[dead-ish, now $579] 8 TB sn850x NVMe M.2 for $533 @ Amazon (or 2 for $985 on sandisk.com)

According to CCC it is a record low. Is there just not much selection of 8tb drives on the market?

Not much of a selection - Samsung has an 8TB SATA QVO that uses QLC, and there are a few rando Corsair, Team, Inland, etc. 8TB NVMes that have always been quite a bit more than the SN850X, which hit $550 in H2 2024. AFAIK the SN850X (and SN850P) are the only non-rebadged dubious quality TLC 8TB NVMe SSDs that are readily/widely available.
VERY tempting. I could upgrade my desktop and laptop storage and likely be set for 3-4 years on both...

I had a 10% coupon pop up when I looked directly at the SanDisk website. Just fyi for anyone looking

Most 8TB 2280 drives are old, and may not even be manufactured anymore, they also run 8 x 8Tb chips so they're really cramming 10 pounds of crap into a 5 pound sack. Where as the sn850x uses 4 x 16Tb, which yeah the double density chips most definitely are more expensive than 8Tb chips, but take up less physical space so might be able to get them done cheaper. Samsung's new line up, the 9100 series will supposedly have a 8TB model, but it'll be PCIe 5.0 so don't expect that to be cheap at all just out of the principle of newness.

That said if you're curious
https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/search/?formfactor=2&capacity=9 Most are older, so may not even be made anymore, WD is the new kid on the block at less than a year old for their 8TB guy, although Samsung's 9100 should be out "soon",

These prices are getting very tempting. I guess they are trying to clear out stock before WD Black Gen5 NVMEs are released?

That's a pretty sweet deal for WD's 8TB beast. I've got 2 of the 4TB version in my current PC. They're superb drives.

If anyone uses the Capital One shopping app, you can get 27% off if you go visit a product on the WD store and don't buy anything yet. Usually that day or the next you'll get an email with a 27% offer.

985 for 2, nice, shame I don't have the money ......

I think I had the browser extension, I thought it was garbage, might give it another chance.

I signed up for their emails and got a 10% off coupon. Left them in my cart overnight and they sent me a 15% off coupon so the pair of 8TB SSDs was $866. This should cover my storage needs for the next 3-4 years.

I was waiting to pounce until my 15% email arrived... Which it just did.

But now the 2-pack bundle is over. 😭

Still a great deal. I paid full price like 4 months ago.
8tb ones were stupid expensive though. considerably more than twice the 4TB version which makes little sense since they both use 16Tbit chips, so you would think twice as many chips twice the price at most. Unless the controller is radically different which I dont think it is
