The Dell panel is 24"

The HP 23"

Please help me answer my question...

Both panels are 1920x1200 native.

1920/1200 = 1.6

1.6 = 16:10 Aspect Ratio

Will someone with the Dell and someone with the HP get a tape measure out and physically measure the viewable panel.

Take your width measurement and divide it by the height. (remember the actual panel...not the casing too...just viewable panel)

You should get exactly 1.6 if your panel is truely in a native 16:10 aspect ratio.

I am really curious if this is true since one panel claims 24" and the other 23"

Of course they are both 16:10, because they are both the same resolution. They can both be the same aspect ratio, it's just that the length and height of the 23" will be a little bit less. They use different panels so the pixels are differently spaced.

so what exactly is the op worrying about? one is 23in and one is 24in. both have same resolution, does that seem to be a problem? and yeah they are 16:10, so is that a problem?

yes it IS a problem. What if the actual viewable size of the screen is a little less than 16:10, but your native resolution is a true 16:10 (yet it is filling up the whole screen!). This means that the image is being distorted to fill the screen. (circles become ovals).

It would only be correct if both the physical screen and the resolution were both the same aspect ratio.

So okay, maybe the pixels are a different size...

Dell = 0.27mm

HP = 0.258mm

Hmm, maybe this explains it now.

I still would like someone to actually measure their screen.

And please do not tell mods to lock my threads because *you* are confused and think that I do not know what I am talking about. There was an article on Anandtech awhile back that talked about this very issue. There was also a thread on this very forum that talked about 17" and 19" LCDs and their native resolution/aspect ratios vs. their physical panel dimensions.

It is not a problem. Anandtech was wrong on that one. Both monitors have the same physical aspect ratio it's just that the HP has smaller pixels.

.258dp x1920 495.36=19.5023622w .258 x1200 =309.6=12.1889764t
.27dp x 1920 518.4 =20.4094488w .27 x1200=324=12.7559055t

so 12.18x19.50
vs 12.75x20.40

measure diagonaly

one is a 23 one is a 24...

one is smaller but sharper
the other is a littel bigger but not quite as fine...

end of story

thore

Thank you for the answer.

I figured this was a valid question because my cousin's 1280x1024 ViewSonic 17" panel is physically NOT a perfect 5:4 aspect ratio. My Samsung 172X is.
