DEAD WD Easystore 14TB $189.99

very good deal. I was trying to sell a 10tb one for $160 earlier this month.

I thought that ripping 4K movies was a popular use but even if you assume 100 GB/movie (which is high) that is 140 movies/disk and some people have 5 of these. 700+ movies is a lot!

This question is for you and anyone else that wants to answer. What are you using all that storage for, movies, TV shows, music, porn? Be specific.
Thanks

Plex - DVR movies & TV/archived (BR rips) movies/archived (BR rips) TV shows/music/photos

Games - I have all my Steam games ever always installed - this way if you feel the urge to play an old title, you don't have to install it first and then you're like eh nvm

Who's shucking these things and what's exactly inside (drive model)? I've heard white or red label wds but need more details.

I don't have 5 of these. I do have 5 of the 8TB ones. By the time I fill those up, I'll probably buy a few of whatever the new 14TB drive is...or maybe by then huge SSDs will be reasonable, but I doubt it.

Might pick up a few of these on Black Friday. Just sucks my paridy drive in my unraid is a 12tb so I’ll have to swap that around. That shit takes forever to rebuild. Have 42tb and still have 8 more slots to fill in my server. I have 800 blu-rays full quality and around 60 , 4ks full quality. Then I’m setup with Rclone to a cloud storage with 700tb in movies and tv shows lol. They all stream like they are local over my 1gig internet. Everything goes though Plex. I really want about 3-400tb of local storage. But it will have to wait till my other projects are done.

If I didn't have 4x 8TB waiting for my home server PC rebuild, I'd definitely go in for this. Just make sure to follow up on the minutia of what HDD models are set in these enclosures especially if youi're planning to "shuck" the drives for internal use in a PC or NAS.

I bought the Elements drive from Amazon. Even though it is pretty much the exact same drive as the EasyStore, it isn't the same drive, so they wouldn't price match. I think the EasyStore is a BB exclusive.

It is.

"Where can I buy WD easystore?
To start with, the WD Easystore range of hard drives are only available through Best Buy. Best Buy is a US firm trading in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. This means that the Easystore isn’t officially available outside of these countries, as the product is exclusive to Best Buy."
OK, I found this interesting, I got an email from Amazon today about this :

The on sale price is $290.53 but the on sale price at Best Buy is $259.99
Strange

With a 69% (nice) positive rating... so they bought cheap from Best Buy and are attempting to flip them on Amazon...

is it a lot? then you can't probably imagine about fill up all of these with 1080p HEVC :).. someone i know have 9x14, 4x6, 8x3 currently running.

FYI, this is live. Also noticed there are not 16TB and 18TB versions available (but not on sale).

Still mad that 20TB+ drives don't exist at this price. Magnetic media is expanding at a snails pace. Actually HD tech in general. There aren't affordable 4TB/8TB SSD's of any kind (whether NVME, SATA, or m.2 SATA - or any type - not even QVO); and like I said, magnetic media is super slow on getting bigger and/or faster.

Despite all that this is decent for what it is. Provided it's not a gimped shingle drive.

I ordered one! Should be arriving in a few days. Another 14TB should last me a couple months until this deal pops up again...

I'll shuck it and give the SMART results.

If you're going to need another that soon, you may want to buy 2. It did show up last spring, but no guarantees that it will. Personally i'm awash in 8TB drives, so until I fill those up, I'm good...and by then, there will probably be reasonably priced 20TB drives.

Finances are a fickle thing at the moment. Our state went back into full shutdown so my income was cut to less than half for the forseeable future.

If you sign up for Best Buy's email, I think they'll also send you a $10 bonus coupon - good until Dec 5th
/I just got one

The best you can get is roughly $100/TB for the Micron 8TB drives, not amazing but not awful either.

My ~20TB are slowly filling up, I think I'm at less than 2TB left, and I just added this 10TB drive about 5 months ago.

I just moved to a cinema camera and if I shoot in ProRes Raw it can eat a TB in 1 hour worth of recording. So to say I need a lot of HD space would be an understatement. In regular ProRes it’s about 5 hours a TB.

Haven't shucked it yet, so this is the speed over USB 3.0. Gonna transfer over all my data first through USB and gonna error check before voiding the warranty right off the bat. It's currently calculated at 12 hours to transfer 8.5TB of files, but I know that's gonna slow down once it moves off my cache.
I'll post an update in a few days.

So, after 3 hours of nonstop writing the external drive was getting kinda hot. Totally within acceptable ranges, but still too hot for my liking, especially knowing that I still have 10+ hours of writing to do...
So I just used one of my USB to fan connectors I had sitting around that i've found absolutely wonderful for cooling random electronics (like my modem and router.) and placed it ontop of the exclosure blowing into it.

I should mention that the drive is absolutely silent. I'm not hearing any head movement or anything at all from it, even with it outside the case and pretty close to me.

I say a big part of the problem is platter density is no longer improving. HAMR should change this but I am not sure if it will make consumer products any time soon. At work I am looking at increased storage prices for the same amount of space over arrays I purchased 5 or so years ago and this time no HGST.

Ripped Anime DVD's and Blurays and ripped movie blurays and some FLAC.

I've had mine installed for over a week and everything is flawless. This hard drive is so quiet that i literally can't hear it when its being used, kind of eerie, but I love it.
Now that its in my case the average temperature is about 30c, and considering I'm currently keeping the house at around 20c due to it being winter, that's pretty good.

Speed through SATA was about the same as speed through USB, but now that it's installed I have it all cache'd up so speeds are gonna show as something ridiculous. (Yeah, nearly 10GB per sec read speed. Thanks RAM!)

I shoot film on a cinema camera.
1 hour of ProRes Raw is 1 TB in Cinema 4k 23.98 FPS. If I shoot 6k 23.98 FPS it’s about 40 minutes. Cinema 4K 59.94 FPS is also around 50 minutes.
ProRes Regular (a minimally compressed lossy format and not LT and HQ) is about 5 hours for 1 TB for Cinema 4K downsampled 6k 23.98 FPS. And Cinema 4K 59.94 FPS is about 2.5 hours for 1 TB.

Shooting anything in RAW takes boat loads of data. Hollywood films are literally 100s of terabytes to film. Even ProRes regular or HQ shreds drives.

To say that I am going to need a personal server in short order is just an obvious truth. It’s more or less near the top of my list of things I need to buy. Hence my frustration that aren’t 20TB drives or higher in terms of density. Because even buying and building a 14 drive RAID 10 array out of theoretical 20TB drives would only net 140 TB of useable space which again would only be 140 hours of ProRes Raw not including any other data. And frankly that isn’t a lot of recording time.
