now switched that ratio around. This is a beautiful monitor...enjoy it and don't worry so much about nitpicking the little things.

As a caveat: my uniformity issue is only very slightly noticeable on a white/light background. If your uniformity is severely out of control, I would request a replacement.

Is the anti glare coating on the u3011 more, less, the same "sparkle" as the u2711?

Silly boy, get 3 x 30"rs and put them in portrait. 3 times the cost, 3 times the desktop space, and 3 times the less sense. So do 5 of them actually.

and...

1. Deal with all of the issues with getting games to work properly with said triple monitor setup.
2. Be forced to use a SLI solution if you're going the NVIDIA route like I am.

I don't own one, but from some of the posts here it looks like it is the same or slightly worse. It seems to be a characteristic of IPS displays and the anti-glare coating that Dell uses.

How does the u3011 compare to the 3007wfp-hc? (I'm thinking of upgrading)

I have both, my 3007wfthc is my other monitor in my dual monitor setup... everything is better, from color (do not have that red issue I had with my 3007hc anymore), OSD rules... the only thing I miss is my CF reader :(

Contract, color, etc is improved...

I was looking for a 3007 again but found a U2711 recertified. I really like the U2711 so much that now I see a 3007 up for sale, I don't want it. The colors and connectivity options of the new Ultrasharp models are much better. I'll wait to buy a U3011 instead. Recertifiecd Dell Monitors problems have been corrected and restored better than new monitors sometimes. I had a choice between a U2711 A00 new and a U2711 A03 recertified. I went with the recert. and received a perfect panel with the newest firmware. A good way to know you're receiving a perfect panel from Dell that is recertified/refurbished, a grade will be printed on the label. A is perfect, B has minor panel issues, C is bad. Dell or another company/person that wants to sell you a recrt/refurb monitor, make sure to ask for an A grade monitor.

I was wondering if you could tell us where your U3011 was built? Only if you do not mind of course. Mine was built in china rev00 and it has some uniformity issues only noticeable in an all black blackground and a pitch black room, but here is the wasteland...No uniformity issues in game.

Oh I don't mind at all. Mine was assembled in Mexico. Muy bueno, except for the dead pixel(s?) that I've decided to live with because in all honesty, due to the location and the fact that the panel is so large, I don't even notice such a minor defect unless I am looking for it and I don't want to risk getting an inferior panel. Very happy with the U3011 so far!

lol return a monitor 22 times to get a "good" one?

Rediculous. Seriously. It's called an Eizo. Pony up the cash and buy one.

I really don't think were picky as we think we are, were just cheap.

WTB: 3007-WFP :(

Still sitting here looking at my U3011... I've determined that I hate IPS panels.

30" IPS panels have always had just about the worse uniformity problems of any computer monitor. I doubt the 3007-wfp would be any better.

Other than on a very light background, my U3011 does not have any uniformity issues. Is your problem apparent on all backgrounds in all use scenarios?

My 3007-HC uniformity issues were apparent most of the time, until I sent it back and gave up on 30" panels.

We are looking at the convergence of two things, variability in how bad uniformity issues are and variability in how much users are annoyed by uniformity issues. This accounts for some being happy with their first monitor and others exchanging them until they give up.

But overall given all the reports, uniformity is worse on these panels than any others.

I've had my Dell U3011 for about a month now and absolutely love it. Gaming is fantastice on it too. I just loaded up Batman AA GOTY edition lastnight and was completely blown away.

Right on man. If ever return mine, which I doubt, I'll be looking for one built in México. My wife and I truly love our display. We purchased the 5 year warranty with it so if it dies we'll be covered.

Right on their outlet monitor page. It's a new policy, surely not a pleasant one.

Blue Rays look amazing on my U3011 and I agree with the assesment the guys over at www.flatpanelshd.com made about the scaler with regards to the PS3.

"The picture quality is pretty good although the scaling from the PS3 resolution to Dell U3011’s 2560x1600 makes the picture appear a bit softer – only visible from a close distance. The gaming experience was good and I saw no distracting trailing or blurring on fast motion. Input lag, when connected to a gaming console, was decent as well but not perfect."

Wish the warranty was longer on the refurbs, looks like a pretty good deal, id be a hit if you manage to land a low milage model, If your going refurb I think now would be the time rather than later because the model has not being out for as long.
I wonder what criteria they have when they sell them as refurbs. Would they have scratches on the screen itself, or if there was anything it would be on the frame. I know verizon phones have refurbs that are almost good as new. I'm tempted to go for one of these refurbs deal.

Anyone had experience purchasing a u3011 refurb? How was the condition? was it worth it?
Whats the cheapest anyone seen a new u3011 go for sale about?

Shift in discussion if I may. Just got my U3011 today, and am very impressed with it, and am fortunate to have no complaints (Mexico build).

I had spoken to Tech Support at X-Rite a few weeks ago, and they had assured me that my i1 Display 2 colorimeter will work correctly with this monitor. Before I try to calibrate it, I have some rudimentary questions.

I've got the monitor set to the sRGB Preset Mode. My understanding is that if I create a monitor profile with the i1D2 from here, then that profile will apply to the sRGB Preset Mode. And I will not have to set it up in Custom Color Mode. Is my understanding right?

In the past, with the i1D2, I've only ever used the "Easy" calibration mode. I suspect that I'll want to run it in "Advanced" mode, so I'd like to check on the appropriate parameters. Is 6,500K, 100 cd/m2, and 2.2 Gamma the right set of parameters to use?

I always use 6500K, 120 cd/m2 and 2.2 Gamma. I also use Custom Color mode to fine tune the color settings.

After careful consideration I'm going with one of the U3011 refurbs myself over the U2711. 16:10 FTW.
