no more delays...Deathloop has gone Gold!...get ready to break the timeloop on September 14!

https://twitter.com/deathloop/status/1423297769524056064

I think I would have been happier for another 6 month delay given what we've all discussed in this thread on this last page. I guess it's going to be what it's going to be.

I slept on it and I'm still tiling 60/40 thanks to my fanboy bias but it's not enough to make me whip out the wallet. The gameplay itself looks solid. It's "everything else" after that where things get murkier than I would like them to be.

I'm going to be watching this thread, youtube, the outlets, and see how it all shakes out. Because it's Arkane I'm hoping for a better outcome and situation then the way this lays out at present.

Time won't make a difference in creative decisions, it's not that they didn't have time to implement a proper save and difficulty system. It's that they want to dictate how you play the game.

Exactly. I'm play through Chernobylite right now and it has some similar concepts and gameplay mechanics. It still has an autosave feature every 8 or so minutes.

I was already pretty meh on the game from the gameplay they've shown, but hearing about the save mechanics and everything else put it on a "never touch" shelf for me. I don't mind games being creative with their death and save mechanics and I enjoy a tiny handful of rogue-likes, but nothing about the system tied to this game seems remotely appealing. Prey and the Dishonored games were good, but no where near good enough to put Arkane on the "always buy" list. Their next game, Redfall, had a pretty abysmal reveal trailer as well and is pretty far off my radar.

When I first saw the redfall trailer I thought it was a trailer for deathloop, not another game. They seem to be making games on an assembly line now, maybe this is MS's new mandate. Then games will be just named 2021H2, and 2022H1 :D

Just so you know, a lot of the people who worked on the original Dishonored don't work at Arkane anymore, as far as I know. I don't think any of the original staff are there today. There was an internal power struggle back in 2016-2017 that even supposedly forced the founder of the company out.

Huh. If I knew that I had forgotten it.

I'm sorry to know this. That changes my calculus a bit. 50/50 firmly on the fence.

Deathloop PvP will be 'the ultimate test' for players

During today's online QuakeCon stream, the developers went deeper into the game's multiplayer component, a killer-v-killer competition between Colt and Juliana that we haven't really had a close look at yet...Deathloop's singleplayer story follows Colt Vahn, who's trying to escape a timeloop on the island of Blackreef, and Juliana Blake, a hard-ass killer who seems to really enjoy stopping him...but it also supports invasion-style multiplayer, as players can drop into games and take over as Juliana to really cause grief

Bakaba also emphasized that Deathloop's multiplayer is completely optional, and you can switch off the invasion functionality if you prefer to keep things completely solo...

final hands-on previews are out today!...reviewers got to play ~6 hours of the game...the game sounds like a winner if you're a fan of Arkane

Deathloop Hands-On: A Mystery Wrapped in a Shooter

Arkane’s next game is part immersive sim, part captivating mystery...it’s also a game where uncovering clues and following leads are as important as shooting...sometimes, you’ll actually want to die and start over...I’ve been able to play through the first few hours of Deathloop, and I’m only finally starting to understand just how well those two halves can fit together — but it’s been a lot of fun to figure it out

Complicating matters further is the fact that Deathloop’s days are divided into four time periods and four island districts...any time you move locations, time moves forward…and the districts are different depending on the time of day...for example, at one point I found the code for a safe, but I wasn’t actually able to use it safely until the morning, so I had to die and start the day all over again...it’s complicated, but the game does a good job of holding your hand just enough early on...I somehow never felt lost even though I had little idea of what was happening

So far the only major issue I’ve faced has to do with how Deathloop handles saves...

Deathloop is not at all what I expected

Deathloop's knotty enigma is one you should untangle yourself, because judging from the first five hours this really could be something special...for all the names that have been invoked when it comes to Deathloop - the Hitmans and Dark Souls and Returnals - it was a very different game that came to mind in so much of the moment to moment action...with its spy fiction underpinnings (by way of The Prisoner and Point Blank, of course), maps dense with multiple objectives and - most importantly - the sheer breeziness of it, it was GoldenEye that came to mind more often than other games when playing those first few hours of Deathloop

the guns feel good in Deathloop...really, really good...Cole's starter SMG spits and buckles, helped along on PS5 by some fine DualSense support, with a tendency to jam mid gunfight if you're still rocking one of the more basic models...the shotguns, meanwhile, boom with such screen-shaking exuberance that it seems frankly rude not to use them as and when you can...

The fame to me looks like the weird parts Bioshock while adding the constraints of the level design should be fun.

I know this is not specific to this game-

But I dislike when these "previews" sound really like regurgitated press releases. Just give me the bullet point list of things you want me to know, Arkane/Bethesda/ZeniMax!

Previews are scripted because they want to make sure all the gameplay elements are shown and there are no surprise issues. Still, you can see a lot of unforeseen issues pop up when done live, especially at an E3 event where the demo needed to be hastily put together.

Despite all of our concerns I sure hope this ends up being good.

It's going to keep coming back to this. This is a big one.

Deathloop's defining activity is not the elimination of eight boss-type characters, or breaking the time loop in which the protagonist is trapped...the game's core experience is about discovery — and not just plot points. It starts with discovering simply how to play the game

Deathloop is a unique game...it reminded me, all at once, of Fallout, Hitman, Returnal, the movie 'Memento' and the TV series 'Lost'...but when you pick up a Fallout title, for example, you mostly know what you're going to get and how to play...Deathloop, by contrast, asks you to play by its rules, which are fairly unique...and so, to explain how the game works is to spoil one of Deathloop's most enjoyable aspects: just learning its distinctive mechanics...

Deathloop will be available to play on PC via Steam, not Bethesda Launcher

Deathloop will reportedly be available to play on PC via Steam and not Bethesda's own Launcher client...though prior, and recent, Bethesda PC releases have been locked to the publisher's own proprietary software, a tweet from UK retailer Green Man Gaming confirmed that all new – and even existing – orders for Deathloop on PC would now be fulfilled on Steam...

Oh jolly, if I had to sum up what I most despise in games, it would be arbitrary rules that make zero sense.

you'll play it in a few years and end up liking it (like Dishonored 2)...

Except I liked the idea of Dishonored 2 from the start, I even pre-ordered it, that won't happen with this one.

Thing is usually my 6th sense about games is spot on. So I can tell pretty reliably when I'm going to hate or like a game. And now I'm tempted to get this just so I can tear it a new one.

shows that you've already made up your mind without even playing a second of the game and are just looking to form an opinion based on your pre-conceived notions of it...

Is this built on Id Tech (doom engine)? If so, how come the specs are so high compared to doom? Is it due to incompetence or due to different engine?

it's an in-house engine developed by Arkane Studios- the Void Engine...but it's based on the core of id Tech 6...the engine was first used in Dishonored 2 (2016)...according to the game's Art Director Sebastien Mitton about 70% of the original engine was rewritten to become the new Void Engine

the PC specs are pretty high but I think all games going forward will just list a 3080 as the Ultra spec even if it's not that demanding

The irony of this is so thick that it might bring down the building. I don't pass judgement on games before playing them.

yet you literally just said: "I'm tempted to get this just so I can tear it a new one"

so that means you've already made up your mind...I'm guessing you're going to try and deflect or change the subject or pretend it doesn't mean what it says...and before you deflect-- I based my Cyberpunk opinions on trustworthy sources who actually played the game...pre-release I was as hyped as everyone else

Different people have different metrics for judging a game, your way is no more correct than anyone else.

I tell just fine by a few gameplay videos if something is worth a deeper dive, don't need some journalist or news aggregator to tell me what to like.

This game is sitting firmly at a 6/10 on the interest scale, I'll check out more clips after release.

nothing wrong with not wanting to buy a game or not liking a game...not all games are for everyone...my point was he literally said: "I'm tempted to get this just so I can tear it a new one"

meaning he's going to buy it just to form an already pre-conceived opinion...so he'll look for the negatives and play that up because it fits his narrative of what he thought the game was going to be pre-release

Just because I'm expecting it to be bad doesn't mean I'll lie about it. Or are you going to say that the only way I can have legitimate views on a game is if I'm 100% optimistic about it? I'm expecting the worst, yeah, does that automatically disqualify me? LOL
It seems to me that it is you who decided this game will be amazing in advance and anyone who says otherwise is dishonest.
At least I'm going to play it before passing judgement on it either way. If I was reallly dishonest as you suggest then why would I even think of buying it?

Last game I played where player character death was needed to advance the plot was Planescape: Torment. You could save any time except combat and conversations.

I'll pass on this and play Dishonored 2 from my backlog, instead.

He's on my shortlist of go-to reviewers.

Nothing he's showing or saying surprises me.

Inconsistent AI but moments of awesome... some nominal bugs... you can play the game like Dishonored, Prey, etc.

"Wait for a sale" seems very fair and the "identity crisis and lack of focus" issue has been apparent for months.

He doesn't mention a "red flag/game-killing saving issue" anywhere in this. He doesn't mention saving at all unless I missed it somehow. This really comes very close to what my own expectations of this game have been.

The patches will happen. The sales I suspect will happen fast, too.

Looks closer to Dishonored than I expected...which is actually a good thing. I have to admit that it does look pretty last-gen, though.

I was looking forward to this game. After watching that gameplay in ACG's review, naaaaaaaaah. Game looks like trash.

Eh. We'll see. I am extremely suspicious that the game is reviewing highly, but as always, "game journalism" strikes again. It's too easy to compare it to Dishonored and Prey, and then claim "oh well those games are great" and phone in the rest of the review without remembering why those games were successful- and why they weren't.

It's being marketed for the more casual market, which I hope brings them (Arkane, who I hope escape the Bethesda/Zeni structure) success- having it locked on PS5 must suck for Microsoft though! Not everyone is going to pull off moves like clockner or StealthGamerBR that's for sure, so let's hope at least it satisfies the average console FPS player.

I might pick it up later this week if I hear it performs well enough on PC. It would not surprise me if there were some issues, LOL.
