I hate these things, they're happening constantly and really pissing me off.

but i'm really not sure what I can do about them, any tips guys?

sorry, i forgot to explain. It's going on in my internal 40 hd. It's rather old and im working on replacing it. But, I reformated and reloaded windows. Things seem to be going pretty smoothly now. *knocks on wood*:D

Windows is such a pain.

sounds like your HD is dying... i wouldn't put anything you care too much on there (that isn;t backed up elsewhere)...

get a new drive.

good luck.

like bjork said, it seem more a hard drive issue, don't go blaming windows. it is inevitable that all hard drives will eventually fail. it's just a matter of when. usually they last plenty long that we don't need to worry but not always.

There are three causes for this error I've run into over the years. In order of statistical likelihood:
1) Windows selecting an incorrect setting for the IDE controller and drive (PIO/UDMA mode, drive caching, etc.)
2) Flaky controller and/or bad drivers for controller
3) Flaky and/or drive heading to Florida
