"DCS: A-10C Warthog" is a PC simulation of the U.S. premier Close Air Support attack aircraft. This is the second aircraft in the DCS series, following DCS: Black Shark, and raises the bar even higher in the DCS series. You also have the option to play Warthog in "Game" mode for a casual game experience. Fly missions in the Caucuses region of the Black Sea against and with a wide array of air, land and sea forces with new and improved intelligence. Create your own missions and campaigns with the included Mission and Campaign Editors, and fly with and against friends online using the included online game browser.

Just thought I'd start a thread for DCS:- Warthog as news about it is beginning to trickle out.

SimHQ were at the E3 expo checking out Thrustmaster's new Warthog HOTAS, of course, how would you demo a ~$300-400 stick? that's right.........

Special SimHQ Preview Hands-on: DCS: A-10C Warthog.. Some nice features unveiled, such as an interactive JTAC/FAC.

Engadget were also at E3 checking out the HOTAS with DCS and LO:FC2

Any new game that lets me use my hotas setup is very interesting indeed! Now if they could also allow for a very customizable ui over 4+ monitors and maybe an iPad app for touch screen controls.... ok I'm just dreaming now.

Damn, so what's the learning curve for games like that?

It should be very scalable to suit your own tastes. For the arcade mode you can play with just a joypad (same as DCS:- Black Shark). For the Simulation mode, every switch and button of the real thing will be functional. You should be able to tailor the setting to anything in between also. So it is up to you as to how steep the learning curve is.

It is actaully based on the A-10C Desktop Simulator Trainer they made previously, to train USAF and Air National Guard Pilots on the new A-10C.

To get an Idea of the depth of the simulation, here are details for the already released DCS:- Black Shark (Ka-50 sim)

The A-10C is meant to be even more detailed.

The recently released Lock On:-FC2 / Lock On Platinum would be a lighter sim (but still uses the DCS gameworld).

I'm not sure about the UI, but DCS can handle as many different monitors as you can throw at it, you can also task different monitors to the cockpit screens if you like. Oh and have a look at Touchbuddy, it may be of some use to you?

Damn, this is the first time I seen a flight sim game attempt to simulate an aircraft with a replica of the actual control hardware:eek:

Its been years since I played the F/A-18 sim game F/A-18 Korean or something like that, set during the Korean war.

I might be interested in this.. if we can get away with just a keyboard and mouse :D
Thanks for sharing. Will be keeping an eye on this.

i dont think f18s were around during the korean war

I only found out about this game after watching the video for the Warthog HOTAS, i want it, bad! it looks great!

If the game has the same realism and switchology as DCS: Blackshark, every system, switch and aerodynamic quirk that the real A10 has will be available in game.

I cant wait for this!!! I used to love me some A-10 tank killer back in the day!

I like DCS Black Shark, I would LOVE this - time to get pedals and a nicer stick

Yeah, I had great memories of A-10 tank killer too. So much time spent on it.

Interesting, The A-10 is so awesome. Probably the most interesting plane to have a realistic non-arcadish simulator for. Is there any other plane that can go through so much variety of mission scenarios? Probably the only aircraft that gets rough, close and physical anymore.

New Vid showing the A-10C. Note that this Vid is from "The Battle Sim", which is DCS's military cousin. However, although TBS and DCS share much of the same code, there is no player controlled commander or FAC in DCS Warthog as far as I know.

Love that HOTAS...I really wish I had a new rig for flight simming...and the time to sim!

Really? They must have just thrown in that conflict without much thought :p
There were a few titles that looks like they are running on the same engine. Its like a bunch of mods based on Jane's F/A-18

This was the one I had though.
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/fa18korea/index.html

korean war ended in 53 f18 became operational in 1983 if we had f18s in korea it would have been over in like 2 months but the f86 saber did its job well enough

The second Producers Note Video is out, detailing the Start up procedure for the A-10C

Small note from the Devs about the Vid

ED said:
Please note that this note is based on Alpha code and far from complete. We feel it better to release such videos now based on pre-release code than wait until the game is about done.
This note takes place at a work-in-progress version of the new Nevada (Nellis AFB) terrain. We wanted to give you a little preview of this new terrain even though it is incomplete. No noise map yet and some issues with close range shadows.

& Some new screens.

Matt Wagner said:
Attached are four new DCS: A-10C Warthog screen shots that show off some of the Nevada range, new squadrons markings, and payload options. This is still very much WIP.

We are currently in the process of converting to DX11, so aspects of the game are not looking so great during this transition. After the conversion is done and the game is looking good again, I hope to create the next video note.

A real flight simulator that isn't just crappy airliner jets but military aircraft?! OMG it's the late 90s again!

Yes, this is a big approval.

I love FSX and all it's mods. But I agree, sometimes I just want to freaking shoot something. Seriously looking forward to this.

Today we have some work-in-progress screen shots of Nellis AFB from the Nevada map. Although still under development with a fair amount of work still to be done (object placement, lights, and texture debugging), it's at the point that you can get a feel for the base and level of detail.

Yes, that's also a new F-15C model for DCS.

Unlike most other aspects of DCS: A-10C, the Nevada map has been a joint project between the Eagle Dynamics team, luckybob9, and Zimster.

I've always been a big fan of the A10 Warthog. Every game - good or bad - that had the A10 in it I bought. This one is at the top of my flight simulator short list. Hell, it's the only one on my flight simulator short list. :p

Note the DX11 engine has not been implemented yet

Time for some Black Sea map screen shot love. Here are a few close ups of the detail applied to several existing and new airbases. As always these are WIP, DX9 and subject to change.

New Black Sea map airbases for A-10C include:

Mozdok
Tbilisi Lochini
Soganlug
Vaziani

Updated airbases:

Batumi
Senaki
Sukhumi

i <3 this thread, brings back fond memories especially of Janes USAF :)

any word on this progress? i tried scrounging around DCS's site to see if there was any testing/beta phase planned. getting anxious on this game the more and more screens that get released...

The release date is still 2010, and don't worry testing is very much under way.

Nate

i bet the plane was still flyable after some/all of those battle damage images. heard stories of those things missing an entire wing and the pilot landed safely. crazy stuff.

Question for players of DCS Black Shark - how is the game documentation / in-game training? I like sims (thinking of picking up a TrackIR 5 this week because I've always wanted one and I play lots of games that use it), but with something as complex as the DCS series, training/manuals are key to getting enjoyment out of it.. I don't want to have to rely on posting questions on forums for basic questions and what not.

Also, is it better to buy a retail copy vs. Steam? Does retail come with a printed manual?

One more thing - since I'd be spending a ton on the TrackIR setup, is DCS at least playable with a Saitek AV8R? (has twist rudder, two throttle axes, lots of buttons). I'd get something more suitable eventually but just the Saitek for now.

TIA!

You can download the Manual from the DCS website if you want to have a look.
http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?end_pos=2199&scr=products&lang=en

Also all the in game training missions are on youtube here
http://www.youtube.com/user/eagledcs#g/c/0CFA7EA40064EAE4

I found the Producers notes to be much better for learning to be honest, these are also on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/user/wagmatt#p/u/30/k_1rXqKJ6fg

An Extended (+500pg) Printed Manual can be has as a separate purchase --> http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?end_pos=1322&scr=shop&lang=en&cat_sid=2

The Saitek you have will be sufficient, for now. Once you're addicted you soon be shelling out for Pedals and a shiny new HOTAS. :)

As for Retail v Steam v Direct download from the Devs, it is really much of a muchness IMHO. Retail will probably be cheaper, where as getting it direct from the Devs website gives them all the money, instead of a retailer.
