I have a Dell 7740 with a i7-9850H, currently with 32GB DDR4 2666Mhz. I'm curious if I would be able to upgrade it to 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz.

Most Dell documentation seems to indicate that this would be possible.

But the memory controller is obviously on the CPU, and everything I've been able to find about the i7-9850H shows that it only supports 2666Mhz DDR4?

I am able to get the 3200Mhz modules basically for free so I might end up just trying it and seeing what happens, but I'd prefer to not simply waste my time if it's guaranteed not to work.

I don't think the 3200 is going to do anything for you. Even if it did anything, you wouldn't notice a change in performance, but I don't think 9th gen was made for 3200.

Yeah will most likely just come up as 2666. Get em and sell em whilse still worth something.

I literally already have the modules as they were given to me for free. Unfortunately you really have to dig into this laptop to swap out the RAM. One module is swapped from the bottom via removing the entire bottom panel, the other is swapped from the top via removing the keyboard. I know that the difference would be small, but if they actually ran at 3200, I think it would be worth it since I already have the modules. I really wish Dell hadn't listed 3200Mhz on their spec sheet as that's really what's making me think that there might be a chance, even though it seems to go against what the CPU itself supports. I'm still on the fence, but was hoping that maybe someone else had actually tried it.
