Defender just offered an update again even though I have updates off

Someone here told me how to disable updates on Win8.1 using gpedit so I did that. Everything has been fine for two weeks then this morning Windows notified me of an update to Defender. WTF?

You don't want your AV to receive definition updates, or are you using something else?

Microsoft does say they may push out 'critical' updates, possibly that includes occasionally updating def files.

If you don't want to get updates just disable the Windows Update service.

I did disable the update service using GPedit. I get updates when I want to get them and don't want to be harassed by Microsoft. Back to using win-updates-disabler-portable.

I have "tools" to fix that.
