Dell U2412M $299

These are pretty much the best monitors possible for the money. I've purchased three of them for my home and office and they have all been flawless.

I absolutely love this monitor, bought one 6 months ago. great overall. If i had the desk space i would add a second one.

These are not so great for competitive FPS gaming, no? So how are these the best monitors for the money? Maybe for Eyeinfinity/surround (i don't know if you can do 120hz in multi monitor), but 60 hz monitors (i can't find anything saying these can do 120hz) aren't good for single monitor users right?

Contrary to popular belief, not all monitors are used for FPS gaming.

120hz isnt the only thing that makes a particular screen good ya know.

Wish I had money for one or more.

I got one of these a few months ago. It's been nothing short of amazing.

Once you go IPS, you never go back.

Thanks for this. Gave up on 27" monitor, but was having trouble swallowing US $400+ for 16:10 IPS. This is a great deal.

AG sparkle on the larger dot pitch of the 24" monitors is much easier to deal with than on the tight dot pitch of the 27" and 30" screens.

Once you go 120hz you never go back. IPS is nice but unless you need it for color matching-related work, it's got nothing on a 120hz monitor for gaming and overall smoothness of motion.

Imho it's all personal preference, but this thread is for a deal on the Dell U2412M :p

Trying to talk my wife into one, she'll get either my U2410 or 2407 for photo work and I'll get this for my center in Eyefinity.

These dell IPS panels are so overrated. I would go with the Samsung S23A700D, which can be had at tiger direct for $299. It has no anti-glare coating, 120hz refresh, 2ms response time, whites look pure and colors pop. Oh and it does 3d too and once you get the 3d settings dialed in correctly games like Mafia II are outrageous! All of those things the Dell panel can not do and it costs the same money

TN panel=6 bit colours. IPS=8 bit colours.
Wouldn't use anything other than an IPS for my main screen.

Agreed. Been using IPS since 2004, can't stand TN's.

120hz is nice I'm sure, but the picture looks dull and has all kinds of washing-out from viewing angles anyway on a TN, plus lack of depth due to lower color gamut/vibrancy. You're also stuck on 1920x1080 120hz rather than 2560x1600 (double the res) or having good picture quality with eyefinity/nv surround (IPS 1920x1080 60hz with 3x of this thread's deal).

Looks like garbage comparatively for PQ, I guess it can do 3d if you're into that but it'll look terrible for anything else.

My guess is that it can only be used so many times, and knowing this forum along with slickdeals and techbargains along with a few others and this probably won't last.

Ordered two.

I dont buy your argument one bit. I have owned three dell u2410s and I now own three samsung s27a750s. The colors look fantastic on these samsung 120hz panels and if you were really that picky about colors you would rock a FW900. Don't take this the wrong way cause Im not trying to flame, but I really know your full of it because the anti-glare coat on the dells completely ruins colors and white levels and ANY self respecting picture quality guru would not accept the horrid AG coat on the dells.

I respect you GT, I really do....been reading your posts for a while now and you seem to know your shit...but you are dead wrong here. Colors look awesome on the sammies, the viewing angle is very strong, and there is tons of depth..I was blown away when I replaced my three u2410s with three s27a750s.

My three sammies:

And yes it is possible to rotate the sammies in portrait even though they dont have vesa mounts:
Who needs a VESA mount when you can use a sexy water mount from Zephyrhills like I did?

The "custom" water mounts allow me to rotate my triple S27A750s right into portrait mode no problem!

I haven't seen many of the newer 120hz TN's in-person, so I stand corrected :). Thanks for the post. That's actually pretty impressive (and good to know).

Lack of VESA really kills those Samsung monitors for a lot of people. Think they'll put that panel in a monitor that has VESA mounts any time soon?

l88bastard, im loving those sammies. im waiting for my xhd3000 to die for good and im thinking i might pick up a set of those when it does. im pretty over the IPS thing. its nice, but not nearly as important to me for video and gaming (no photo editing etc) as size, resolution, and 120hz. those things look thin and light too! anything you dont like about them?

I owned one of the best IPS out there, the HP ZR30w, and every day I use the other best IPS, the Apple 27". Sweet for the real estate and required for color matching work, but there's honestly no IQ advantage over the newer good TN monitors unless you're viewing really off angle.

The Samsungs are nice but IIRC the main problem is that there's no 3DVision support. So for Nvidia users, you lose 3D.

I got one of these for around $320 and its the best monitor i have owned to date. Looks amazing right out of the box

Getting slightly off topic here, but I thought I'd answer this...

You don't lose 3D, you just can't use Nvidia's "3D Vision" driver.

Install the IZ3D driver, select the appropriate display and 3D glasses type, and you're ready to go.

Those are $80 more each sadly.

But the IZ3D solution is pretty subpar, I think AMD users would agree about that, as they use the TriDef solution whenever possible.

The key with 3D in games is being able to manually adjust depth and convergence, and without that feature, it's pretty useless.

What baffles me is how the hell Nvidia rolled out its "3D Vision 2". It was ridiculous of them to announce it with no other option than one buggy $700 monitor, and nothing else has been made available 6 months later.

I want this, but at the same time I want a 30" :)
Anyone @ same boat?

Grrr.... totally missed that this was a 6 bit panel. Son wants a new monitor anyway, so will probably sell it to him to avoid the minor hassle of returning a monitor. :/

Do you wan the phone number of my ex-girlfriend that put my XHD3000 into early retirement? Im sure her fists of fury could enhance yours too lmao.

I wish we could get higher pixel counts and of course I wish they handled motion as good as CRTs...other than that they are awesome.

News to me. NM, then. IPS does not inherently make the panel better - 8-bit does.

did you try baking the logic board? im sure that would make it all better. :D

good thing you dumped her ass. i got mine for free because it was broken, but man if my gf did that i would make her replace it or we'd be done. that was not a cheap monitor.

Have you ever used an IPS panel? I used to think TN panels were good enough, until I bought an UltraSharp. They really are worth the money, bar-none.
