Dell U2412M

Oh I agree, I'm quite happy with mine... I live in Puerto Rico, you'd have to pay me to put blinds on the windows. :p

Being from OH and without a U2412m at the moment... I am jealous of both your sunshine, and your U2412m :D Good day, sir!

So did you try going into the monitor's OSD/menu and perform an auto-adjust? If so, and the problem persists try a digital source like DVI, or even an HDMI device with HDMI to DVI cable and see if the problem is there. This should help isolate whether the issue is monitor based. Also, try a different VGA cable if you can. You never know, maybe the Dell one is bad.

I will try to connect it with a MBP using mini display port to DVI see if it turns better. Report later.

Thanks 10e!

I got my U2412M in yesterday and was very excited to open it up :)

-The screen rotation feature is nice, but when you rotate the screen to be horizontal, it isn't exactly horizontal - it's ever so slightly tilted (1 degree), but it's noticeable if you have any straight lines on your desk or walls.

i got the same issue, i wonder if everyone who have the monitor have same issue ?
i know 1degree wont be matter for most people
but if anyone else (that own the monitor) dont have same issue, i am thinking to get replacement for current one, well maybe only stand that need replacement

so hope other owner can tell me how their monitor stand, whether the monitor exactly horizontal or not

thanks in advance!

The flickering disappeared when I use MBP using mini display port + convert + dvi.

But still I don't know why the color and words in the laptop always better/ brighter/ clearer than the monitor... any idea?

Laptop screens always have a higher PPI (pixels per inch). I just bought my first laptop (ever ha) and with a 15.6 1080p screen I see that as well.

You may want to play with the brightness controls a bit and try different color presets. I always liked the 5700K custom color preset because it gives a bit more warmth to the whites.

I guess my first question would be, is the laptop a glossy laptop? Newer MBP are all glossy from what I've seen.

Right now Newegg has a coupon code- EMCNFJG43 that makes this about $305 shipped before any taxes. Does this monitor have the same warranty throught Newegg as it does through Dell? I would think so, but Dell has you click past some screens before you pick the default 3 year warranty. The [H] commision link is here. Just do search from there for item N82E16824260047

Im not sure if Newegg links you post automatically credit [H] so I figured I would do my part for the forum. ;)

You definitely get the 3 year limited warranty but I am curious as to whether you get the Advanced-RMA as well?

I'm sure it does but I would just like some clarification before I make the purchase, this is the best price I have seen in a while.

by the way, i performed the auto-adjust. It wouldn't help with the flickering..

what is 5700k custom color preset? and how can i get that?

yeah the MBP has the glossy screen ,,,

Wow, that's the best deal I have seen on this display in awhile. Also, I don't think Newegg charges sales tax do they? If that is the case, then they have Dell beat as Dell will charge tax as well as shipping. I might just finally cave and pick one of these up.

Newegg only charges tax in CA AFAIK.

The U2412M has been down to $300 once or twice in the past eight months, most of the time it's been $320-ish I think tho. I got two of them last year from Dell for $300 + tax with free shipping. I think Dell Latin America runs different prices/offers at times than Dell US tho.

That's what I thought Impulse, but I couldn't remember, since it has been so long since I have ordered from Newegg. At $305, it definitely beats Dell then. With Dell, I would have, roughly, an additional $20 in tax, plus the shipping charge. IPS here I come!!! :D

Typing this post on my 2408WFP now :(

My U2412M was a candle in the wind.

Bought it 2.5 months ago, rev A02, made in December 2011 in China.

Yesterday, when I turned it on, the blue LED came on and it showed the Dell splash screen for a few seconds, then the screen went black and the LED turned off. A few seconds later, the splash screen and LED came back, and then turned off, and it kept alternating. Tried it with two computers and three different cables, no luck. Without any video cables connected it would show the "No cable, turning off in 5 minutes" screen, but as soon as I connected a video cable, it went to turning on and off.

Called Dell, first tech support guy told me that if it showed the "No cable, turning off in 5 minutes screen", then the monitor was working perfectly and it was my computer. I told him that I had tried two computers, and he put me on hold for a minute, then transferred me to "senior tech support". The lady there asked for all my info again and what my problem was (Why don't they have some system where the first tech can log my info and the troubleshooting steps we took when they transfer my call?) and after going through the same troubleshooting steps a second time and telling me that the monitor was fine and my computer was broken ("Well, if my computer is broken, then the 2408WFP I have right next to must have magical powers, because I can look at the display on the 2408WFP, disconnect the cable and plug it into the U2412M and it doesn't work, then disconnect the cable and plug it back into the 2408WFP and it works fine"). Finally after a grand total of 26 minutes on the phone with Dell, they agreed to ship me out a replacement monitor.

How is their monitor replacement service? Should I be expecting a brand new monitor, or a refurb? Will I get the same or newer rev as the one I have now, or might I get an old A00 that they fixed? I was very happy with the backlight on my old one, and I had no dead pixels, so I'll be pretty pissed if I get one with crappy backlight bleed or dead pixels or one that's not in perfect condition. If that does happen, can I keep demanding new ones until I get one without dead pixels or blb?

They do i live on Brasil 2410 is around +1000USD$ here 2412 dosent exist yet.

Do you guys think i should go for the 2312hm/2420t(BenQ) or wait for the 2412M to get here?
i will use it for gaming+some movies/3D moddeling/photoshop

ok guys
after reading the whole page, i found out that to fix the stand is just by untighten the 4 screws on the stand and readjust it

now i have last minor issue
when i am viewing dark gray (i am using deadpixeltester/DPT from dps.uk.com)
i am seeing slight discoloration(i am its really slight), its like a dark band across the screen
coincidence or not, the band position is same on side usb port
well it really slight, and in normal usage i didnt see it
it visible if i am 1 feet back from my monitor

i wonder if this normal ? or i should ask for replacement ?
sorry i keep asking about my issue, i should ask dell directly, but i think they wont give me honest answer, as they will said its normal to save them from trouble
so i am hoping expert user like 10e willing to give me some advice regarding this

if u ask me, whether i am discomfort because of this, well in normal usage i wont even see but if something like this is not right/defect, of course i want to get replacement
because i think this is great monitor and i am thinking to use it for long time

thanks in advance

Well I sent in for an exchange, the monitor I have has a lot of backlight bleed (not IPS glow, although it has that of course). They sent me a new one, the backlight bleed is much better, but there's a very noticeable black mark (not a dead pixel or a row of them) you can see over every colour all the time. I can't clean it off, it's under the screen. It's like someone took a black felt pen and made a mark.

So I guess I have to try a third one now.

mine came in two hours ago and the color "white" does not look as white compared to the asus pa238q i have to the side. the u2412m white color seems just a little tad bit darker. is there something i can do to fix this? i found e10's settings to be the best.

edit: turned up constrast ratio to 85 and everythings perfect for me :)

question for aviat72

I have a 2407hc and very happy with it but really tempted to upgrade to a 2412m or 2410, what is the quality difference between the 2410 and 2407HC?

I know you don't have the 2412m but in your experience do you think it will be an improvement.

thanks

I dont have the 2412 but I had picked up a few Dell Refurb 2410 on Ebay,

Man those things are good.

I have a pair each of the 2407-HC, 2408 and 2410 in a six monitor matrix. The out of the box (factory default) performance of 2410 is simply amazing.

There is the HD wildlife video which comes with W7 in the Users->Public->Videos->Sample Videos area. I play that with half the video split on the 2410 and the other on the 2408/2407 and the depth of color makes the 2410 look so much sharper.

I never realized how much difference the amount of color depth could make in the viewing experience.

Also felt that even a refurb top of the line monitor will have enough quality control for it to be worth it. The seller had a ton to sell so very likely they were a large customer order cancelled which were then resold as refubs; their build date is in the third quarter of 2011.

Word of warning for those calling with an RMA - make sure you get a confirmation e-mail that your monitor is going out. Mine died on Saturday and a relatively mild phone experience got me a promise of one sent in 2-3 days. Contacted them again on Wednesday after nothing arrived, and after an hour on their webchat, found that the guys I talked to on Saturday never put in to send me a replacement. So if yours is dead and they agree to replace it but you don't receive a confirmation e-mail, they did not actually put it through. The jerk I talked to on Saturday even asked me for my address and gave me instructions for sending the old one back, and never put in the order to ship one to me. Watch out, guys.

Gonna replace my u2311h with one of these.. Should line up better with my 2001fp's. :)

Sorry you cant. The contrast on U2412M is poor.

Trolling for dollars again?

LoLed

Where's the proof?

TFTcentral measured it at average 1139:1 here: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2412m.htm

I measured it at 1100:1 or higher here:
u2412mcontrastratios.jpg

Flatpanelshd.com measured it at over 950:1 and Prad at 800:1 or higher

I think your post is poor.

If you guys cant get along, we can arrange for one or all of you to lose your access to displays.

I suggest you all read and understand the sticky posted at the top of this section

That's not impressive.

If you're going to try to show that the U2412m has poor contrast compared to a PVA panel (a bad comparison to begin with), at least go for the broke and show something like this.
41734.png

It seems your stance is that one of the best IPS in terms of contrast ratios has poor contrast compared to a PVA panel. No one disputes this. But you might as well say that a PVA panel has poor contrast compared to a CRT. Which it does. A CRT will beat a PVA by an even bigger margin than a PVA beats IPS, in contrast ratio terms.

But as far as IPS monitors go, the U2412m is one of the best.

thanks 10e
by the way, are you really a Dell Sales person?

If I were a Dell sales person I would inform the HardOCP web site admins or Kyle and you would see it in my title. To my knowledge, the only guy here that is a manufacturers' representative is Art Marshall (username ArtMarshall) for NEC, and he is a very helpful person.

My vocation is actually something that Dell does not even provide products for as it is in the telecommunications field.

Redbeard is a rep for Corsair as well, I believe.

There's half a dozen reps at least, Red isn't even the only Corsair rep... I think 10e might've been talking about reps specifically in the displays sub forum tho. ASUS has a rep floating around in here too (well, elsewhere on the boards, audio/mobo sections).

I got my replacement display today.

I noticed when set to the same settings as the old monitor it's off a bit, especially in terms of the colour grey, it seems a little lighter on the new monitor. Is this something to be concered about, or just that no two displays will calibrate the same?
