It's easy to complain until I looked up my order history and this makes me cringe.

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AA1065

$164.99

Fall of 2007......what a gouge job.

No, I simply am astounded at what the cost of RAM was then for so little compared to today.

This is for anybody that says "damn, 2x4 DDR3 costs $80!"

Well it was much worse at one time.

This could be said for any computer parts but RAM was overpriced [hence the lawsuit].

Well that is true for pretty much everything tech related so not sure why you think ram stands out. DDR3 more than doubled in price and has not really come back down so that is the simple reason people complain about prices seeming high. I paid 65 bucks for 16gb of DDR3 1600mhz in Dec 2011 and that same ram is 170 bucks now.

RAM stands out because it was a monopoly that was busted unlike CPU's or HDD's.

Just happened to be going through my purchase archive, ran across it and found it astounding and posted it, that's all.

I am not dwelling on it, it's just posterity.

$65 for 16GB huh, yeah that was the apex of the pricing then. Be lucky to find a deal at twice that price nowadays

Hopefully it keeps going up and up! I have alot to sell, including 8 x 4gb sticks of Samsung low profile ram. :D

There is a price chart at one of the shops in my country that shows the price of all products from the date they first started selling them. Ram prices not just doubled but almost tripled in the course of 1.5 years.

So of course people complain. We are used to getting more for the same money later, and not much less. I just did a build for my father, and it's ridiculous that I paid more for the ram than the CPU, or the MB.

They're busting up Intel next

I am almost convinced that part of the reason the Samsung RAM clocks so well is because it does not have an XMP profile.

The problem with RAM with an XMP profile is that the BIOS generally locks the timings to whatever the XMP profile states.

With no XMP profile, the timings, including all sub timings, can auto adjust.

At least that has been my experience with it.

I remember paying $110 for a 4GB kit of Corsair XMS3 1600 back in 2010.

Wow what a ripoff. I paid $80 for a G Skill 8gb 1600mhz kit in July 2011 and then prices plummeted and a few months later I got a G Skill 16gb 1600mhz kit for just $65 plus it came with a free SD card. Then of course prices went back up a few months later.

Paid $43 for 2x4gb gskill 12/11. Sigh.

But did pay $92 for 2x512 in 2006 and $178 for 2x1gb.
2008 2x1gb was $43. Crazy stuff.

I bought my current RAM - 2x8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport LP DDR3-1600 1.35V for $99 last year. Wanted to get a second set a little while later and missed by 1 fucking day a sale for $80. The day after the sale ended was the day the prices shot up 50% overnight...regular price became $130-140, and now it's about double what the old sale price was...$160. All because of one plant having a small fire in an area that had nothing to do with production, then months later they all claim "no wait, it wasn't the fire. Umm, umm, we're increasing DDR4 production and cutting back on DDR3. Yeah, that's it!" Increasing DDR4 production...In 2013? Bullshit in a basket. Their regular business practices are slime and they jump at any and all chances for buddy-buddy price fixing schemes.

How I loved paying $250 for 40 GB of Samsung Wonder RAM... now that thing is practically non-existant as Samsung went greedy and stopped selling it, then selling the chips to other assemblers. Now all RAM is expensive as heck, and exactly when I need 16 GB more...

Ram purchases going back to 2004 along with CPUs that went with them (kind of interesting):

2004 - 1x512mb DDR 433 Mushkin - $105 from Newegg (along with a $79 Athlon XP-M 2400+ Barton)
2007 - 2x1gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 - $102 from Newegg (along with a $99 Athlon 64 X2 4800 Brisbane)
2008 - 2x2gb OCZ Fatal1ty DDR2 800 - $35.99 from Newegg (along with a $51 Athlon 64 X2 5000 Brisbane)
2009 - 4x2gb G.SKILL Trident DDR3 1600 - $189 from Newegg (along with a $92 Phenom II X2 545 Callisto)
2010 - 2x4gb G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1333 - $349 from Newegg (along with a $310 Phenom II X6 1090T)
2011 - 4x4gb Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333 - $64 from Newegg (along with a $89 A6-3500)
2012 - 4x4gb G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1600 - $80 from Newegg (along with a $220 FX-8350)
2014 - 2x4gb AMD R9 DDR3 2400 - $92 from AMD (along with a $180 A10-7850k from NewEgg)

Only really got killed back in 2010 - not really sure why I thought that was a good idea to pay such a premium on 4gb sticks.

2010 - 2x4gb G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1333 - $349

OUCH! I remember paying $25 for these kits back in 2012. I bought about 6 kits just to stay safe for future price increase.

I did the same, but didn't buy enough in 2012. Same thing happened with PC133 ram back in the day, you think I would have learned. DDR4 I'll buy a ton of when it hits that sweet spot.

ram is still cheap compared to when I had my Amiga, $160 for 4MB zip chips in 1992.
I had 20MB of memory on my Amiga 3000 in 1993 and no one believed me.

Best deal I've gotten this year:

Or 2x4GB for $41 AR.
It's CL11 though.

32gb for $106???
That's dope.
I thought my $150 for my 16gb of Dominators was good.

Y'all are paying too much. Black Friday at Fry's got me 24gb (6x4gb) for ~$25 AR. Granted, it was 1333 mhz CAS 9 1.65v memory... but I am running it at 1333 mhz CAS 8 1.425v :D

I noticed that today too....everything including the lower clocked modules jumped up after DDR4 released. So much to the point that DDR3 2k+ kits were about 5-10% difference in price from their equivalent DDR4 kits (albeit the DDR4 still have the slow timings).

Well, I remember back when I got one of the first computers that could use PC133/100.....and the first 1GB stick I bought cost me almost $100...... my how times have changed :D

Hopefully the price bubble will burst over the next 6-18 months as DDR4 floods the market.

I'm also worried about the rising price trend in 120-256GB capacity SSD's that's been going on for the past couple/few weeks on certain brands and models. Could be that they are trying to raise the price then make it seem like we're getting a deal when the BF/CM sales hit in a couple months...

I ended up adding a 16GB kit just because I was ordering a mouse at the same time. My mouse at the time cost nearly twice that of the memory.

Once DDR4 becomes the new standard, expect the prices to drop even further. If only I could go into the future, buy stuff, and come back.

Be a while till it becomes the "new standard". Took DDR3 quite a while to settle in when it first appeared on some high end socket 775 boards that took both DDR2 and DDR3 ram. And that was what? 1.8v DDR3 then Bloomfield and Nehalem appeared and the 1156 i5/i7 counter parts DDR3 dropped to 1.5-1.65v standard phasing out the older DDR3.
