Title pretty much sums it up - my BFG 8800GTS 512 up and died last night with no warning, after just under 3 years of service.

I'm assuming that since BFG liquidated back in September that they're no longer supporting warranties. I know PNY was offering some sort of deal to BFG customers, but it looks like that ended a few weeks ago.

Am I shit out of luck in terms of getting any customer support? My gaming's tapered off some since I built the rig, and the 8800 was certainly capable of running anything I've been playing lately, so I'd be perfectly happy with just having a comparable & functional GPU again. Barring some sort of miraculous recovery, what are some good bang-for-the-buck options as far as buying a new card? I'd like to keep it under $200, and if I could get something for ~$100, that would be preferable.

if you have time and you know the card is dead and want to attempt this go for it. you can bake your 8800gt back to life. since its dead its worth a shot alot of people have had major sucess

I'm actually in the process of cooling it right now after baking attempt #1 - hopefully things turn out! Anyways, I run at 1600x1200 at the moment, so not too demanding - thinking about possibly replacing the monitor though. Lately I've been playing Fallout: NV, Starcraft 2, Borderlands, Civ 5 & CS:S.

im still going to recommend the 4601gb. dont get the 768mb they are very memory limited. I just got my brother a 4601gb he will not get off New Vegas at all

You don't need a 460 if the 8800 GTS was satisfying your gaming needs. The 460 is way overkill. Buy the 8800 series replacement (and very slight upgrade) the GTS 250, which is a rebadged 9800 GTX+, itself a slightly updated 8800 series. You do not want a GTX 460.

Here's a decent sale on a GTS 250 by EVGA (80 AR)

I've seen them cheaper a couple times but it was 512mb versions both times. Don't expect a huge upgrade from the 8800, but it's based on the solid and still quite respectable tech of the 8800.

Edit: If you don't mind spending a little more you can get a significant upgrade though, the 460 768 will power all modern games up to 1680x1050 without any trouble.

Well, the card's back to normal after 8m at 375*F, so I'll probably hold off for now. I'll start keeping an eye out though for when I can no longer bring it back from the dead.
Thanks for the replies at any rate!

You can reguarly get a GTS 450 for 99 AR which is significantly better in every way. There is no reason to recommend a GTS 250 to anyone unless they are getting it used for $50.

I like the 460's, but the OP has an Intel 775 chipset that have major conflicts with the 460 due to DPC Latency spikes. They haven't resolved this in the 5 months since launch and until they do I consider it a non option for his chipset.

You can get a GTS 450 for $79.99 AR right now from Tigerdirect or Compusa actually. I see no reason whatsoever to recommend the GTS 250 series in light of that. Let G92 die already. That tech is over 4 years old now.

nice! ;)

If you're happy with the 8800's performance there really isn't any good reason to upgrade past the 450/5750 level. Both will get you about 2.5x the speed for under $100. Dropping back farther to the 440/5670 would be at most a 50% increase without saving that much money. Unless your budget is really tight I think both would be a fairly poor buy.

I don't think the 5670 is even an improvement over the 8800, there are a couple threads where people got them as RMA's from XFX when they sent in 8800GT's and they are benching lower.

Could be, I was wagging off of shader counts, problems like memory bottlenecks are much harder to handwave estimates for.
